Disappearing women

Food For Thought

Several times a year, I drive to my hometown for lunch with some classmates who still live there, or who live close enough to make the trip occasionally. Sometimes, we are lucky to coincide with classmates who are vacationing and want to include a brief reunion as part of their trip. This monthly opportunity, along with our annual newsletter, keeps us in touch with each other, a habit that has become increasingly important to most of us over the years.

Indians end Lightning’s first season

Marion sweeps Liberty 3-0 in regional quarterfinal volleyball

MARION– The Liberty Lightning’s debut season of varsity volleyball came to an end Wednesday, Oct. 18, in a Class 4A Region 6 quarterfinal Match against the Marion Indians in Marion. The Indians swept the Lightning, 3-0 (25-22, 25-8, 25-13), to advance to a Tuesday, Oct. 24, match against Independence in Independence.
Olivia Slattery, a freshman, led Liberty with eight kills while sophomore LeeAnn Potter made six. Haley Hested had 18 assists and two ace serves.
The Lightning finished the season with a 13-20 record overall while the Indians improved to 26-13.

Women of Troy outswim Muskies

IC West 119, Muscatine 66 in regular season finale

MUSCATINE– Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy swimming and diving team closed out the regular season with a 119-66 varsity and 103-42 junior varsity (JV) win, on the road in Muscatine, against the Muscatine Muskies.
Individual varsity winners included Melanie Housenga in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle, Alleyna Thomas in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly, Rachel Hoeft in the 1-meter dive, Jennifer Du in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke and Jennifer Ernst in the 100-yard backstroke.

CCA surges past Central DeWitt, 29-14

DEWITT– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity Clippers and first-year head coach Gabe Bakker closed out the nine-week regular season with a 29-14 win Friday, Oct. 20, in DeWitt against Central DeWitt’s Sabers.
The Clippers broke a 7-7 tie at the end of the first quarter with a touchdown and field goal in the second for a 16-7 halftime lead. The Creek Boys struck again with a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters while the Sabers struck for the second and final time in the fourth.

West High runners head for state meet

IOWA CITY– West High’s Women of Troy will make their 23rd-consecutive State Cross Country Meet appearance Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Lakeview Golf Course in Fort Dodge after winning a Class 4A regional meet Thursday, Oct. 19, at the University of Iowa’s Ashton Cross Country Course in Iowa City. West topped the field with 29 points, and bested runner-up Cedar Falls by 35 points.

SOLON– Liberty High has its first state qualifiers for Class 3A athletics.
Freshman Camille Mac and sophomore Peter Woodward will represent the new school Saturday, Oct. 28, in the Class 3A State Cross Country Meet at the Lakeview Golf Course, in Fort Dodge.
The pair, who earned their first individual wins a week earlier, finished seventh (Mac) and ninth (Woodward) Thursday, Oct. 19, in a Class 3A state qualifying meet at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area.

PELLA– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity girls cross country squad posted an 11th-place team finish Thursday, Oct. 19, at a Class 3A state qualifying meet at Central College, in Pella. Pella won the girls meet with 46 points, while Dallas Center-Grimes was the runner-up with 61. North Polk was third in points with 68. All three teams qualified for the state meet on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge. The Creek Girls were 11th in points with 271.

Women of Troy swimmers drown Linn-Mar Lions

CORALVILLE– Iowa City West High’s swimming and diving team put another dual meet win in the books Tuesday, Oct. 10, as they drowned the Linn-Mar Lions on Senior Night. The West High varsity won, 125-61, while the junior varsity prevailed, 118.5-56.5.
Individual West High varsity winners included senior Alleyna Thomas (200-yard freestyle), senior Melanie Housenga (200-yard Individual Medley, 100-yard freestyle), freshman Aurora Roghair (50-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke) and sophomore Lily Ernst (100-yard butterfly, 100-yard breaststroke).

Wahlert wins MVC sophomore championship swimming

MARION– Dubuque Wahlert Catholic High School won the 2017 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Sophomore Championship Swimming and Diving Meet Saturday, Oct. 21, at Linn-Mar High School in Marion.
Individual winners for the Women of Troy were Aurora Roghair in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle and Lily Ernst in the 200-yard IM and 100-yard butterfly while Roghair, Ernst, Kate Netolicky and Anna Reese won the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Clippers run in WaMaC middle school XC meet

Haidyn Barker and 7th grade girls take runner-up title

CENTER POINT– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Middle School cross country squads competed Monday, Oct. 9, in the WaMaC Conference Middle School Championships in Center Point.
CCA’s seventh grade girls were the runner-up squad with 53 points behind champion Mount Vernon-Lisbon (33 points) and led by Haidyn Barker in a second-place performance in 13:42, just four seconds behind winner Marleigh Louvar of Independence.
