Making life sweet

SOLON– “As market goes, that’s about a premium,” Ron Puettman said as he inspected a frame of comb honey pulled fresh from a hive that currently resides on the North Liberty pumpkin farm of Dean and Katie Colony. “When the bees put honey into a comb and cap it off, it’s at its purest and most perfect form,” Puettmann noted.

Competition makes Creek XC Girls better

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls cross country team returns four starters to the line-up with senior Olivia Fairholm, juniors Kaylie Barker (All-Conference and 2016 state qualifier) and Ally Loren and sophomore Liv Smyka back to set the pace for the Clippers.
Coach Jane Astor, with 26 years at CCA, likes what she sees in her Creek Girls this season.
“We have a strong leader in Fairholm,” Astor said. “Barker trains well in the summer and will be ready to lead the team on the course.”

Liberty’s Lightning Bolts join Women of Troy to make a splash

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City West High Women of Troy swimmers will have their ranks bolstered this season by the Liberty High Lightning Bolts. With Liberty opening this month, many would-be West High freshmen and sophomores will instead go to Liberty. While the new school will field several athletic programs of it’s own in the 2017-18 school year, some programs, such as swimming, will be shared with West High.

A new chapter for Lightning volleyball

NORTH LIBERTY– The Lightning are back on the volleyball court. Last year, Whitney Lang led a dozen Iowa City West High freshmen as Liberty High’s first volleyball team. The freshmen were attending West while waiting for Liberty to be completed and will be sophomores in the new high school this fall. The Lightning were fourth in the CRANDIC League standings at the mid-point of the season against Cedar Rapids and Iowa City squads such as Prairie, Washington, West High, City High and Jefferson.

Lightning XC will flash alongside WaMaC and MVC varsity competition

Thinking big from the start

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High is a brand new school with new athletic programs, including boys cross country. However, newness does not translate into timidity or uncertainty, but rather a challenge for the first teams to make their mark.
Josh Hildebrand, head coach for Liberty’s boys cross country team, quickly pointed out his squad has absolutely no varsity experience, yet the Lightning will flash alongside WaMaC and MVC schools in varsity competition this season.
And, Hildebrand notes, they won’t just be out on the course marking time.

CCA XC continuing to make great strides

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– They’re continuing to make great strides in growing the boys cross country program at Clear Creek Amana, but coach Ben Robison wants more.
“We are carrying a larger roster this year, which is awesome, but we still don’t have the depth that I would like,” he said,

Trojans hope for Dome return

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s Trojans made school history last year with the first state football championship bid since 1999. Unfortunately for West, they faced the three-time defending champions from West Des Moines Dowling, who beat the Trojans 23-10 in the championship game at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Devontae Lane told Traevis Buchanan at the time, “Remember how this feels. You don’t want to feel this again next year.”
It’s next year.
