Girls a close third at soggy North Linn

By Joe Wilkinson

TROY MILLS– Each year, at the North Linn Cross Country Invitational, you can count on the weather… to do something different.
Past years have featured sub-freezing temperatures, swirling snow or high winds. This year, Mother Nature offered soaked turf and light rain for one of the biggest late-season runs in Eastern Iowa. Still, runners from two dozen schools had to run the same course, in the same conditions. This year, coaches just hoped for a team of mudders.

Five-set loss, five-set win

2 days after tough home loss, Solon rebounds

SOLON– The Lady Spartans slugged it out on Senior Night.
Solon’s varsity volleyball team hosted No. 13 (4A) Western Dubuque Tuesday, Oct. 3, in the final home match of the season, but couldn’t put the Bobcats away.
Despite a rollicking, see-saw battle, the Lady Spartans fell in five sets, 3-2.
“I was extremely happy with the effort,” Solon Head Volleyball Coach Sarah Ferin said. “We played some really great volleyball Tuesday night.”

Spartans pulverize Panthers

Solon moves to 7-0 with 33-0 shutout on the road at Mount Pleasant

MOUNT PLEASANT– As Solon’s varsity football team boarded their bus and traveled south to face the Mount Pleasant Panthers on Friday, Oct. 6, they likely passed the Highway 1 machine shed which encouraged them to “Pulverize the Panthers.”
Even Mother Nature could not deny the Spartans, with rains sweeping across the gray, overcast Southeast Iowa skies, delaying the game nearly an hour less than two minutes into the opening quarter.
The Spartans rolled over the Panthers, 33-0.

Drake dives into Korea

Summer abroad includes trip to the Demilitarized Zone

SOLON– Valerie Drake was lost in Seoul, South Korea.
She had flown from Cedar Rapids to Detroit to South Korea’s Incheon International Airport and taken the bus to Seoul, but despite researching in advance, she took the wrong turn and couldn’t find her hotel.
It was night, she was exhausted and she didn’t have international service on her cellular phone.
But she planned it that way.
Drake, a 2014 graduate of Solon High School, traveled to South Korea for a summer program at Ewha Womans University, in Seoul, to help complete her minor in Korean at the University of Iowa (UI).
