Water we going to do now?

Packed house for Gallery Acres West meeting with DNR

SOLON– It was a long meeting.
So what comes next?
Members of the Solon City Council and a standing-room-only crowd packed into City Hall Tuesday, Oct. 24, to question representatives of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) about efforts to resolve water supply issues for a nearby rural subdivision.
No official action was taken from council members and it wasn’t clear whether the marathon meeting shed any new light on how best to deal with unacceptable levels of arsenic in Gallery Acres West’s (GAW) drinking water.

Machine Shed Mantra

Senior football dads keep the spirit alive

SOLON– The “Machine shed mantra” has been a part of Solon football tradition since 1985, when Maury Miller, Coach Kevin Miller’s father, scrawled “Bear Season” on the building in reference to a rivalry game between the Solon Spartans and the West Branch Bears.
The original intent was to elevate the level of competition and has done so, for the last 32 years.

Hawkeye women have talent

Hawk Talk

When you start with Megan Gustafson (6-3) at center, you have a great player to build a basketball team around.
Gustafson, who was named First Team All-Big Ten last year, is a preseason first team pick this year.
She led the Hawks, averaging 18.5 points and 10.1 rebounds, shooting 65 percent from the floor.
Iowa Head Coach Lisa Bluder said Gustafson works hard on every single possession.
“She is an amazing player,” said the coach.
Iowa lost all-time leading scorer Ally Disterhoft and she won’t be easy to replace, but Iowa has some good talent coming back.

Iowa defense shines

Hawk Talk

For the second week in a row, the Hawkeye defense held its opponent to 10 points in regulation.
Last Saturday against Minnesota, the offense came up with 17 points and the pig stays in Iowa City... Iowa defeats Minnesota, 17-10.
That’s the sixth time this season Iowa has held an opponent to under 20 points.
Phil Parker, Iowa’s defensive coordinator, said he thought the Hawkeyes’ front seven was as good as he has seen it since he’s been here.
The defensive backfield was a different story.

Celebration of Life services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at St. John Lutheran Church, in Ely. Burial followed in Roger’s Grove Cemetery. Visitation was from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids.

Hawkeye fans – It’s so much more than a wave

A new tradition was born this year in Iowa City. The Stead Family Children’s Hospital was completed before this year’s Hawkeye football season opened. It is a beautiful silver building towering over Kinnick Stadium.
According to the website:

Walkin'

“What’s the name of the place again?” Sabra requested as she looked up from her plate of ratatouille. I pronounced her dish as “ratatatatouille,” something I tend to do when I find the original word funny.
Other words I like to butcher include quesadilla (quasidillios), hors d’oeuvre (horse dervies) and the Nebraskan town of Ogallala (ooogalalala).
We were at the Blue Bird Diner in downtown Iowa City; eating and talking about the play we were about to see at the Riverside Theatre.
