All you can eat breakfast Sunday, May 6

The youth of St. Mary Catholic Church will be hosting an all-you-can-eat fundraising breakfast Sunday, May 6, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. at St. Mary Parish Hall. The teens will be serving pancakes, eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy to raise money to cover transportation to the annual Steubenville youth conference held at the end of July.  Cost is a free will donation.

Flag retirement

There will be a flag retirement ceremony sponsored by the Solon American Legion Post 460 Sunday, May 6, at 2 p.m. at the Solon Legion Park. The ceremony will be conducted by American Legion Color Guard, American Legion Auxiliary, American Legion riders, Sons of the American Legion, Boy Scout Troop 120, Venture Scouts, Solon Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. It will be an interesting program dedicated to retirement and disposal of unserviceable flags. Should you have a worn flag and wish to dispose of it properly, bring it with you. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the ceremony.

Retirement Village opens Memory Care wing

SOLON– The silver campus of Solon’s senior set is expanding. Solon Retirement Village has just opened 12 private rooms in a secure setting for residents with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Carly Lippert, social services director at Solon Nursing Care Center, said that the new space is designed for people who wander and pace and will feature a key-code entry and specially-trained staff in a 24-hour care unit.

District dropped from statewide Safe and Supportive Schools study

SOLON– Scoring 32 out of 36 puts Solon High School in a healthy, safe and optimal learning climate according to a report card from the state that analyzed student engagement, school environment and safety.
Solon was among 47 high schools randomly selected in 2011 to participate in the Safe and Supportive Schools Program, a potential four-year grant funded by federal education dollars and administered by the Iowa Department of Education.

May Storytime guest

On Tuesday, May 8, the Storytime guest will be Dr. Hickman from Solon Family Practice Clinic. Dr. Hickman will talk about what happens when we go to the doctor and try to make the visit less scary. On May 15, the theme will be the letter “P” and on May 22, the theme will be “Favorites.” There will be no Storytime on May 29.
Storytime meets at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays in the meeting room of the library for preschoolers ages two through five, their parents, caregivers and siblings.

Solon Retirement Village book club

Solon Public Library is working with the Solon Retirement Village by providing books for a book club for the residents. The book is read first and then followed by watching the movie of the same title. Several newer titles have been completed. The current selection is “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Anyone wishing to offer a suggestion may pass it along to Kris at 319-624-2678.

Redefining the young adult section

Jen Leveck, youth services librarian, has undertaken an ambitious project in the young adult section of the library. Currently the YA section houses books for fifth grade through high school. Ms. Leveck will be separating the section further to create a new teen section, which will label books for middle school (fifth grade) on up and the YA section will be designated for high school students and older. “This change will help students and parents select book content that is more age-appropriate for their middle schoolers,” added Leveck.
