Old Gold Diner Year in Review 2016

2016 is over and we are already into February 2017. Time truly passes quickly when you are having fun. The year wasn’t totally fun. We mourned the loss of several friends, Catherine Ahrendt, Milt Hunt, Peg Martinek, Bob Stinocher, Bob Steinbrech, Jack Beranek and Clara Herman. Others have been unable to come for numerous other reasons. We miss them all and they all continue to come to mind frequently.

Bald Eagle Watch and Expo Feb. 4

NORTH LIBERTY– The fourth annual free Bald Eagle Watch and Expo will take place Saturday, Feb. 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event includes a live viewing at the Tailwater West Picnic Shelter downstream from the dam at Coralville Lake. Scopes and binoculars will be available for closer looks at the birds. Free hot chocolate and coffee will also be available.

Swisher American Legion Super Bowl Sunday Chili Cook Off Feb. 5

SWISHER– The Swisher American Legion will be hosting its Super Bowl Sunday Chili Cook Off Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, at the Legion. Entries must be to the Legion by 2 p.m. to be considered for first, second and third place prizes. One entry per person. The entry fee is $5.
After judging is complete, the public is welcome to an all-you-can-eat chili supper for $5.

First Presbyterian near Ely to host Red Cedar concert Feb. 24

ELY– Czech heritage runs deep at First Presbyterian Church near Ely and the church is excited to host a Czech-inspired free concert by Red Chamber Music held on Friday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. as part of the group’s Rural Outreach Concert series. The church is located west of Ely at 11100 Spanish Rd.

Another high-speed chase ends in Solon

SOLON– For the second time in just over two months, a high-speed chase beginning on Interstate 80 found its way to Solon.
The pursuit began on Interstate 80 near the Wilton exit on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at approximately 2:30 p.m., according to Capt. Randy Jones, area commander for the Iowa State Patrol district office in Cedar Rapids.

Running stop signs? Look for increased enforcement

SOLON– It’s going to take a little enforcement.
The city has received complaints about the number of people running stop signs around town.
At the conclusion of the Jan. 18 Solon City Council meeting, Mayor Steve Stange said, “quite a few complaints about vehicle traffic, mainly stop signs.”
Stange said he shared the information with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and they’ve been responsive to requests for enforcement.

Old Gold Diner hosts Solon school superintendent Feb. 15

SOLON– On Wednesday, Feb. 15, the Old Gold Diner will host Solon Community School District Superintendent Davis Eidahl at the February Sponsored Meal. Eidahl and Mike Kasparek will update the attendees of changes and future plans in the Solon Community School District. Be sure to mark your calendar to attend this meal.

Iowa Raptor Family Day Feb. 4

SOLON– The Iowa Raptor Project invites the public to another Family Day on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. February’s event features the Great Horned Owl, many of which are already nesting in the area.
Make your own owl baby out of cotton balls, pinecones, edible play dough and birdseed. Because they are edible for wildlife, kids can then put them out in the woods for the birds to munch on.
This free event takes place at 2095 Mehaffey Bridge Rd. NE, in Solon. The Iowa Raptor Project will have a fire going to help keep visitors warm.

Solon Knights of Columbus all-you-can-eat Breakfast Sunday, Feb. 5

SOLON– The Solon Knights of Columbus (KCs) will host an all-you-can-eat breakfast Sunday, Feb. 5, from 8 a.m. until noon at St. Mary Catholic Church parish hall. The cost is $6 for ages 12 and older, $3 for ages 6-11, and free for ages five and younger.
The KCs will serve scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage, pancakes and omelets on request.
