Boys move up to fifth at Benton’s ‘Run through the woods’

ATKINS– The pack is running a little tighter as Solon’s boys near the halfway mark in the 2019 cross country season. Fourth early last week at Tipton, they followed with fifth place Saturday, Sept. 14, at the 10-team Benton Invitational.
Two Spartans cracked the top 20, with all seven varsity runners in the top 47. Sophomore Gabe Hinman grabbed medalist honors again, with a third-place individual finish, after a strong start over the wooded course through Atkins Nature Trail.

Lady Spartans fall to Mount Vernon

Girls rebound at Vinton quad, Linn-Mar tourney

SOLON– There was a chance in the first game, but it slipped away.
The Mount Vernon Mustangs, ranked first in Class 3A at the time, swept the Solon volleyball team at home Sept. 10.
The Mustangs dropped the Lady Spartans 25-23, 25-17, 25-14.
Solon kept pace with Mount Vernon in the first game, closing to within two points and a single point at 24-23 before the final Mustang kill put the Lady Spartans away.
Solon found itself in a 1-6 and then a 2-10 hole in game two, but clawed back within five before falling.

Solon blasts Marion, 44-0

Defense pitches shut out, holds Indians to 100 yards

MARION As the Spartans varsity football team traveled to Thomas Park in Marion on Friday, Sept. 13, the machine shed mantra south of Solon begged the players, Send em to the Spirit World.
Solons own version of the Young Guns did not disappoint, trampling the Indians, 44-0, in nearly a spiritual manner.
Solons scoring began early, during the first possession, with 9:51 remaining in the first quarter. Cam Miller sprinted up the middle behind solid blocking for 11 yards and a score. Cael ONeill kicked the extra point and Solon was up, 7-0.

Johnson County’s agricultural community voices opposition to proposed Unified Development Ordinance

IOWA CITY– Former Johnson County Supervisor Pat Harney didn’t mince his words when he described the sections of a proposed Unified Development Ordinances relating to agriculture.

Hoover Trail coming together

All but Ely Road underpass done this year

SOLON– It’s close.
Oh, so close.
The Hoover Trail link between Solon and Ely will be mostly filled in yet this year, with only the Ely Road underpass to construct in 2020.
A gravel, at-grade crossing is in place at the underpass site north of 140th Street providing access to the entire trail, according to Brad Friedhof, program manager for the Johnson County Conservation Board.
But there are still small stretches of concrete to pour between Polk Avenue and Ely Road along Highway 382 near Solon.

Creek Boys right the ship with week two win

CCA moves to 1-1 with 33-7 win over Fairfield

FAIRFIELD– The Clippers’ ship was listing in the wake of a 42-20 week one loss to Mount Pleasant, but the Creek Boys put the ship back on an even keel in week two with a 33-7 road win against Fairfield Friday, Sept. 6.

Liberty Lightning improves to 6-0

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity volleyball team stayed perfect in early season competition with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Iowa City West High Tuesday, Sept. 3. The Lightning, ranked ninth in Class 5A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) for two weeks straight, knocked off unranked West High 25-16, 25-11 and 25-13.

Liberty’s Keeney wins, Barkers lead the way for CCA

IOWA CITY– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and Liberty High’s cross country squads converged on the Kickers Soccer Park in Iowa City for Iowa City Regina’s annual Bob Brown Cross Country Classic meet Thursday, Sept. 5. The Liberty Lightning won three out of four team championships with the junior varsity (JV) girls and boys teams and varsity girls winning the day, while the varsity boys were runner-up to champion Tipton.

TIFFIN– It was far from quiet on the set as scenes for the movie “East of Middle West” were filmed at Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School Friday, Aug. 30, during the Clippers’ varsity football game against Mount Pleasant.

Re-enactor tells Iowa’s role in the War Between the States

NORTH LIBERTY– The Civil War, also known as, “The War Between the States,” and still to some as “The War of Northern Aggression” or “The War of the Rebellion” was waged between 1861 and 1865 with 750,000 dead. According to www.americancivilwar101.com, Iowa, a Union state, sent 76,242 men, which totaled nearly 3 percent of the Union Army, and made up just over 11 percent of the state’s population. Iowa sent four artillery batteries, 10 cavalry regiments, and 48 infantry regiments along with five Sailors/Marines. Over 13,000 Iowans died during the war.
