Audit finds weaknesses in ICCSD business practices

By B. Adam Burke
North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Last year, Iowa City Community School (ICCSD) Superintendent Stephen Murley ordered an external audit to track down inefficiencies in the school system’s administrative departments.
Payroll, purchasing, accounts payable, budget, technology, human resources, food services and physical plant departments were scrutinized by a Wilmette, Ill. Company, Synesi Associates, who did an operations review for the district.
Their report calls for the district to install Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software.

North Liberty hunting for missing ordinance

By Lori Lindner
North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– It might surprise North Liberty residents to learn that a certain amount of hunting is legal within their own city limits.
Or it was, until the law was inadvertently taken off the books.
It caught city officials off guard to learn that an ordinance adopted in October 2003 allowing people to hunt geese and antlerless deer with bows and arrows inside the city limits had been removed from the city’s Code of Ordinances when the document was recodified in recent years.

Fine amnesty month at North Liberty Community Library

NORTH LIBERTY– January is fine amnesty month at the North Liberty Community Library. Fines on all overdue material returned in January will be forgiven. It does not matter how overdue the material is, even years overdue. The library would just appreciate getting their material back.
Existing fines on materials already returned will not be forgiven but may be paid in cash, in food for fines, worked off or paid through arranged reading times.
Call 319-626-5701 and talk to a staff member with any questions.

Perfect record, but still a ways to go, says Bergman

IOWA CITY — The West High Trojans improved to a perfect 12-0 record overall Friday night, Jan. 13 with a 66-42 win over cross-town rival City High. But coach Steve Bergman says his crew still has room to improve.
“We’re halfway through (the season) and we still have a ways to go. We may be young, but we’re experienced.” However, the coach said “that doesn’t mean we don’t have a lot to work on yet, but we are getting there.”

Lucky 13s as Women of Troy reign over City

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY — The West High Women of Troy improved to 13-0, on Friday the 13th.
If B.J. Mayer’s crew was superstitious, they didn’t show it as they faced cross-town rival City High at home in front of a capacity crowd.
West edged ahead to a 17-14 lead after the first period. Ally Disterhoft put up ten of those points including a three-pointer and a free throw which had to spin around the rim several times before dropping through the net.

A simple place to shoot the breeze

SWISHER— He did it, but he’s not really sure why.
Rob Pudil and his wife Gena recently purchased Melsha’s Tap from Loraine Melsha and renamed it Shooters on Second.
“I honestly don’t know why we did it,” Rob said. As the owner of Affordable Soft Water, he’s no stranger to running a business. He also worked in a bar back in the 1980s. “The opportunity came up (to buy the bar) but there was no rhyme or reason to it.” Rob said he shot Melsha an offer, and a month later Melsha asked Gena if he was serious.

Public and private land trusts gaining ground

JOHNSON COUNTY– Despite rising land costs and a down economy, figures released in November 2011 show that now more than ever, people are making financial and individual commitments to preserve the nation’s natural areas for recreational use and habitat protection and to safeguard water supplies.
Data in the 2010 National Land Trust Census Report show that the total acres of land conserved by local, state and national land trusts grew by about 23 million acres in the last 10 years. Iowa showed a 22 percent increase in protected land since 2005.
