Trojans reign in rivalry clash

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Take hot, humid weather, add in a long-standing rivalry, and you have the ingredients for two nights of dramatic high school baseball.
Charlie Stumpff’s West High Trojans survived the heat and rival City High in a two-night battle for citywide bragging rights.

Women of Troy one step closer to Fort Dodge, state

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– A lesser pitcher may have crumbled, a lesser team may have folded. For Jeff Kelley’s West High Women of Troy, Saturday night’s Class 5A regional semifinal against the Lady Mustangs of Dubuque Hempstead may have been just a little bump on the road to the state tournament in Fort Dodge.
An excessive heat warning expired as the game began, yet conditions were still stifling for the 4-1 West win.

Solon sinks CCA 13-3, 7-0

TIFFIN– The impending threat of a severe thunderstorm packing dangerously high winds postponed Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) double-dip with Solon on Friday, June 29. Instead, the teams met for a lunchtime battle on Tuesday, July 3.

Senior night sweep for West v. Cedar Falls, 7-2, 11-3

IOWA CITY– West High paid tribute to 10 seniors Friday night and in return were treated to 18 Trojan runs and a pair of wins in a varsity doubleheader.
Tom Harder, Andy Jones, Jacob Schmitt, Jay Slocum, Andy Topping, Nick Grimsman, Kellen Yoder, Ryan Aller, Luke Crimmins and Ryan Siems were honored between the games against the visiting Tigers of Cedar Falls.

Food For Thought

In the “Oxford History of the American People,” Samuel Eliot Morison observed, in 1965, that, “If the American Revolution had produced nothing but the Declaration of Independence, it would have been worthwhile.”
One can barely imagine what our country would be like had that one document never been created. Not only did it define our need for freedom from the British Empire, it provided the impetus to withstand all other attempts to take over and force our submission to the rule of others. Without it, our nation would not have evolved into its present shape and substance.

Walkin'

“Thin nylon BB on LHS on C 3rd D,” the note in my handwriting said, “tshirt/m-drawer/sleeveless.”
I scribbled it a few weeks earlier while talking with Sabra on the telephone. She called from work because she forgot to take a change of clothes with her for our volleyball game at J&A Tap in North Liberty.
