Vintage Estates housing cooperative announces plans for a 55+ community

NORTH LIBERTY– A 30-unit housing development being built in North Liberty isn’t typically unusual or out of the ordinary. However, A 30-unit development slated for construction this year is unusual in it will be a housing cooperative.
Vintage Estates of North Liberty, a Cooperative Community, will build the 30 single-family homes, and a community center, on a parcel of land along S. Jones Blvd.

Solon farmer Carmen Black and Rodale scientist Kristine Lang join PFI’s board of directors

Three others re-elected to fill farmer slots

Ames - Solon farmer Carmen Black and Rodale Institute scientist Kristine Lang, of Brandon, are the newest additions to Practical Farmers of Iowa’s board of directors. They were among five individuals elected in January by Practical Farmers members to join or renew their tenure on the 12-person board of directors.
The other three elected are farmers representing different regions of Iowa, including Ann Franzenburg of Van Horne; Wendy Johnson of Charles City; and Gayle Olson of Winfield. The board elections took place during PFI’s 2020 annual conference in Ames.

Solon firefighters log busiest year ever

SOLON– “We set a record again this year,” Chief Bob Siddell reported. “Four-hundred-fifty-eight calls. The most we’ve ever done as a fire department.”
Siddell presented the fire department’s 2019 annual report at a joint meeting of the Solon Tri-Township Emergency Response Agency and Solon City Council Jan. 22 in City Hall.
“And you can see the trend from 2014 (346 calls) until now is not going down,” he said. “With Solon growing, with the area outside of the community growing, those numbers I think are going to continue to increase.”

Firehouse fundraiser keeps chugging along $4,000-8,000 coming in weekly

SOLON– Over 550 people donated to the Solon Firehouse campaign, representing 28 states, 29 counties in Iowa and five countries.
Between cash and commitments, the Solon Firefighter Association raised about $670,000, according to Solon firefighter Greg Morris.
Morris has been working to raise funds for a year and a half, and the donations continue to come in at a rate of between $4,000-8,000 a week.
“That’s nothing to sneeze at,” he noted.
On a single recent day, Morris received contributions from people in Nebraska and Ohio.
“Which makes what we’re doing fun,” he said.

Warriors and Rams give Creek Boys a tough night

Scranton wins twice for CCA in double dual

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) wrestlers competed in their final dual meets of the regular season Thursday, Feb. 6, at Cedar Rapids Washington High School, against the host Warriors and Dubuque Senior Rams.
The Clippers fell, 51-14, to Dubuque Senior and, 57-21, to Washington.
Kael Scranton was a double winner for the Creek Boys, taking a 138-pound match against Senior’s Carter Elliot with a 12-3 major decision and winning a 132-pound match against Wash’s Joe Foreman with a pin in 1:57.

CR Kennedy cruises past Liberty girls, 50-35

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Liberty High varsity girls’ basketball team dropped to 2-14 on the season Tuesday, Feb. 4, on the road, as Cedar Rapids Kennedy roared past them, 50-35.
Sophomore Haley Napoli put the Bolts on the scoreboard first with a three-pointer, unfortunately for Liberty, it would be the only points of the first quarter as the Cougars pulled ahead, 12-3. Kennedy took a 31-13 halftime lead as Sam McPherson, Isabel Smith, Ava Meyer and Neshy Byrd fought to keep the Lightning in the game.

MARION– The “Trojan-Bolts” of the combined Iowa City West High and Liberty High School boys swim team claimed their second straight district championship Saturday, Feb. 8, at Linn-Mar High School in Marion, and will be a force to be reckoned with at the 2020 state meet Saturday, Feb. 15.

Creek Boys get revenge over Stormin’ Pointers

Schrepfer leads with 20 points as CCA knocks off CPU, 66-64

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys’ basketball team found revenge over the Center Point-Urbana (CPU) Stormin’ Pointers on Tuesday, Feb. 4, with a 66-64 WaMaC Conference win, at home. The Clippers avenged a 57-37 loss on Dec. 20 at CPU, which was tainted with controversy over the officiating, and saw the CCA student body ejected in the first quarter.
The Creek Boys and Pointers were tied 13-all at the end of the first period, in Tiffin, ahead of a 33-28 Clipper lead at halftime. The Pointers inched ahead in the third for a 49-46 advantage going into the final quarter.

CCA hires new associate superintendent

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School district has announced the hiring of Matt Leeman as Associate Superintendent/Director of Secondary Curriculum.
The new position will primarily oversee instructional programming for the district, working closely with directors and principals, but will also collaborate in other areas, according to a district press release.
The district interviewed four candidates for the position.

Trump and Warren win JoCo Caucus

Lots of participants, slim margins and a technical glitch make Caucus 2020 memorable

NORTH LIBERTY– The 2020 Caucus will be remembered for a number of reasons, including a glitch with a software application which delayed the Democratic results for several days.
Several precincts, for both the Democrats and Republicans, filled rooms at the North Liberty Community Center and clogged the parking lots. Overflow parking migrated to other nearby lots with Recreation Center staff fielding several angry phone calls from businesses whose lots were filled with caucus goers, preventing customers from parking.
