Farm commodity programs face cuts from U.S. legislators

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Food Pantry Executive Director Tina DuBois is concerned the pantry’s inventory could be pared down considerably, if federal legislators continue to trim agriculture-related appropriations spending.

OXFORD — There could be a major changing of the guard as four of seven seats of the Board of Directors for the Clear Creek Amana School District are up for election this September.
Board president Tim Hennes (Oxford), Betsy Momany (Amana) and Kathi Huebner (at-large) are seeking re-election. Kevin Kinney has decided not to run again.


City slides Peterson from contract to staff

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty now has an attorney on staff.
He’s a familiar face; Scott C. Peterson has served as North Liberty’s City Attorney since August 2006. Until now, Peterson has been a contractual employee. It is a common practice, particularly in smaller cities, to obtain certain services through contractual agreements, including those of an attorney, an engineer, and even law enforcement officers.
In North Liberty’s case, said City Administrator Ryan Heiar, it was a good idea, as well as a cost savings, to bring Peterson on as a regular staff person


Pantry to co-host public forum on hunger issues July 21

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Food and Clothing Pantry, in collaboration with HACAP (Hawkeye Area Community Action Program) Food Reservoir and other area food pantries, are hosting a public forum, “Focus on Hunger,” on July 21 from 12 to 2 p.m. at North Liberty First United Methodist Church, 85 N. Jones Blvd., North Liberty.
The public forum will include guest speakers and representatives of area agencies speaking on topics such as hunger in Iowa, the impact of commodities programs on hunger, and the difficulties of making up for lost commodities funding.


Iowa Donor Network to host blood drive July 6

NORTH LIBERTY– The Iowa Donor Network will host a blood drive on behalf of the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center Wednesday, July 6, from 12-3 p.m.
To donate, contact Nadine McNeal at 665-3787 x145. Donors must be at least 16 years old, in good health, and weigh at least 110 pounds. A Blood Donor card or other photo I.D. is required to donate; 16-year-old donors must present a signed parental consent form, available from the Blood Center or for download from www.bloodcenter.org. Controlled high blood pressure and diabetics are acceptable.


Floating Through History program at Sugar Bottom to be held Saturday, July 2

IOWA CITY– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Coralville Lake has received funding from Humanities Iowa, a private non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, to host a presentation called “Floating Through History” by Larry Stone at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 2, at the Sugar Bottom Campground Amphitheatre. A cultural resource for Iowans since 1971, Humanities Iowa offers many cultural and historical programs and grants to Iowa’s communities.


NL Pantry starts Thanksgiving in July food drive

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry will be conducting a Thanksgiving in July community-wide food drive.
The North Liberty Community Pantry has seen a 25 percent increase in visits this year.
Those who rely on emergency food assistance are often families with children, disabled, elderly and the working poor. Many families are one unexpected car repair or medical bill away from needing food assistance. Food and fuel costs continue to rise and community needs have increased.


Friday, July 8, is TiffinFest 2011

TIFFIN– TiffinFest 2011 will be held Friday, July 8, from 6 p.m.-12 a.m. and Saturday, July 9, from 7 a.m.-12 a.m. at Tiffin City Park. Admission is free, and parking will be available at the Tiffin Soccer Field and Clear Creek Amana Middle School. Shuttles will also be available. See the parade at 6 p.m. on Friday, then come to the park for Family Fun Night with amusement rides, food vendors, petting zoo, an outdoor movie (bring lawn chairs and blankets) and much more.


Creating new daycare opportunities for families

NORTH LIBERTY– The success of one thriving North Liberty preschool and daycare program has given rise to another.
Creation Kids will open its doors at a second location this August. The current program, first established in 2000 at the North Liberty First United Methodist Church, was carrying a waiting list of more than 80 children.
Creation Kids Director Michelle Eide said with younger siblings so readily filling up available slots at the Christian-based daycare, “There was no way to reach out to new families or the Coralville community.”

IOWA CITY — Jeff Kelley’s Women of Troy swept the varsity softball squad from Dubuque Senior High Thursday evening in a varsity doubleheader at home in cool, windy and damp conditions. West took the opener 8-4 and won the nightcap 10-0 in five innings to improve their overall standings to 18-6 overall, 12-5 in the MVC.
