CCA alumnus shooting for RedTails

MARENGO, Ohio– Emily Klein, a graduate of Clear Creek Amana High School, competed in the 2017 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) College National Tournament at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio, Oct. 27-29, 2017, as a member of the Hawkeye Community College RedTails. A sophomore at Hawkeye, Klein placed 17th overall out of 31 female athletes with 497 birds total over the course of the three-day event.

Moore basket edges CCA past South Tama, 41-40

TAMA– Head Coach Brandon Clubb’s Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys basketball team rebounded from a 49-21 loss to Vinton-Shellsburg with a 41-40 upset win over the Trojans of South Tama Friday, Jan. 26, in Tama.
The Clippers led 15-6 at the end of the first period and held a slim 25-23 edge at halftime. The Trojans made it a close battle in the third, taking the quarter 32-33 before some last-minute dramatics by the Creek Boys.
“Darius Moore hits a shot to go up by one (point) with about a minute left,” Clubb said. “CCA defends the last possession by South Tama for the win.”

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys basketball team defeated the Vikings of Vinton-Shellsburg, 60-50, in Vinton, on Dec. 12. The Vikings returned the favor Tuesday, Jan. 23, in Tiffin, sinking the Clippers, 41-29, for their second win of the season.

Lightning grapplers struggle

DeWITT– Liberty High’s varsity wrestlers faced stiff competition Thursday, Jan. 25, on the road in DeWitt. The Lightning squared off against the Central Clinton Sabers and the Marion Indians and wound up on the wrong side of the final score in both duals.
Marion defeated Liberty, 61-15, with Jared Alger (132 pounds) taking a 4-1 decision from Marion’s Austin Fritz, while Ashton Barker (145) pinned the Indians’ Zach Cochran in 4:36 and Drew Snyder (152) pinned Marion’s Ben Gibson in 2:41.

King and Queen Pins split

West and City High bowlers split in rivalry match

IOWA CITY– The King and Queen Pin have split for one year. The pins, traveling trophies for the annual rivalry match between Iowa City West High and Iowa City, City High bowlers, went their separate ways Friday, Jan. 26, after the Trojans and Little Hawks met at Colonial Lanes. The West High girls kept the Queen Pin for the second year in a row, and ninth time since 2004-05 when the couple debuted, while the City High boys claimed the King Pin for the first time since 2010-11. The Trojan boys have also been keepers of the pin nine times since 2004-05.

Clipper wrestlers 12th at WaMaC meet

MAQUOKETA– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) sent eight men to the 2018 WaMaC Conference Wrestling Tournament Saturday, Jan. 27, at Maquoketa High School and ended up with the most points scored (68.5) and a 12th-place finish, the second-best ever for the Clippers at a WaMaC tourney.
Sam Stevens produced the Creek Boys’ best finish with a third-place showing at 113 pounds while Andrew Rohret and Tanner Cochran were fourth at 145 and 220 pounds, respectively.
West Delaware took the Team Championship with 214.5 points while Solon took the runner-up spot with 195.0.

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity girls and boys basketball teams both fell victim to the Trojans of Fairfield High School Friday, Jan. 26, at home in a varsity doubleheader.
The Liberty girls fell 67-46 to Fairfield, trailing throughout the contest. The Trojans led 12-10 at the end of the first period and were up a commanding 40-22 at halftime. Fairfield poured in 21 points in the third period to take a comfortable 61-33 lead into the final quarter.

Trojan wrestlers fourth at Super Meet

CEDAR RAPIDS– Iowa City West High’s varsity wrestlers finished the day fourth in team points at the 2018 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Super Meet Saturday, Jan. 27, at Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School.
Iowa City, City High took the team championship with 221 points, followed by Cedar Rapids Prairie with 203. Dubuque Hempstead was the third-place team followed by the West High Trojans with 162.5.
Nelson Brands won the conference championship at 160 pounds while Graham Gambrall won at 132.

Repeat loss for Women, historic win for boys

IOWA CITY– History repeated itself and history was made Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Iowa City West High School as the Women of Troy fell to their crosstown rival City High for the second time this season. The Little Hawks defeated the West High girls, 53-40, at City High on Dec. 12 and kept their record perfect, at 16-0, with a 79-70 win in the first half of a varsity doubleheader.

IHSAA announces new football districts and playoff process

IOWA CITY– A new football rivalry may be a byproduct of the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s (IHSAA) new districts for the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The IHSAA released the new alignments Thursday, Jan. 25, a day after announcing changes to the qualifying system for postseason playoff games.
