Hawk Talk

I went to the College Football Hall of Fame about 10 years ago and thought it would be fun to check out the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
I’ve been planning the road trip to Canton, Ohio, for a few years and a couple of weeks ago finally pulled the trigger.
Two of my homeboys, Tim Nolte and Kirk Neustrom, loaded up my car with refreshments, reading material and tunes on Sunday, June 5, and hit the road. It was a 590-mile, nine-hour journey. It probably would have been eight hours except for the road construction in Illinois (not one of our favorite states).

Joette Meyer:<i> A beautiful send-off</i>

“Late in August, it’s going to hit me that I’m not going back,” Meyer said of retiring from the Solon Community School District in May after 37 years of teaching local kids.
Meyer, 60, spent all but one of her 38 years in education in the Solon district.
A native of the Solon/Iowa City area, she attended country school for a few years before she and a relative were moved to the Solon district by their respective parents.


Ginny Kunkel: <i>A wealth of support</i>

“I always just enjoyed school,” said Kunkel, who retired from teaching fifth grade in the Solon Community School District this spring after 35 years in the field. “I can’t remember not wanting to go to school. It seemed a good fit for me.”
Kunkel, 57, grew up in Solon but didn’t decide what she wanted to do with her life until after she graduated from high school in 1972.
She had two aunts who were teachers, had volunteered in the Iowa City schools and even took some education courses at the University of Iowa to get a taste before settling on a career.


Golf carts to be puttering around town soon

SOLON– If you’ve been wanting to drive your golf cart around town, you may soon get your chance.
A draft ordinance allowing golf carts on Solon’s city streets will be making its way to the members of the Solon City Council as early as a July 6 meeting.
“It’s on the agenda because I’ve had over the last six months probably four or five people approach me independently and say, ‘Well, have you ever talked about this?’” explained Mayor Rick Jedlicka at last week’s regular council session. “And I’m telling them we’ve never talked about it, so we’re going to talk about it.”


Summer Reading Program

“The Summer Reading Program is still going really well,” Jen Leveck, Youth Services Librarian reported again this week. “The T-shirts are going fast as patrons complete the T-shirt challenge activity sheet.” To be assured of receiving a T-shirt, complete those challenges and get the sheets turned in.


Website expands

The latest addition to the library website is “A to Z” which includes, maps on-line, the USA, World Travel and World Culture. Access all this information through the library website, www.solon.lib.ia.us. Pick up a bookmark at the circulation desk to give you the user name and password to access all four databases. Log on and explore!

“Suze Orman’s Money Class:” Financial guru Suze Orman gives her views on how to secure a hopeful and sustainable future in today’s economy. After the upheavals of recent times, she believes that it’s necessary to rethink many traditional strategies for financial success.
“A Small Act” (2010) A documentary about a young Kenyan whose life changes drastically when his education is sponsored by a Swedish stranger. Years later, he founds his own scholarship program to replicate the kindness he once received.


New books for adults

Regular patrons have probably already discovered some of the new books on the shelf. If you see something here that you’d like to read and it is checked out, call and add your name to the hold list. Plenty of good summer reads are turning up for a great afternoon on the patio or porch.


Library popularity continues

The excitement of the summer programming continues to draw lots of patrons to the library. Jen Leveck, Youth Services Librarian, commented on the Mad Science Mix with the Grout Museum. “He put on a great show that included lots of fire, mini explosions and a huge snake named Bully.” The turnout was fantastic and we had lots of positive comments after the show. Almost everyone stuck around to say hi to Bully and feel his snaky skin.
