Women of Troy halfway to state with win over Lady Bulldogs

IC West cruises past Ottumwa 73-37 in 5A regional semifinal

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy moved to being one game from the 2017 Class 5A state tournament with a 73-37 pounding of the Lady Bulldogs from Ottumwa Saturday, Feb. 18, at West High in a regional semifinal game.
The Women of Troy held nothing back as they ran up a 23-7 lead in the first period with the first seven points coming from Rachel Saunders, who opened the game with a 3-point basket. Logan Cook made it 11-3 with a rebound and basket while Paige Beckner and Katie McGrane added three points at the free throw line in the quarter.

First round loss leads to consolation bracket woes

DES MOINES– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) only wrestler to qualify for the 2017 state individual tournament found rough sailing in the Wells Fargo Arena in downtown Des Moines. Quinn Murphy, a 138-pound senior, fell in 56 seconds in the first round, forcing him into the consolation brackets. Murphy won a 15-0 Technical Fall over CLGL’s Mitch Van Beek in the first round of consolation action, but lost a 9-8 decision in the second round to Tanner Abbas of CGD in the second round to end his tournament appearance.

Rios to represent West High at state bowling tourney

West boys second, girls third at regional tournament in Des Moines

CEDAR RAPIDS– Kalen Rios, a senior, represented Iowa City West High in the 2017 Class 3A State Bowling Tournament held Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines. Rios was the boys individual champion in a Class 3A Regional Tournament Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Lancer Lanes in Cedar Rapids and bowled a two-game total of 523.
The Trojan boys finished second at the regional behind team champion Cedar Rapids Prairie (3,141) with 3,115, topping rival City High (2,818) and Muscatine (2.729).

West High’s Nelson Brands shares Athlete of the Year honors

IOWA CITY– The Mississippi Valley high school athletic Conference (MVC) announced its 2016-17 Wrestling All-Division selections Monday, Feb. 13. Doug Streicher and his staff at Linn-Mar took Coach of the Year honors along with Matt Orton and his staff at Cedar Rapids Jefferson in the Mississippi Division, which Iowa City West High belongs to.
West High’s Nelson Brands, a junior, and Jefferson’s Matt Culver, a senior, share the Division’s Athlete of the Year honors.

CCA’s 53-40 win over Benton Community first postseason win in over a decade

TIFFIN– They extended their season and made history doing so.
Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity girls basketball team knocked off Benton Community, 53-40, Wednesday, Feb. 15, at home in a Class 4A regional quarterfinal game for the first postseason win in the program’s history in well over a decade.

West High’s Brands earns 2nd state wrestling championship

DES MOINES– Iowa City West High’s Nelson Brands took his second state wrestling title Saturday, Feb. 18, at the 2017 State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Brands defeated Johnston’s Elliot Pohlmeyer with a 28-13 technical fall in the first round and defeated Des Moines Lincoln’s Shawn Brown in the quarterfinals with a fall in 3:18. Brands took an 8-6 decision from Waverly-Shell Rock’s Austin Yant in the semifinals before earning an 11-9 decision over Cayd Lara of Fort Dodge in the 152-pound championship match.

NORTH LIBERTY– Registration for the North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball’s (NLYBS) 25th anniversary season is open. Sign up your child or children at www.eteamz.com/NLYBS by March 3.
Leagues are available for boys and girls age 4 through eighth grade. Call the NLYBS hotline at 319-248-1283 with questions or check the FAQ page on the NLYBS website. Scholarships are available.
New this year is First Grade Baseball, and Third Grade Rookie players will have the opportunity to pitch. Umpires will also be needed, but must be at least 14 years old. Training is provided.

South Slope rallies for Camp Courageous, encourages other companies to join

NORTH LIBERTY– Employees at South Slope Cooperative Communications, headquartered in North Liberty, are coming together to raise funds for Camp Courageous and now extending the challenge to other organizations in the Corridor.
The cause is personal for an employee of South Slope whose son has benefited greatly from his time spent at Camp Courageous. When news spread at South Slope about Camp Courageous’ fundraising needs, employees rallied to help.

Solar energy dashboard now online

NORTH LIBERTY– Last year, the city began seeking proposals to replace at least 60 percent– and ideally 80 percent or more– of the power needs for certain public facilities, and this past fall, began using solar power for the parks, streets and fire department facilities.
In less than four months, these three new arrays have powered the equivalent of 58,613.15 light bulbs for a day and saved 13,597.66 kg of carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of planting more than 750 trees.
