Johnson County “EMS Saturday” event Feb. 11 at South Slope

NORTH LIBERTY– The Johnson County EMS Association’s (JCEMSA) EMS Saturday is an outstanding single-day event held in North Liberty, at the South Slope Community Center, 980 North Front St.
Registration and continental breakfast begin at 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 11. Registration is free for JCEMSA members and $60 for non-members, and includes lunch, continuing education registration, parking and conference materials.

Free babywearing meeting Feb. 4 at the library

NORTH LIBERTY– Join the Iowa City Babywearers for its monthly meeting on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 10-11 a.m. at the North Liberty Community Library, 520 W. Cherry St., in meeting rooms C & D.
Those interested are invited to bring their own baby carriers or try some out at the meeting. There will be a large selection of carriers available to try. The meetings are casual and attendees may arrive and leave at their convenience. If you are curious about babywearing but don’t have specific questions you are welcome to just hang out.

Troop 216 to host chili supper Feb. 4

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Boy Scout Troop 216 will host its 37th annual Chili Supper from 4:30-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the North Liberty Community Center.
Tickets are $5. Children 5 and under are admitted free. The dinner includes all-you-can-eat meat or vegetarian chili, bread, drinks and a variety of homemade desserts, including traditional Scout cobbler.
The dinner is the troop’s primary annual fundraising event. Proceeds help cover the cost of high adventure trips, summer camp and other activities for the troop’s 30 Scouts.

Family Day at Iowa Raptor Project Feb. 4

SOLON– The Iowa Raptor Project invites the public to another Family Day on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
February’s event features the Great Horned Owl, many of which are already nesting in the area.
Make your own owl baby out of cotton balls, pinecones, edible play dough and birdseed. Because they are edible for wildlife, kids can then put them out in the woods for the birds to munch on.
This free event takes place at 2095 Mehaffey Bridge Rd. NE, in Solon. The Iowa Raptor Project will have a fire going to help keep visitors warm.

City council seeks applicants for mayoral appointment

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council is seeking applicants to fill the city’s mayoral seat vacancy. An application is available to download off the city’s website, or at City Hall, 3 Quail Creek Cir. Applications are due to the city clerk by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in person at City Hall or electronically to tmulcahey@northlibertyiowa.org.
The city council plans to consider candidates for appointment at its regular meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the city council chambers, 1 Quail Creek Cir. Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend.

One step closer to North Liberty’s next mayor

City council set to make appointment Tuesday, Feb. 28

NORTH LIBERTY– The ball is finally rolling.
In a 3-2 vote, the North Liberty City Council decided to appoint a new mayor, rather than hold a special election.
At a regularly scheduled Jan. 24 meeting, members Terry Donahue, Brian Wayson and Chris Hoffman voted for appointment, while Annie Pollock and Brian Sayre favored a special election.
The decision came after former mayor Amy Nielsen assumed her role as state legislator earlier this month. Council members had a 60-day window following Nielsen’s Dec. 31 resignation date to come to a consensus.

Changes coming to WaMaC and MVC

WaMaC loses two schools; Liberty joins MVC

DES MOINES– Changes to the WaMaC and Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) in 2018 will likely lead to some new competitors for the Solon Spartans and the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers.
Liberty High School, under construction in North Liberty, has been accepted into the MVC starting with the 2018-19 academic year, making it a 15-team conference. Liberty will be an independent school for its first year (2017-2018) before joining the conference.

Close win, close losses for Lady Spartans

SOLON– The Lady Spartans had the lead heading into the fourth quarter of three games, but could hang on for just one victory.
Solon’s varsity girls took a 40-37 road win over Anamosa Jan. 24, but lost in overtime to Beckman Catholic at home Jan. 27 and fell in a shootout at Maquoketa by two points Monday, Jan. 30.
The Lady Spartans dropped to 6-12 on the season.
At Anamosa, Solon overcame a slow start.
