New ball diamond not hitting home yet

NORTH LIBERTY– As North Liberty officials firmed up spending decisions for the upcoming fiscal year, the city’s Capital Improvements Plan (CIP) was the focus of discussion at a budget work session Tuesday, Jan. 31.
City Administrator Ryan Heiar asked for direction from the council on most CIP projects listed for FY13, including the purchase of a generator for the North Liberty Community Center, planned street improvement projects and whether or not to participate in a proposed regional animal shelter facility.

North Liberty joins area delegation in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C.– North Liberty officials are meeting with legislators in Washington, D.C. this week to lobby for federal funding.
North Liberty City Administrator Ryan Heiar and Mayor Tom Salm were among the delegation of elected officials and city representatives to meet with federal legislators and their staff as part of the Iowa City Area Chamber’s annual lobbying trip to Washington, D.C.

Tiffin faces towering prospect

TIFFIN— As Tiffin continues to expand, the Johnson County community is facing growing demands on its infrastructure.
One such shortcoming is in the municipal water supply. Former Mayor Royce Phillips felt a new tower was an important project, and new Mayor Steve Berner concurs.

Keeping it civil

IOWA CITY– Public participation and community involvement in government is an essential part of the democratic process and local politics. But comments by one speaker at Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) meetings have been called into question by the school board.
ICCSD holds a place on the agenda for “Community Comments,” time set aside for anyone from the area to speak for a short amount of time about the schools. Participants must sign a form and request an address with the board.
Former ICCSD board candidate Phil Hemingway is a public commentary regular at the microphone.

Garner school to host Waffle Breakfast Saturday, Feb.11

NORTH LIBERTY– Garner Elementary will host a Waffle Breakfast and Class Basket Auction on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 7 until 11 a.m. at the school.

Actor Kirk Cameron to keynote Heritage school fundraiser

CORALVILLE– Heritage Christian School will hold the Heritage Christian School Educating for Eternity fundraising event on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Marriott Hotel Ballroom, 300 E. Ninth St., Coralville. Everyone is invited. The reception and chance to meet the teachers is at 5:30 p.m., with the full dinner followed by Kirk Cameron, at 6:20 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person. Dine out for education on Feb. 23

ICCSD Foundation announces second annual dining out fundraiser

oundation invites you to help support district schools by doing one simple thing– eating out any time on Thursday, Feb. 23. On that date, participating restaurants will donate 10 percent of their sales (excluding alcohol) to the foundation to support educational programs that benefit students in the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD).

NL approves more cash for ICAD

NORTH LIBERTY– The Iowa City Area Development (ICAD) group wants more investment for its return.
The City of North Liberty is willing to give it to them.
The North Liberty City Council informally approved setting aside $50,000 for ICAD in fiscal year 2013, an increase of $35,000 from its previous $15,000 annual allocation to that group. At a budget work session Jan. 31, the council reviewed its Capital Improvements Plan, and discussed ICAD’s request for more funding in the upcoming year.

Council discusses regional animal shelter

NORTH LIBERTY– There’s only about a month to decide whether or not to join the pack.
North Liberty City Council members briefly discussed the request from Iowa City to help fund an animal care and adoption center that would serve the entire area during their budget work session Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The little store with a big heart

SHUEYVILLE— She calls it “the little store with a big heart.” Gail Boothe, owner of Space Doctors Interiors has packed her tiny shop from front to back with a wide variety of home décor items.
Boothe said she has spent her whole life making people happy with their living spaces. In high school she started painting and applying wall coverings. As an adult, she bought older homes and renovated and remodeled them.
