Luke Ira unanimous First Team WaMaC baseball pick

Miller, Linderbaum, Harris and Hofsommer 2nd team; Weetman and Bandy Honorable Mention WaMaC East All-Conference 2017

SOLON– WaMaC East All-Confence 2017 Baseball selections were announced and included six Solon Spartans.
Junior infielder Luke Ira captured First Team WaMaC East All-Conference, unanimous selection honors for his performance during the 2017 season. Ira batted .519, recording 54 hits, 11 doubles, three triples, four home runs, and 14 stolen bases during his 2017 season.

Antique presenters return Aug. 23 for Senior Conversations roadshow

SOLON– The Solon Public Library is hosting the first Antique Roadshowing Wednesday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. until noon for the August Senior Conversations. Dick Taber and Michelle Juehring, expert antique presenters who spoke at the June conversations’ event on various ways to pass on family valuables, will return to perform appraisals for a modest charge.
So much interest in the June event prompted this exciting follow-up. Fifteen-to 20-minute appointments may be made for either antique items or jewelry pieces by calling 624-2710.

Dan and Debbie’s Creamery celebrates one-year anniversary

ELY– Dan and Debbie’s Creamery, a small locally owned and operated farm-to-table dairy production facility and creamery store, celebrate their one-year anniversary this month. It’s been a year of firsts for the entire Takes family, of rural Ely, Iowa after taking a leap of faith one-year ago by expanding their 20-year old dairy operation to offer a complete line of farm-to-table dairy products.

Roundabout detour

Construction of 382/Ely Road intersection to begin Aug. 7

SOLON– Construction is set to begin on a roundabout at the intersection of Highway 382 and Ely Road, west of Solon.
According to Assistant Johnson County Engineer Ed Bartels, Peterson Contractors Inc. (PCI) will begin work on the project Monday, Aug. 7, with completion in mid-November. PCI’s winning bid of $982,202.55 was approved by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors at a July 13 meeting.
Regular users of Highway 382 can expect several months of construction traffic and a detour of Ely Road.

Community Corn Roast at Iowa Grown Market Sunday, Aug. 13

SOLON– Mark your calendar to join Iowa Grown Market for its second annual Community Corn Roast Sunday, Aug. 13, from 3-6 p.m. The gathering will feature live music, fresh-roasted corn and fun for the whole family. Bring a blanket or chair and your favorite beverage. Local band Notes from the Underground will perform and cover classics.
New this year is an open house of The Magic Barn. Here’s your opportunity to check out this one-of-a-kind recording studio and music space that houses equipment used by the big names and local legends.

Family Day at the Iowa Raptor Project Saturday, Aug. 5

SOLON– Join the Iowa Raptor Project for its monthly Family Day on Saturday, Aug. 5, form 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
August’s featured raptor is the Harris’s hawk. Learn about the bird and enjoy some arts and crafts and snacks. This event is free and open to the public.

Advocates to tour Villages of Van Buren County Thursday, Aug. 17

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates have scheduled a trip Thursday, Aug. 17, to tour the Villages of Van Buren County. The trip leaves from the Solon Recreation and Nature Area at 7 a.m., stops for the step-on guide to arrive at Morris Park. The tour begins with a view of an 1800 barn and a feast on homemade cinnamon rolls. Next a visit to Millard’s turtle farm, then on to Bentonsport Indian Artifact Museum and the National Historic District.

Solon Dance Team to host can and bottle drive Saturday, Aug. 5

SOLON– Are your cans and bottles piling up? Help the dance team raise funds.
The Solon Dance Team will hold a can drive Saturday, Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. until noon at the Solon High School parking lot. Dance team members will be removing pop tabs and donating them to the Ronald McDonald House. Contact Marjorie Lane at 624-3401, ext. 1116 to schedule pick up.
