Ryan Bys and Robert Jones win for IC West against Waterloo East

WATERLOO– Trojan battled Trojan at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo on Friday, Jan. 15, as Iowa City West High’s bowling squads traveled north to take on Waterloo East.
West High’s varsity and junior varsity (JV) boys beat the Trojans from East 2,827 to 2,038 and 2,341 to 1,771, respectively, with West’s Ryan Bys winning the varsity match with 469 and Robert Jones bowling 405 to win the JV match. West’s JV girls also won, tipping the East High Trojans 1,609 to 1,284 with Kaylen Brackett bowling 234.

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys’ basketball team extended its winning streak to seven, to sit comfortably atop the WaMaC West standings at 8-1 in the conference and 8-2 overall, after wiping out the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings, 78-46, on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at home.

NORTH LIBERTY– The Liberty High varsity girls basketball team watched a 31-16 halftime lead evaporate but maintained a fingertip grasp to earn its first victory of the 2020-2021 season on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at home, against Western Dubuque. The Bolts pulled out a 50-49 win to improve to 1-4 overall, 1-2 in the Mississippi Valley Conference’s Mississippi Division. The Bobcats dipped to 2-10 and 1-4.

Rep. Nielsen: COVID-19 relief focus of 2021 legislative session

DES MOINES– The 2021 Iowa Legislative Session started Jan. 11 at the State Capitol and State Representative Amy Nielsen of North Liberty said her top priority is providing relief to Iowans due to COVID-19.

Kinney to work helping rebuild Iowa, boost Iowa education and expand quality of life in rural Iowa

DES MOINES– State Senator Kevin Kinney of Oxford is looking forward to a productive next two years as a member of the Iowa State Senate.
“Iowa has had a rough time during the pandemic,” said Kinney. “We need to learn from that and focus on moving Iowa forward. A good start would be fully supporting Iowa’s mental health system, improving water quality across the state, and expanding job training opportunities.”
Kinney represents all of Keokuk County, almost all of Washington County and the southwestern half of Johnson County in the Iowa Senate.

NORTH LIBERTY– Talk about whether to build a new city hall in North Liberty or extensively renovate the current facility turned into action late last month.
North Liberty City Council members approved moving forward with design work for a new building during their Dec. 22 regular meeting.

Board takes peek at 2022-2023 school calendar

SOLON– Solon’s school board went back to the future.
Board members were presented with a draft of the school calendar for 2022-2023 during a Dec. 17 meeting.
According to Solon Community School District (SCSD) Superintendent Davis Eidahl, the calendar was prepared based on previous years by administrative assistant and board secretary Kris Wentzien.
Eidahl reviewed the draft to ensure 180 school days and a minimum 1,080 hours of student contact.
The first day of school would be Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2022, and the last day for students would be Thursday, May 25, 2023.

Johnson County Board of Supervisors appoints Heiden as chairperson

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Board of Supervisors addressed a number of organizational issues for 2021 in its first formal meeting of the year, Monday, Jan. 4. The board began by appointing Pat Heiden as chairperson for 2021. Royceann Porter was appointed vice chairperson.

Iowa frontline workers on COVID's severity: 'We've never seen anything like this'

NORTH LIBERTY– Elaine Hernandez and her husband were in a store when someone started to make fun of her for wearing a mask.
“Anyway, I mentioned COVID and he started screaming at me,” Hernandez, a nurse serving as a navigator/care coordinator clinician at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics’ post-Intensive Care Unit COVID unit, said as she recalled the incident. “He said, ‘Fake news, it’s a hoax.’ You know, he was like, he was very adamant about it. And, I was just crushed. I mean, I was shaking down to my knees.”
