The call of duty leads to interim coach for Clipper grapplers

TIFFIN– Military obligations led Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Head Varsity Wrestling Coach Kyle Forness to take a leave of absence this year, leading to the appointment of Jackson Litterer as Interim Head Coach for the 2017-18 season.
The Clippers went 8-12 overall last season with a 3-7 showing in the WaMaC Conference.
District qualifier Andrew Rohret is back in the line-up at 145 pounds as a junior. Senior Tanner Cochran (220 pounds) and sophomore Sam Stevens (106 pounds) round out the returning starters for the Creek Boys.

TIFFIN– Brandon Clubb’s first year at the helm of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys basketball program was rough. Several key student athletes graduated, and he was replacing longtime coach Steve Ottoson. For the superstitious, it was also his 13th year as a coach with a dozen years at North Tama (Traer), where he compiled a 165-137 record. He hit rough seas with the Clippers and a 2-20 record overall, 0-18 WaMaC record and 0-14 WaMaC West Division showing.

Trojans ready to defend state championship

IOWA CITY– The 2017-18 season for the defending Class 4A state champion Iowa City West High varsity boys basketball team has the potential to open with a milestone for head coach Steve Bergman.
Bergman, in his 28th season with the Trojans, has a 499-143 record coming into the new season. Bergman already has 500 career wins, with a 544-179 record overall, but is on the doorstep of 500 wins at West.

IOWA CITY– Relief and excitement mingled Wednesday, Nov. 8, as 10 Iowa City West High student athletes participated in a National Signing Day event in the West High cafeteria.
Athletic Director Craig Huegel recognized Logan Cook, Rachael Saunders, Michael Schilling, Kylie Heisdorffer, Braden Houston, Ruby Martin, Colby Greene, Maddie Laffey, Chandler Haight and Keimoney Lang.

Trojans shut out the Bulldogs

West High returns to Class 4A championship to face Dowling again

CEDAR FALLS– The Iowa City West High Trojans will meet the Maroons of West Des Moines Dowling Catholic Friday, Nov. 17, at 7:06 p.m. in the UNI-Dome for the 2017 Class 4A state football championship.
It’s a rematch, and the Maroons prevailed 23-10 in last year’s championship bout.
The Trojan defense held Bettendorf scoreless in a 23-0 semifinal win Friday, Nov. 10, in the UNI-Dome. The win was the second shutout of the season for West High and ended the Bulldogs’ season at 10-2.

North Liberty kids “Use the Force” to win Halloween Costume Contest

The City of North Liberty held its Halloween Costume Contest this year via Facebook. Results were determined by the photo that received the most Likes by 9 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2. The winners were notified via Facebook and awarded a $100 gift card to the North Liberty Recreation Center, to be used towards membership or program fees.

Local gymnast earn USA National Team honors

CORALVILLE– Nine-year-old Ly Bui of Swisher is one of six local gymnasts who earned spots on USA Gymnastics National Teams. All of the athletes train at Iowa Gym-Nest in Coralville and Iowa City. Four of the athletes are part of the Talent Opportunity Program, also known as TOPs, a program used to seek out talent at an early age and help guide the coaches through the USA Gymnastics athlete pipeline to become Hopes and elite gymnasts.

Support for incumbents drops

NORTH LIBERTY– Some newcomers will be taking their seats at the council table.
Voters in North Liberty, Oxford and Tiffin opted for some fresh faces after the Nov. 7 city elections.
An incumbent in each community was defeated, according to results posted by the Johnson County Auditor’s Office.
In North Liberty, incumbent Annie Pollock led at the polls with 78 percent of the votes in a three-way race for two seats. Challenger Jennifer Goings captured the second seat with 60 percent, a double-digit margin over two term incumbent Brian Wayson, third with 41 percent.
