Free Thanksgiving dinner at South Slope Nov. 23

NORTH LIBERTY– For the sixth year in a row, a free Thanksgiving Dinner will be available to residents of North Liberty, thanks to local community members and several businesses. On Thanksgiving Day from noon until 4 p.m., a full Thanksgiving meal will be available for residents of North Liberty at the South Slope Community Center, in North Liberty.

NLFD responds to house fire in Penn Township

NORTH LIBERTY– On the evening of Sunday, Nov. 19 at 6:11 p.m., the North Liberty Fire Department was dispatched to 8 Brickwood Knoll NE for a house fire. North Liberty engine 112 arrived on scene and found an attached garage fully involved with fire extending into the residence. The fire was under control in about an hour and no other structures were involved.

State senators Kinney and Mathis talk jobs at North Liberty meeting

NORTH LIBERTY— The overarching theme of the evening was jobs. But a lively discussion among legislators and about a dozen constituents ranged widely, from the role of career preparation in K-12 education, to the need for a public transit system, to the challenges of getting broadband connectivity to rural and smaller communities, and even the potential of industrial hemp as a cash crop for Iowa.

Alumni Basketball Tournament, Dec. 30

SOLON– The Solon Basketball Alumni tournament will be held on Saturday, Dec. 30. Tip off is scheduled for 9 a.m. with games held at the high school and new middle school. The tournament is double elimination with a cost of $20 per participant.

SOLON– “We have had a great preseason. This group really wants to be coached and (is) willing to be all-in during the season in order to be successful!” Solon Head Coach Lisa Bishop said of this year’s varsity basketball team.
“They are working hard, having great effort and enthusiasm, and many of them are stepping up as leaders,” she said, citing returning players Brianna Smith, Gabby Marty, Erin Kerkhoff, Abby Smith, Saige Hauer, Jenna LeDage and Taylor Ryan.

Free Christmas Meal at Our Lord’s Church

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will serve a free Christmas meal Sunday, Dec. 25. All are welcome. Reservations are not required but would be helpful. The meal will be served at noon at the church, located at 131 N. Market St. in Solon. Rides and deliveries are also available. Council chuckles at UPS golf cart delivery

Shipper sought use of city property for holiday delivery

SOLON– When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a UPS worker at the wheel of a golf cart laden with holiday packages, pulling into my driveway.
It sounded strange, but they talked about it anyway at the Wednesday, Nov. 15, Solon City Council meeting.
The sixth and final item under New Business on the agenda was discussion and possible action on a temporary storage site requested by United Parcel Service’s (UPS) Cedar Rapids office.

Ely Road to open from Hwy. 382 to 140th

IOWA CITY– W6E (Ely Road NE) is expected to remain closed to through-traffic from Highway 382 to 140th Street until noon on Wednesday, Nov. 22, based on the latest forecast weather conditions and schedule update from the prime contractor, according to the Johnson County Secondary Roads Department. Through-traffic should continue to follow the marked detour from Hwy. 382 to Hwy. 1 to 140th Street and vice-versa.
