Council not giving up on library site yet

SOLON– The options are still open.
Members of the Solon City Council are not ready to eliminate the library as a possible location for city hall.
Council members, city staff and Mayor Rick Jedlicka continued to discuss the potential purchase of the Brosh Chapel and Community Center last week during a regular meeting June 1, and will host a public forum at the Brosh site Wednesday, June 8, beginning at 7 p.m. to gather input from residents.


Not just child’s play

SOLON– Solon has grown, and now the city government is thinking it might be time to do the same thing.
Solon’s city council and mayor have recently been discussing a possible new city hall, but last week, their attention turned to the potential expansion of recreational programs.
During a regular session last Wednesday (June 1) a joint session was held between the city council and the Solon Parks and Recreation Commission to discuss future staffing and programs.


SpARTans exhibit opens at Shueyville gallery June 15

SOLON– Solon High School artists will be exhibiting over 30 pieces of artwork at the Shueyville Art Gallery this month.  The exhibit, entitled “SpARTans,” will run from June 15 through June 22.  There will be an opening reception on Wednesday, June 15, from 5-8 p.m.  Refreshments will be served.  Artwork on display will include photography, drawings, paintings and ceramics from students in grades 9 through 12. Select artwork will be available for purchase.


Lady Spartans fall at regional final

ELDRIDGE– The Lady Spartans soccer team fell short of a bid for the state tournament Monday night, June 6.
Solon was defeated by Center Point-Urbana 2-1 in overtime at the regional final in Eldridge.

Solon Optimist Club Bike Rodeo set for June 18

SOLON– The Solon Optimist Club will hold a Summer Bike Rodeo on Saturday, June 18, at Solon Middle School. Sign up is at 8:30 a.m., and the competition begins at 9 a.m. Each age bracket from “Training Wheels” to 10-11 years old will have boys and girls divisions and trophies for first through third places and two overall championship trophies. Riders are asked to bring helmets and practice bicycle skills for contests in balance, steering and a paper toss.


Calf Classic artists preparing

SOLON– The design “Blooming Beef,” submitted by mosaic artist Kelsi Fobian for the Solon Library Foundation’s Calf Classic project, was selected by Calf Classic sponsor Tom Cardella. Fobian’s concept has a calf covered in flowers, each small piece of hand-cut glass placed in such a way as to create a whole flower. The glass, purchased from Northern Lights Stained Glass in Iowa City, is cut with a hand glass cutter from sheets of glass and cut into smaller pieces with glass nippers. The design was first drawn on the calf’s body, with each piece of glass then glued into position.

To make way for all the prizes for the Summer Reading Program, the DVD collection has moved to the area by the copy machine for the summer. More new DVD titles will be listed next week for your summer enjoyment.

Keslie Humburg is our May winner for the adult reading prize. The Adult Reading Program prize is sponsored by Friends of the Library. Adult patrons 18 years and older are invited to enter the drawing. One entry is allowed for each book read during the month. Entry blanks are available at the circulation desk. During the summer, the Adult Reading Program is expanded to include a theme and a variety of prizes every month.
