Josie Durr unanimous All-WaMaC First Team pick

Three Lady Spartans earn All-Division honors

SOLON– Senior Josie Durr was a unanimous First Team selection on the 2017 WaMaC All-Conference Teams in the East Division.
Three varsity girls basketball players from Solon earned spots on the division’s honor list.
Joining Durr were junior Brianna Smith and sophomore Gabby Marty, both Honorable Mention selections.
Durr scored 17.3 points per game to lead the Lady Spartans in the 2016-17 season. She shot 36.9 percent from the field, 69.1 percent from the free throw line and had 36 assists. She also led the team defensively with 164 steals and 11 blocks.

Solon’s Sterling McIlravy wins Junior PGA honors, looks forward to 2017 golf season

SOLON– You could say 2016 was a “sterling” year for Sterling McIlravy.
The homeschooled student athlete, who competes with Solon High School in golf and basketball, was named the 2016 Iowa Junior PGA Player of the Year (Boys 16-18) this past summer.

Tina Kearns, of Shellsburg, Jennie Rambo, of Vinton, and Shirley and Chris Worley spent Thursday, Feb. 16, through Sunday, Feb. 19, visiting Melody Fawl in Olathe, Kansas. Melody is the sister-in-law of Shirley and the aunty of Tina, Jennie and Chris.

The Ely Town and Country Club met at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, for dinner and a meeting at Gwen’s Restaurant in Lisbon. Veron and Kay Erenberger were the hosts.

Fruit and vegetable producer meet-ups in Solon and Donnellson

SOLON– Two fruit and vegetable farmers in Eastern Iowa will host producer meet-ups to discuss the upcoming season, challenges and opportunities for fruit and vegetable growers, and to meet and network with other farmers over a cup of coffee. These meet-ups are free and open to all fruit and vegetable growers.

Spring break stay-cation? Come to the library to paint your own shirt

The next session of Krafty Kids, a free program for students in fifth grade and up, will be held Monday, March 13, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. This time, bring a white or light-colored T-shirt to decorate with fabric paint and printing materials. 4th Annual Brett Smith Memorial Run/Walk Saturday, April 22

SOLON– The Fourth Annual Brett Smith Memorial Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, April 22, in Solon.
Register at www.brettrunsolon.org.
The Brett Smith Memorial Run/Walk will feature both a 1-mile fun run, and a timed 5K race. Both will start and finish at Randall Park.
The cost for the 1-mile is $15; the cost for the 5K is $20; children 12 and under are $10. All proceeds from the race will be donated.
Interested runners/walkers do not need to be pre-registered in order to participate.

Solon Spotlight can drive March 25

SOLON– Solon Spotlight will collect cans and bottles on Saturday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to noon. Solon students and parents will collect throughout the community. Can donations can be also dropped off at the Solon High School band room that same morning. Donations will be used to support arts, drama, music and speech programs at the elementary, middle school and high school levels.

Shueyville United Methodist Men’s Pancake Supper March 31

SHUEYVILLE– The Shueyville United Methodist Men’s Pancake Supper is Friday, March 31, from 5-7 p.m.
Come enjoy good food and fellowship with friends.
The pancake supper is an all-you-can eat supper which includes pancakes, eggs, ham, sausage, hash browns and beverage. The supper is used to support mission activities, both at home and around the world.
The church mailing address is 1195 Steeple Ln. NE, in Swisher, but is located in Shueyville, just 3/4 mile east of Interstate 380 on Exit 10.
Cost for adults is $6, ages 3-12 is $3, and those under 3 are free.

Solon High School Community Service Day Monday, April 24

SOLON– Students at Solon High School will be doing community service projects throughout the community Monday, April 24, from 12-3 p.m.
Students are looking forward to giving back to the community that has given so much to our schools. This year, the high school would like to extend an invitation to elderly residents in the community. If you have an outdoor project, we would like to help. Also, if you are a business in Solon and need a few hands, we can do that too! Students will spend the afternoon throughout the city helping businesses and residents in need.

Area firefighters scramble to take testing again

AMES– Last June, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) announced the results of an investigation of the Fire Service Training Bureau (FSTB) in the State Fire Marshal Division of the Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The investigation involved the scoring and the certification processes for individuals who took training classes through the FSTB, such as Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, Fire Instructor and others.
