NL Community Fund seeks grant applications

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Fund (NLCF), an affiliate of the Community Fund of Johnson County, is growing its endowment fund to support the community’s needs. Up to five percent of the endowment fund balance can be made available each year for those projects and programs.
This year, the NLCF is able to make $1,100 available for local projects or programs. Funds from the Community Fund of Johnson County are available for larger projects. Applications must be filed online by July 8 by using the application form on the Community Fund of Johnson County website.

North Liberty council withholds funding for passenger rail study

THE ISSUE
A passenger rail study by the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway (CRANDIC) in 2006 deemed service between Iowa City and the Eastern Iowa Airport too costly. Ten years later, CRANDIC is hoping to revisit the study and determine whether population growth and transportation needs could fuel passenger rail service in the Eastern Iowa Corridor.

Reaping what they don’t sow

West Branch farmers consign local produce at roadside market

NEWPORT– It’s not your average farmers market, but it’s not your average farm, either.
The Iowa Grown Market, located off Newport Road, south of Solon, is in its third year selling organically-grown produce from a family farm near West Branch– in addition to products from a host of other farms, backyards and kitchens within a 20-mile radius through consignment.

42 runs scored in doubleheader split

SOLON– Solon and Central DeWitt took turns slugging the baseball around the park June 20 in Solon.
The two teams scored a total of 42 runs in a doubleheader split, with the Sabers taking game one, 19-4, and the Spartans taking the nightcap, 17-2.
The win moved Solon to a game under .500, to 9-10 for the season.
It was the second home split in a row for the Spartans, which dropped five in a row to some powerful teams before taking one of two against South Tama June 16.

Solon sweeps Central DeWitt

Solon softball squad defeats No. 3 Iowa City West at Ft. Dodge tournament

SOLON– Head softball coach Jim White knew the Central DeWitt Sabers could hit the ball.
The team had hit Solon pitchers well before, and had been kept scoreless in only one game so far in the season.
“We’re not going to be shutting them out,” White said prior to a scheduled doubleheader Monday, June 20.
And he was correct.
But the Solon Lady Spartans, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, are no slouches when it comes to reaching the bases, either.

Three Johnson County veterans added to Vets Trail

CORALVILLE– Three Johnson County veterans– Robert Hatcher, Rodney Walls and Gary Sopher– were recognized for their service by having their names added to the Veterans Trail at the Coralville Lake during the 2016 Dedication Ceremony held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30. The three men joined the ranks of 185 other veterans, which have been added over the past 27 years.

Macbride makes Top Ten list

Lake Macbride State Park named to Take Me Fishing™ 2016 Top 100 Family Friendly Places to Boat and Fish

SOLON– Lake Macbride State Park, west of Solon, has been recognized among the 2016 Top 100 Family Friendly Places to Boat and Fish in the U.S., according to Take Me Fishing™, whose Top 100 list was released recently.
“I’m not surprised by this recognition,” said Nick Rocca, Lake Macbride State Park ranger. Rocca has talked to many park users and campers that come from near and far to fish Macbride. “They always have good things to say about coming to Macbride to fish.”

Ely Firefighter’s Breakfast July 4

ELY– The Annual Ely Volunteer Fire Department Firefighter’s Breakfast is Monday, July 4. Proceeds from this yearly event support the department’s operational expenses. Tickets can be purchased from any Ely firefighter or local merchants. Adult tickets are $6 in advance, $6.50 at the door, $3 for children 12 and under, and children 5 and under eat free. All-you-can-eat pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, milk, coffee and water will be served. Serving, rain or shine, from 6:30 a.m. to noon at the Ely Fire Department, 1300 Main St. in Ely.

Outdoor Movie Night at Randall Park Thursday, June 23

SOLON– Bring your lawn chairs or a blanket and join the Solon United Methodist Church at Randall Park the evening on June 23, for a showing of “*batteries not included.” The 1987 Steven Spielberg film stars Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy as owners and residents of a run-down apartment building and café in New York City’s East Village. They are befriended by extraterrestrial “flying saucers” who breathe new life into the struggle of the tenants in the building to save it from demolition. Film critic Roger Ebert described this movie as “sweet, cheerful, fun family entertainment.”

Solon water and sewer rates to increase effective July 1

SOLON– Solon’s water and sewer rates are set for their annual increase.
The third and final reading of two ordinances establishing new rates for water and sewer services passed unanimously at a Solon City Council meeting June 1.
The city has undertaken a policy of adjusting the rates annually. With the adoption of the two ordinances, municipal utility rates will increase by two percent effective July 1.
For water service, the base charge will jump to $11.42 for the first 1,500 gallons and $5.42 for each additional 1,000 gallons used in a month.
