Fidget spinners for cancer awareness

SOLON– Four students from Solon Elementary School decided to make and sell fidget spinners to raise money for cancer awareness.
Cash Meade, Galvin Wisman, Allen Shima and Addy Wilmer were the four students among the group who made the fidget spinners. Wilmer donated the money she raised to an animal shelter.

Janice Heathman of Swisher, Kathy Osborn and Jan Mackey returned home on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 11, from a seven-day cruise to the Caribbean and Bahamas. They enjoyed time spent in Nassau, St. Thomas, San Juan and Grand Turks. In San Juan, they toured a 500-year-old cathedral.

Alzheimer’s program at St. Mary

SOLON– Solon High School students will present an Alzheimer’s awareness presentation at 11:30 a.m., after Mass on Sunday, March 18, at St. Mary Catholic Church. The event is hosted by Colin Horning and Carl Richey, along with his mother Angela Steinbrech, grandmother Narg Steinbrech, and grandfather Ed Steinbrech, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s five years ago. The presentation itself will provide a basic rundown of the different forms and stages of dementia, how to care for loved ones or friends, and how it affects not only the patient but those around them.

Shueyville United Methodist Men’s Pancake Supper April 6

SHUEYVILLE– The annual Shueyville UMC Men’s Pancake Supper will be Friday, April 6, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The church is located in Shueyville but the address is 1195 Steeple Lane NE in Swisher. Pancakes, scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausage links and ham will be provided as part of the all you can eat buffet. The money raised from the event will support local and international missions of the church. The cost of the meal is a free will offering to support mission. Enjoy the food and fellowship at the Shueyville United Methodist Church.

Facelift on North Iowa Street

Council considers concept for remodel across from City Hall

SOLON– “There’s a lot going on on Main Street right now,” City Administrator Cami Rasmussen said, introducing a concept plan to remodel 112 N. Iowa St., the third different downtown development on the agenda for city council members at a Feb. 7 meeting.
Al Wells, representing UpTown Main, LLC, proposed rehabilitating the building, a two-story structure directly east of City Hall, and reopening a ground level commercial space.

Council approves townhomes

HPR unveils 2nd downtown development

SOLON– Another new building is going up on Main Street.
At a Feb. 7 meeting, members of the Solon City Council approved a site plan for four townhouses to occupy the former Brosh Chapel parking lot.
The proposal was put forward by HPR Investments, the same group completing construction of a mixed-use, two-story structure west of Big Grove Brewery, known as 121 on Main.
Mark Pattison, representing HPR Investments, told council members the 1,500-square-foot units would feature slab patios in front and two-car garages in back list priced between $275,000 and $290,000.

SHS presents “Little Women”

Professor Bhaer (Noah Bishop), Mrs. Kirk (Megan Tucker) and Jo (Faye Duster) in a scene from the upcoming stage production of “Little Women,” based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott, by the Solon High School Drama Department. Performances are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 2, 3 and 4. Tickets are on sale online through MidwestTix. Visit MidwestTix at https://midwestix.securemytix.com/events/26063. Lions Club Soup Luncheon

SOLON– Come and enjoy soup, snacks and drinks with the Solon Centennial Lions Club on Saturday, March 3, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Lions’ Clubhouse, 301 S. Iowa St. Watch and cheer on the Fat Tire bicyclists as they race around Lake Macbride. The cost is $5 per plate with proceeds benefiting the Lions Club Community Betterment Fund.

Lake Macbride Fat Tire Classic

SOLON– The 22-mile Lake Macbride Fat Tire Classic will be held Saturday, March 3, as a fundraiser for the Solon Centennial Lions Club.
Presented by Sugar Bottom Bikes and The Solon Centennial Lions Club, the race takes participants around scenic Lake Macbride on twisty pea gravel, flowing single track, scenic beaches, blazing fast double track, hilly and steep snowmobile and hiking trails, before finishing off with some of the best gravel around. All proceeds from the race go to the Lions Club.

Hawkeye women continue to roll

Hawk Talk

For the third straight game, the Hawkeye women came out strong and finished off the Wisconsin Badgers, 88-61.
It was 23-13 at the end of the first quarter, 45-23 at half and Iowa never looked back.
“I was really happy,” said head coach Lisa Bluder. “We led this game for 39 minutes, it was tied for one minute. I told the team ‘you guys came out and dominated.’ When you dominate a Big Ten opponent at the end of the year that’s a really good thing.”
Balanced scoring and Megan Gustafson being Megan with 25 points in 26 minutes.
