2016 CCA baseball preview

Young Clippers ready to navigate WaMaC fields

TIFFIN– Brent Henry and the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity baseball team will have to do without six seniors who graduated with the Class of 2015 (Chase Rourke, Travis Bowman, Killian Walters, Tanner Bandy, Nile Rourke and Stephen Jensen).
Cappy’s (the un-official mascot of Clipper Baseball) Crew, led by these six men, posted a 21-19 record overall and 14-16 WaMaC conference showing last season.

Trojans relying on experience on the mound

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans embark on their continuing quest for a state baseball championship as they take to the diamond for the 2016 season. Under 23-year head coach Charlie Stumpff, the team has been the runner-up four times: 2009, 2010, 2014 and 2015 but has yet to win the title. Stumpff and company accrued a 34-12 record overall last season and went 20-6 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Jung is MVC Valley Division Athlete of the Year

IOWA CITY– West High’s Jiung Jung was named the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Valley Division’s 2016 boy’s tennis Athlete of the Year. The conference released its picks for All-Division tennis honors on Wednesday, May 18.
West Coach Mitch Gross earned Division Coach of the Year honors while the West High Trojans were named the division’s Team Champion with a 14-0 record.
Jung, a junior, put up a 14-0 match record, a 28-1 set record and a 168-32 game record and was a unanimous First Team pick.

Women of Troy fall to Lions in Regional Tennis Final

WATERLOO– The West High Women of Troy dropped a Class 2A Regional Final Tennis Match to the Linn-Mar Lions Saturday, May 21 at Byrnes Park in Waterloo. The Lions took the match 5-3 to advance to the first round of State Team Tournament competition on Monday, May 23 in Eldridge.
West defeated Cedar Falls 5-1 in a Semifinal Match earlier in the day to advance to the showdown with the Lions. Emma Koch, Abby Jans, Kaily Speer, Vivian Mitchell and Elise Chang posted wins in the singles match against Cedar Falls.
The Lions defeated West a few weeks ago 8-1 in Iowa City.

Boys pound Panthers, 7-0

TIFFIN– Tim Benson’s Creek Boys ended the regular varsity soccer season with their fifth-consecutive win as they pounded the Panthers of Monticello, 7-0, for a Senior Night win. The victory boosted the Clippers’ record to 12-4 while sinking the Panthers to 1-12. The Clippers also claimed the WaMaC West Division Championship, after falling to Center Point-Urbana early in the season, then sailing past the Stormin’ Pointers with the better record at the end.

Girls survive visit from Mustangs, 2-1

TIFFIN– The final home game of the 2016 regular high school soccer season was a night of celebration for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers.
First was a 2-1 win over the Mustangs of Mount Vernon, improving the Creek Girls’ record to 13-4 while dropping the Mustangs to 5-9.

Haight, Welch, Saunders shine for West, Tener tops for CCA

DES MOINES– The West High Women of Troy took fourth place in team points at the 2016 State Track and Field Co-ed Meet held Thursday through Saturday, May 19-21, at Drake University in Des Moines. Waukee took the Class 4A team title with 83 points, followed by Pleasant Valley (77) and Urbandale (60).

Dubuque Street Trail closure

NORTH LIBERTY– Weather permitting, a segment of the Dubuque Street Trail just west of North Liberty Road will close on Wednesday, May 25. The closure is necessary so crews can perform storm sewer work and then replace the trail segment. The trail is expected to reopen on Friday, May 26, ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.

City-wide garage sales June 9-12

NORTH LIBERTY– Local organizers have selected the weekend of June 10 for city-wide garage sales in North Liberty and have set up a website with information for sellers and buyers: northlibertygaragesales.com.
In addition to the website, garage-sale-goers will be able to pull up a mobile-friendly Google Map and find nearby sales by item categories.
“I always thought it was one of those things dying for an upgrade,” said organizer Lydia Fine. “I just wanted to make it easier for people to find what they need.”
