East-coast chef returns to his roots

Amos Dean’s catering offers produce, private dining in Solon

SOLON– Michael Lipcamon remembers strolling the rows of his grandparents’ garden at a young age. He’d pull peas from the vine, chew on rhubarb stalks and stain his hands with mulberries fresh off the tree.
“I spent a lot of time out here as a child,” he recounted. “I have a lot of baby pictures out in the garden with my grandma. She was a great cook.”

SOLON– Join the Bur Oak Land Trust on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Iowa City to remove invasive species from its Big Grove property.
Bur Oak, a collection of nine preserved natural areas in Iowa, needs 15 people to help remove honeysuckle, autumn olive and multi-flora rose at 3999 Starry Night Ln. NE in Solon. The volunteers will head to a local event partner for a free Surly beer after the clean-up.

Hawkeye Football

Hawk Talk

2017 schedule (Part 2)

Last week I talked about the Hawkeye football schedule for this fall.
I had the Hawks favored over Wyoming, Iowa State, North Texas State, Michigan State and Illinois.
I thought Penn State would be favored over Iowa at Kinnick.
This week I’ll try to come up with Iowa being favored in at least four more games so I can win my bet (a Heineken beer) with Mike Evans.
The Hawks finish the season with three home games: Minnesota, Ohio State and Purdue.

SCSD Hopping Iguanas compete in CBJ Battle of the Bands

NORTH LIBERTY– The Corridor Business Journal (CBJ) has unveiled the lineup for its second-annual Corporate Battle of the Bands, including an appearance by The Hopping Iguanas, which is comprised of Solon Community School District employees.
The event, which will showcase six company-sponsored bands, will be held from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 24 at Big Grove Brewery in Iowa City.

The green menace

Food For Thought

Many years ago, I enrolled in an art class to learn more about painting with watercolors. I’d majored in art in college and had concentrated more on oil painting, but had always wished I knew more about this more portable form of painting. The watercolor class was in the summer and most of the sessions were held outdoors. I became acutely aware of the many different shades and variations of green there are in our landscape and eventually became seriously tired of green paint.

A new type of neighborhood watch

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Police Department is building a neighborhood watch for the 21st Century and is asking for community help. The program is built on voluntary inclusion of a list of residents with exterior security cameras that can record video.
Participation is strictly voluntary and would only be used for crime prevention. Residents who would like to participate can complete a short form and send it to the NLPD’s records division at records@northlibertyiowa.org.
