Hawk Talk

Talk about multi-tasking.
Last Sunday afternoon I had two TVs going. One on the Iowa-Penn State women’s basketball game, the other on the NFL game with Baltimore and New England.
I also had the radio on the Iowa-Penn State wrestling match.
The Hawk wrestlers lost their second straight match, 22-12.
By the way, who schedules these wrestling and basketball games at almost the same time?
Penn State hosted the Iowa wrestlers at 1 p.m. in an ancient gym that only held 6,500 and then the Hawkeye women played at the Nittany Lions basketball arena at 2 p.m.

Hawkeye Men fall short against the boilermakers

When you go on the road in the Big Ten there are certain things you have to do to get a win.
1. You have to play defense;
2. Rebound;
3. Hit your free throws.
Those are also good things to do at home, but usually teams shoot better at their own baskets.
The Hawkeyes did one of the three– play defense– in the first half as they lost to Purdue 75-68 last week.
The Hawks held the Boilermakers to 31 points and 36% free throw shooting in the first half.

Hawkeye women Win

Iowa hosted Wisconsin last Thursday at Carver and besides getting a big victory, 69-57, it’s what I saw before the opening tip-off that got my attention.
Five Hawkeye players were dressed in street clothes standing under the basket as their teammates warmed up.
Hannah Draxton and Megan Considine had injuries that ended their Hawkeye careers.
Hannah’s chronic back injuries turned her into a undergrad coach for her senior year and Megan had a foot problem that also kept her from playing in her last season.
Megan was elected co-captain before she was hurt.

Yogic locals pack new parks and rec. program

SOLON– Many people think yoga is twisting one’s self into pretzel shapes and then trying to untwist back. Flexibility is important to long-term health, but for Ally Thompson and Sandy Kessler, yoga practice goes beyond stretching and twisting.
“Yoga is more than trying to be like Gumby, it’s an awareness of mind and body,” said Thompson, a yoga instructor who has studied around the globe.

Making futures bright

SOLON– For 19 years, Solon Dollars for Scholars has played a big part in many futures for Solon’s graduating seniors.
But many students don’t know of the organization’s financial support beyond high school graduation.
This fall, Solon Dollars for Scholars distributed $25,900 in Continuing Education Scholarships to former Solon students currently attending college.

Pantry organizers seeking storage for non-perishables

City not ready to commit

SOLON– The organizers of a proposed Solon-area food pantry would like to temporarily store non-perishables in the basement of the Solon Public Library.
The members of the Solon City Council did not leap to embrace the idea.
Citing concerns about possible infestation, burdens placed on library staff and the city’s lack of available storage space, the city deferred on a decision until a Feb. 1 meeting.
