Beauty and the Beast dance in Tiffin

TIFFIN– True love and internal beauty won out over vanity and ego as the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School Drama Department performed the musical version of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” Thursday, April 19, through Saturday, April 22, in the Performing Arts Center, in Tiffin.

North Liberty’s advanced wastewater treatment plant

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s safe to say North Liberty’s a special place. And while the growing community maintains its small town ambiance, it certainly doesn’t cut corners. Even the city’s approach to wastewater treatment is top-notch– just ask newly appointed Superintendent Drew Lammers.
“Everybody throughout the city, residents included, should be proud of what we have,” Lammers remarked.

Plant overview

Built in 1967, North Liberty’s wastewater treatment plant underwent major upgrades in 1998 when it was a sequential batch reactor (SBR) facility.

Pantry golf tournament Friday, May 4

CORALVILLE– Registration is open for the North Liberty Community Pantry’s 8th Annual 4-Person Best Shot Golf Tournament held Friday, May 4.
Registration is at 7:30 a.m. with final check-in at 8:30 a.m. A shotgun start begins at 9 a.m. followed by a catered meal at 1 p.m. The tournament will take place at the Brown Deer Golf Club at 1900 Country Club Dr. in Coralville. The entry fee is $450 per team, prepaid. This includes a continental breakfast, green fees, a cart, a catered meal, driving range balls and team picture. A silent auction will also take place along with awards ceremony.

Kites for Kids honors child abuse victims

NORTH LIBERTY– Kites filled the sky above the football field at North Central Jr. High in North Liberty Saturday, April 21 during the Kites for Kids festival. The family-friendly activity was part of Child Abuse Prevention Month, and was held to recognize and honor children who have been affected by child abuse. It also recognized the many non-profit and social services organizations, which work tirelessly in an attempt to prevent child abuse.
While some families brought their own kites to fly, free kites were provided on-site, with minimal assembly required.

More advisory members named, farmers market to Mushroom Park

SOLON– There’s a lot of recreation news, folks.
The agenda for the Solon City Council last week was dominated by decisions about new recreation programs and projects, including continued appointments to a new recreation advisory team, the dissolution of the Solon Parks and Recreation Commission, an application to Iowa Great Places for the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA) in support of a splash pad and the selection of Mushroom Park as the location of a new farmers market.
Whew.

Solon Old Gold Diner May activities

• Thanks to the Phil Michel and company for representing the Memorials by Michel and sponsoring the April meal.

• Bingo is held Tuesdays and Thursdays with 11 a.m. Penny Bingo and following lunch play is for prizes with a black out final game for a free Old Gold Dinner meal ticket as the prize.

7th Annual Spartan Dash April 28

SOLON– The Lakeview Elementary PTO will be hosting its seventh annual Spartan Dash on Saturday, April 28, rain or shine. The Spartan Dash is a fun and crazy fitness event that will serve as the Lakeview PTO’s largest fundraiser of the year. Interested individuals should signs up to participate in the event with a “family team.” Family teams will walk, skip or run through obstacles set up along the 1-mile trail in the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA). Obstacles will be suitable for both children and adults and are guaranteed to have you laughing.

Harmony Hawks are coming to town

SOLON– Solon High School’s (SHS) vocal choirs will perform in an informal concert with the Harmony Hawks barbershop chorus Thursday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Solon Center for the Arts. All three Solon choirs will sing a song from their state contest set followed by the Harmony Hawks concert presentation.
The concert is free and open to the public. “If you have never heard barbershop live before, this is an awesome opportunity right on our home turf,” SHS Director of Choral Activities Joel Foreman. “We hope you can join us for a fun, free night of music making!”

Johnson County to lease, then purchase, Celebration Barn

OXFORD– The Johnson County Conservation Board (JCCB) unanimously approved entering a lease agreement with the Iowa Natural Heritage Trust Fund (INHF) for seven parcels of land known as The Celebration Barn.
The board took action during a Tuesday, April 17, meeting at Kent Park, ending speculation and rumors regarding the purchase.
