Nock, Welch, Skopec, Dusterhoft, Haight bring home victories

CEDAR RAPIDS– The West High Women of Troy won the 2016 Draxton-Stiers/Wilkinson Co-Ed Invitational Meet held at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids Saturday, April 16.
West topped the seven-team field with 163 points, followed by Cedar Falls (113), Cedar Rapids Jefferson (88), Cedar Rapids Kennedy (66), Cedar Rapids Xavier (57), Cedar Rapids Prairie (51) and Dubuque Hempstead (50).

IOWA CITY– The West High varsity soccer teams hosted a doubleheader Thursday, April 14, as the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars visited the Trojans’ pitch.

Tiffin city wide yard sale weekend of May 7

TIFFIN– Tiffin’s City Wide Yard Sale will be held the weekend of May 7. In order to have your sale items registered with the City, submit sale registrations by April 15 to have the location and items on the City Map. Maps of yard sale locations will be available at City Hall, Casey’s and The Depot on April 29.

Iowa Teacher of the Year nominations due April 25 

DES MOINES– Thousands of talented Iowa educators lead and inspire their students, but only one is chosen annually as the state’s top teacher.
The deadline to nominate the 2017 Iowa Teacher of the Year is April 25. The award is an opportunity to recognize an exceptional Iowa teacher who is helping to redefine education. Nominations will be accepted from anyone, including students, parents, school administrators, colleagues, college faculty members and associations. Macbride Raptor Project Family Day May 7

SOLON– Macbride Raptor Project (MRP) monthly Family Day will be held on Saturday, March 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Family Day is free and open to the public. The Raptor’s Nest (MRP educational center) will be open with staff and volunteers available to answer questions about the project and the raptors. Snacks and crafts will also be provided for guests.

‘Good ol’ boy’ Rick Dvorak retires as Johnson County Planning Director

IOWA CITY– If you want to get in touch with Rick Dvorak come May, you’ll need to hit the campgrounds, shooting range or golf course– a few of the places he feels most at home, aside from his office at the Johnson County Department of Planning, Development and Sustainability.
“I’m going to miss working but I got to go,” said Dvorak. “I better get out and enjoy life a little bit.”
Dvorak, who will turn 67 in June, is retiring as planning director at the end of the month. The decision is a result of some health issues he experienced last year.
