Five starters to lead Women of Troy

Iowa City West High girls cross country ready for action

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Five starters will lead the way on the cross country courses for the West High Women of Troy this season as the squad defends its 2013 Conference and Regional Championships.
Seniors Emmie Skopec and Maria Burtch, with sophomores Olivia Moore and Jessie and Gabby Skopec, return to the lineup for 2014. Burtch finished 77th at the State Meet in 16:12.1, Emmie Skopec was 32nd in 15:16.7. Moore completed the State Meet in 88th place in 16:24.1; Jessie Skopec was 25th (and second for West) in 15:07.2 while Gabby Skopec was 50th in 15:34.3.

Coach’s bump puts Clippers volleyball under new leadership for 2014 season

TIFFIN– It may be rough sailing for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers as the varsity volleyball season gets underway without Brian Bronzynski at the helm.
Bronzynski was relieved of his coaching duties earlier this year after his teaching position was cut, and he was told the CCA district would not offer him the coaching contract without a teaching position. This was in the wake of his wife Karla being diagnosed with cancer, and Bronzynski taking time away from school to be with her during treatment.

Invasive species eradication day Sept. 6

Join Iowa’s five land trusts to celebrate land protection in Iowa. Come for the volunteer day; stay for live music and lunch.
The Nature Conservancy, Bur Oak Land Trust (formerly known as Johnson County Heritage Trust), Whiterock Conservancy, Four Mounds Foundation and INHF will host a volunteer day to eradicate invasive species and take back the land with complementary lunch and live music to follow.
Turkey Creek Preserve (near Iowa City) at 2525 Sugar Bottom Rd. Solon, on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 9 a.m. until noon.

North Liberty’s annual Fun Run/Walk to be held Sept. 21

IOWA CITY– The North Liberty Steering Committee of the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce announces the annual North Liberty Fun Run/Walk on Sunday, Sept. 21, beginning at North Bend Elementary. Sponsored by MidWestOne Bank, the event features a 5K route and free kids’ race for children ages 12 and under.

Youth baseball and softball fun fall league to begin Sept. 8

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYBS) is providing a fun, relaxed baseball/softball experience for kids ages six through 10. The season consists of five sessions on Monday nights from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 8. The season will end on Oct. 6, or Oct. 13 if there is a rain-out during the season. CCA Foundation seeks 2014 Hall of Fame nominations

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana Foundation Board is seeking nominations for the 2014 Hall of Fame award. Application letters are due by Sept. 1 and should include at the minimum the following information: a) Name of nominee, b) Address of nominee, c) Year (if known) and school graduated from, d) Whether person is deceased, e) Why should this person be considered for this honor– provide as many details as possible (years of service, what was the service, offices held, etc.), f) Letter signed by nominator with address and phone number if questions.

Tiffin council considers tax rebate request for seed dealer

Big incentive for Big Country

TIFFIN– At odds over a tax rebate request, Tiffin City Council members nonetheless directed city administration to proceed with the paperwork to financially assist a local business with a planned expansion.
Big Country Seeds owner Dan Steines returned to the council Aug. 13 to ask for another five-year, 100 percent property tax rebate for a second expansion of his business. Tiffin council approved Big Country’s first expansion in 2013, for which Steines’ received a five-year, 100 percent tax rebate; the first the city has granted for longer than three years.

Progress continues on CCA school projects

OXFORD — Ray Willoughby started his building projects report to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school board with a little bit of good news.
“Ben (Macumber, principal of Amana Elementary) got his air turned on fully tonight,” Willoughby said, referring to the completion of a $453,000 renovation project at the school. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) work, along with electrical upgrades throughout the building, are two of several projects funded by a $48 million bond issue approved by voters in February for renovation and expansion.

North Liberty’s free summer lunch program a stirring success

NORTH LIBERTY– It started with a question posed by one small group:
When families, strapped for grocery money, rely on public schools’ free and reduced meal programs to help sustain nutrition throughout the school year, what happens in the summer months when kids are on their own?
It was answered by an entire community and a volunteer force of over 150 people.

2014 Optimist Fishing Derby

The Solon Optimist Fishing Derby was held July 19 during Beef Days with registration starting at 11:30 a.m. at Brosh’s Pond. The event was emceed and run by Doug Thompson. Terry Krob performed the paperwork of registering the entrants and tallying the fish they caught. President Chris Mottinger, member Tony Ulch and nonmember Matt Blinks measured and relayed the catch information to Terry. Marv Stastny assisted and took pictures. Joanne Ulch did the advertising, and got the fishing poles and worms. Denny Gruber caught and stocked the pond with some good-sized catfish.
