Leading Edge provides camp for youth with hemophilia June 24

MT. VERNON– Finding the right summer camp for your children is tough, but when you have a special needs child with hemophilia it’s particularly important to find one that takes extra precaution - injuries for this group of kids can lead to bleeding into their joints and muscles.


Dying fish found in local pond

NORTH LIBERTY–The North Liberty Parks Department received a call on May 26 from a resident regarding a fish kill at Goose Lake. City personnel responded immediately and discovered many fish dead or dying along the shoreline.
Paul Sleeper, fish biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources visited the site within two hours and determined that the fish were infected with a disease called Flavobacterium Columnare, a common bacterial infection found in many home aquariums. The disease is also known as Columnaris, Cotton-Wool, Cotton-Mouth, Flexibacter Columnaris, and Mouth Fungus.

NORTH LIBERTY — They all have an alias. Bruce Wayne’s alias: “Batman.” Clark Kent’s alias: “Superman.” Peter Parker’s alias: “Spiderman.” And the alias of North Liberty resident Cody Mason? “The Bugman.”
No, Mason doesn’t have supernatural powers. He doesn’t don a set of tights, a mask, and a cape. He doesn’t battle evil doers in the pages of a comic book, but he does battle insects and pests capable of doing evil in homes and businesses.


1975, PART II

IOWA CITY– Bob Commings and Lute Olsen were in their second years of coaching football and basketball at Iowa, I was in my second year of being a student football manager for the Hawkeyes and football tickets were $7 (they are $50 now!) for football games.
Dan Gable was in his fourth year as assistant wrestling coach and Iowa women’s basketball was in its second year of existence.
Gerald Ford was president, the Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl and Archie Griffin won his second Heisman.
Cincinnati won the World Series and Golden State won the NBA title.

Walkin'

After a winter of gluttony I am once again on a quest to shed pounds.
Over the years I’ve tried a variety of diets, including the cabbage soup (slurp soup until you’d rather die than be slim), the low fat (I fantasize about an extra marital affair with a bag of chips), the low carb (bacon, bacon, bacon but no bread to wrap around a BLT) and the sea food (see food but don’t eat it).


Food for Thought

It has been over three years since my husband’s death and, while there are some memories – both good and bad – that will never go away, I have come to terms with one of the toughest of them. I suppose it’s normal to feel a certain amount of responsibility toward those we love, be it parent, sibling, spouse or child. When we feel ineffectual at protecting or comforting them, it is surely universal to feel twinges of guilt at not having done more – or at not having been able to do more.


Hawks in the year 1975

IOWA CITY– It’s time to take a break from covering the current Hawkeyes and flash back to the year 1975.
I was in my second year of being a student manager for the Hawkeye football team and Bob Commings was in his second year of being head coach.
Top assistants included offensive coordinator Howard Vernon, who became principal at City High, Bernie Wyatt, who also coached under Hayden Fry and helped Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl plus Dennis Green, who coached the Minnesota Vikings and the Arizona Cardinals in pro football.


Widening project narrows

NORTH LIBERTY– Planned upgrades to Highway 965 will move forward, but not at the pace expected, and probably without financial assistance.
Lack of federal earmark dollars, the defeat of the Local Option Sales Tax ballot measure and a denied grant application has eliminated much of the funding the City had hoped to use to kick off the $30 million, 7-phased project.

NORTH LIBERTY–You could say Dr. Luke Carlson of Johnson County Chiropractic got his start through a taste of what became his own medicine.
While attending the University of Iowa as a Physical Therapy student, Carlson experienced some pain, and thus visited a chiropractor.
“He got me fixed up, and I immediately thought, ‘That’s what I want to do,’” Carlson said.
