Lady Spartans drop third in a row

This week wasn't kind

SOLON– Another week, another three games on the hardwood for the Solon girls’ basketball team, but this week wasn’t as kind as the last.
The Lady Spartans started the week on the road Tuesday, Dec. 5, falling behind early against Central Clinton, in DeWitt, being outscored the first two quarters, 11-8 and 12-3, but rallied in the third quarter outscoring the Sabers, 14-5, setting up a sprint to the finish that found Solon only able to match Central Clinton’s performance, 7-7. The Lady Spartans fell, 35-32, in a close, low-scoring affair.

Iowa needs workers with skills in industrial arts

State senators Kinney and Mathis talk jobs at North Liberty meeting

NORTH LIBERTY— The overarching theme of the evening was jobs. But a lively discussion among legislators and about a dozen constituents ranged widely, from the role of career preparation in K-12 education, to the need for a public transit system, to the challenges of getting broadband connectivity to rural and smaller communities, and even the potential of industrial hemp as a cash crop for Iowa.

Saturday Soup Ministry Ends Dec. 16

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church sadly announced it will end Saturday Soup Ministry after the Dec. 16 soup delivery. For the past 13 years, the church delivered soup to those who requested it in the Solon and Ely area. Each delivered soup provided one person enough soup for two meals. Over those 13 years, the church provided 25,990 servings of soup. It has been Our Lord’s Church’s pleasure to have provided the service to the wonderful individuals they had the pleasure of meeting and serving.
Note: Our Lord’s Church continues to provide the free Thanksgiving and Christmas meals.

A hobby gone awry

Pyles making the Christmas season bright near Solon

LAKE MACBRIDE– It all started 40 years ago, and has exploded into a light and sound spectacle that just keeps growing and growing at the corner of Hwy. 382 and Newberry Drive west of Solon and near the entrance to Lake Macbride.
“It was when I had my first daughters, and Christmas was Christmas, and I just put up a few strings (of lights), and we’ve been at it ever since,” Dan Pyle said. Pyle and his wife Hope have gone from those first few strands to 142 separate runs of extension cords supplying electricity to at least 30,000 lights.

Gallery West decision “hopefully”

Council sets Dec. 13 work session for in-depth discussion

SOLON– The Solon City Council is expected to make a decision regarding Gallery Acres West’s request for water service at a Dec. 20 regular meeting.
Council members and Mayor Steve Stange discussed the issue briefly at a Dec. 6 meeting before setting a Dec. 13 work session for in-depth deliberation.
At the beginning of November, Stange asked council members to decide on the Gallery Acres West (GAW) extension by the end of December.
The topic appeared on the Dec. 6 agenda for discussion and possible action, but Stange quickly extinguished the hope of a decision.

Iowa wrestlers

Hawk Talk

For the second meet in a row, the Hawks lost the first three matches and trailed 12-0. But they came back to beat 16th-ranked Rutgers, 25-13, last Friday.
For the second week in a row, heavyweight Sam Stoll ended the match with a pin to give Iowa the win.
“We’re going to be in the funny farm if we have to keep digging ourselves out of holes,” said head coach Tom Brands. “We know we have good guys at every weight. It’s not even about winning. It’s about wrestling the entire match. Nothing in life works if you wrestle only part of it.”
