City offers curbside collection of flood-damaged property

NORTH LIBERTY– Following last week’s torrential rains, the City of North Liberty will collect flood-damaged property curbside for its residents all week April 22 through 26. Residents need only place flood-damaged items at their curb.
Other items will not be collected at the curb, but can be brought to the public works facility on South Front Street from 7 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 27. Items that can be discarded at the facility are furniture and other bulky items, appliances, tires and auto batteries, metal and car parts, and electronics.

Investigation into fatal shooting clears NLPD officers

Report concludes police had “no lesser course of action available”

NORTH LIBERTY– Three North Liberty police officers placed on administrative leave after a fatal shooting on March 10, 2013, have been cleared through an investigation of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
Johnson County Attorney Janet Lyness issued a press release last Friday with the findings of the investigation. It stated the officers acted with reasonable force in returning fire after being shot, and that they had no lesser course of action available to them at the time.

Petition pushes for district representation at county level

JOHNSON COUNTY– Petitioners pushing for a new way to elect county supervisors are getting closer to their goal.
According to Debra Thornton, chair of the Johnson County Republicans, members of the Committee for Fair Representation– the group that organized the petition drive– are “well on their way” to gathering the 7,619 valid signatures required to call for a public vote on the matter.

Plans for Mehaffey Bridge reconstruction laid out for public

NORTH LIBERTY– Johnson County Engineer Greg Parker has made a promise.
“Once we’re done, you’ll love it.”
Parker issued the vow Monday, April 15, at a public meeting held at South Slope Communications in North Liberty regarding the replacement of the aging Mehaffey Bridge. A packed crowd sat through a brief presentation, then directed over 20 questions at Parker, assistant engineer Ed Bartels and representatives of VJ Engineering and Iowa Bridge and Culvert about the nearly $9 million project.

North Liberty’s got talent

Dallas Cooling

Dallas Myron Cooling, 71, died Thursday, April 18, 2013, at his home. A Celebration of Dallas’s life was held on April 22 at the Solon American Legion. Private family burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Solon.
Dallas was born Nov. 7, 1941 in, Clemons, to Eldon and Julia (Borton) Cooling. He married Mary Carolyn Koss on June 20, 1959.

Keith Forbes

Keith Forbes, 97, of Iowa City, passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at Pioneer Park in Lone Tree. Funeral services for Keith were held April 20 at the Lone Tree American Legion. Burial was in the Lone Tree Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in memory of Keith. Online condolences for the Forbes family may be sent to www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Larry Hefflefinger

Larry Dale Hefflefinger, 64, Solon, passed away peacefully in his home Tuesday, April 16, 2013. A funeral for immediate family was held April 20, with burial at Anderson Cemetery in Swisher.
Larry was born Dec. 6, 1948, in Cedar Rapids. He married his wife, Rita, in 1969 and they had two children, Alex (Tracy) Hefflefinger and Sara (Matt) Hoskins. He retired from B.G. Brecke Inc. after 32 years of employment.

Building to standards

Several new power saws, four months and a pile of wood later; I finished the cat exercise wheel this week and delivered it to Cat Lady. Her felines were less than impressed and didn’t have a clue on how to use it. This didn’t deter Cat Lady, however, as she got down on the floor and put one knee on the wheel to demonstrate.
“See kitties, this is how you do it,” she said, breaking the wheel in half.
