CCA XC continuing to make great strides

TIFFIN– They’re continuing to make great strides in growing the boys cross country program at Clear Creek Amana, but coach Ben Robison wants more.

Trojans hope for Dome return

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s Trojans made school history last year with the first state football championship bid since 1999. Unfortunately for West, they faced the three-time defending champions from West Des Moines Dowling, who beat the Trojans 23-10 in the championship game at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Devontae Lane told Traevis Buchanan at the time, “Remember how this feels. You don’t want to feel this again next year.”
It’s next year.

Starry Eyed Yoga at North Liberty pool Aug. 24

NORTH LIBERTY– Bring your mat and friends to join the North Liberty Recreation Center for an outdoor yoga-filled evening Thursday, Aug. 24, from 8-9 p.m. with Katie from Downward Dog Yoga & Fitness.

School board candidates speak

TIFFIN– Five out of six candidates for three seats on the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District’s Board of Directors participated in a candidates’ forum held Wednesday, Aug. 9. Current Board members Bob Broghammer (District No. 2) and Eileen Schmidt (At-Large) are running for re-election against Scott Rohret, Kathy Swenka and Shawn Zierke. Nikki Knapp, who was unable to attend, is running for the District No. 4 seat being vacated by Jim Seelman.

Ranshaw name preserved

Highway 965 receives honorary title

NORTH LIBERTY– It makes sense.
Ranshaw Way, the new honorary alias for Highway 965, once ran alongside 40 acres owned by one of North Liberty’s original settlers with the same name.
“Throughout the conversation, Ranshaw kept kind of making its way up the list,” said North Liberty City Council member Jim Sayre at an unveiling ceremony Friday, Aug. 11, on the lawn of the historic Ranshaw House off Penn Street. “It’s a great name.”

Swisher Fun Days

Kali Poe of Swisher takes her turn in the kiddie tractor pull Friday, July 28, in downtown Swisher. The event, sponsored by the Jefferson-Monroe Township Fire Department, was one of many that made up the 2017 Swisher Fun Days.

Solon Parks & Rec Department

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL REGISTRATION:

Registration for third-sixth grades ends Friday, Aug. 18. However, you can still register your child by Aug. 25 without a late fee. You can register online at https://solon-iowa.cogran.com/. More registration forms are available at the Solon Parks and Recreation website or can be picked up at city hall. Matches for all grades will be on Sunday afternoons/evenings, between 3-7 p.m., starting Sept. 17. Coaches meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 31, at 6:30 p.m. in Solon City Hall.

State releases policy for 2017-18 free and reduced price meals

DES MOINES– The Iowa Department of Education, Bureau of Nutrition and Health Services, has announced its policy for free and reduced price meals for children unable to pay the full price of meals served under the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program and the Afterschool Care Snack Program.
State and Local school officials have adopted the following family size and income criteria for determining eligibility:

Spartans kick off fall sports

SOLON– Although there was a gentle breeze, the winds of change are blowing in Solon.
As the sun began to set and the shadow of the new middle school touched the corner of Spartan Stadium, the Fall Sports Kickoff got underway at Spartan Stadium as the workers shut the gates, after policing equipment and materials, following a day of progress on the new intermediate building.

Annual fall facilities usage meeting Wednesday, Sept. 13, at SMS

SOLON– On Wednesday, Sept. 13, the annual fall facilities usage meeting will be hosted for all youth league teams for the months of October through December. The meeting is open to the public at 6 p.m. in the middle school commons.
