Density rising: More units, more cars, more complaints

Developer agrees to more parking stalls, but site plan still tabled

SOLON– The site plan submitted by Mike Bails and Jeff Mekota for two eight-plexes in the Fox Ridge subdivision met all of Solon’s requirements and was recommended for approval by the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission.
The Spartan Structures developers had already scaled back from 24 to 16 residential units based on city input and the site plan was on the agenda for council consideration at an April 20 meeting.

Happy birthday, Tanner

Brad Wymer prepares to release a Chinese lantern in memory of his son, Tanner, during a special ceremony held during the Denny Gruber Coed Relays April 19 at the Solon Outdoor Events Center. Tanner, a Solon senior, was killed in a boating accident in January and would have turned 18 on April 19. A memorial bench has been installed near the thrower’s area at the track, and during a break in the meet, a moment of silence was held, those in attendance sang Happy Birthday, and family members, students and community members released a series of Chinese lanterns into the sky.

Macbride Raptor Project Family Day May 7

SOLON– Macbride Raptor Project (MRP) monthly Family Day will be held on Saturday, March 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Family Day is free and open to the public. The Raptor’s Nest (MRP educational center) will be open with staff and volunteers available to answer questions about the project and the raptors. Snacks and crafts will also be provided for guests.

June 9-12 declared NL city-wide garage sale weekend

NORTH LIBERTY– Local organizers have selected the weekend of June 10 for city-wide garage sales in North Liberty and have set up a website with information for sellers and buyers: northlibertygaragesales.com.
In addition to the website, garage-sale-goers will be able to pull up a mobile-friendly Google Map and find nearby sales by item categories.
“I always thought it was one of those things dying for an upgrade,” said organizer Lydia Fine. “I just wanted to make it easier for people to find what they need.”

Last minute decision to buy scratch ticket yields $50K prize for NL man

CLIVE– A last minute decision to buy a scratch ticket ended up being in a North Liberty man’s favor as he won a big prize.
William Hedges claimed the 24th of 30 top prizes of $50,000 available in the lottery’s “Super Crossword” scratch game.
Hedges said he stopped Wednesday at Fareway, 615 Westwood Drive in North Liberty, for some groceries and decided to buy a scratch ticket, as well.

Making pizza as a family

New owners of Maddi B’s Take N’ Bake Pizza Co. pass down values

SWISHER– Many people find a business they love and become a regular. Shawn Irons goes one step beyond: she buys the business.
That’s how she happened upon her newest business, Maddi B’s Take N’ Bake Pizza Co., a quaint little pizzeria and ice cream shop in Swisher. Eat-in booths were just added, along with a chalkboard wall for kids to draw on, making it a fun place for families to kick back and relax.
Since Irons and her family live within a mile of Maddi B’s, she said they frequently drove past the pizzeria. Every time Irons thought, “I just love this little place.”

“Footloose” rocks the CCA stage

Seniors shine in stage adaptation of ‘80s movie classic

TIFFIN– In 1984, “Footloose” became one of the most successful motion pictures of the year and of the decade. The story, written by Dean Pitchford, focuses on a big-city kid with a rebellious streak who moves to the small agricultural town of Bomont, Texas. There, he discovers the town’s preacher– in the wake of a tragedy involving his son and three other teens– has banned rock music and dancing.
