Iowa House District 73

WEST BRANCH– David Johnson knows about small town Iowa and small town government. After four years on the West Branch City Council, he also understands that a lot of the issues facing Iowa’s small towns and their governing bodies need to be addressed at the state level.
To that end, Johnson has announced his bid to run for the Iowa State House in 2012.

Booster clothing sale

The Solon Athletic Booster Club will hold its clothing open house Wednesday, Dec. 7, from 4 until 7 p.m. in the Solon High School commons.

Candy Land is a celebration of childhood fantasy

By Toni Russo
Special to the Economist
SOLON– The chocolate leaves are falling from the lollipop tree. An icing wind blows down from the Gum Drop Mountains and covers the roof of the gingerbread house with pink frosting. In the Molasses Swamp, the pecan turtles and jelly sugar fish hide behind tall stalks of caramel slow pokes. The gingerbread children are at the crooked old peanut brittle house, and the game begins.

SOLON– The Solon Community School preschool will be entertaining during lunch at the Old Gold Diner Friday, Dec. 16. Please call 319-624-2251 for lunch reservation to enjoy their visit.
A class of fourth graders will be sharing a meal with the seniors Wednesday, Dec. 21. Please sign up by calling 319-624-2251. The goal is to have a senior for every fourth grader.

New magazines added

Two new magazines have been added to the collection. “Wired” is a monthly magazine that reports on how new and developing technology affects culture, the economy and politics. It was acquired with My Coke Rewards points donated by patrons. We also now have “The New Yorker” a weekly magazine of reportage, commentary, criticism, essays, fiction, satire, cartoons and poetry. This is available through a patron donation. Remember the current issue is available to read in library, but past issues of any magazine can always be checked out.

Last chance to see trees

Only a few days remain in the Habitat for Humanity tree decorating contest. If you haven’t stopped at the library to see the beautiful trees, be sure to get there before the end of the week. Over 20 decorated Christmas trees are in place in the reading area at the west end of the library. A silent auction, now in progress, will continue through noon, Dec. 10 when trees will be awarded to the highest bidders. All proceeds will go toward the Habitat house that will be built on Dubuque Street in Solon.

Library holiday decorations

Over 100 teddy bears are adorning the “beary” special Christmas tree in the children’s section of the library. Be sure and stop and take a look. Toni Russo’s “Candy Land” display window features two wonderful gingerbread houses baked and decorated especially for the window by Mark Mueller. See the feature story for all the details on her latest creation (page 2). Stained glass Santa Clauses from around the world are hanging gaily in the windows behind the circulation desk. These Santa Clauses were all crafted by Charles Whetstine and are on loan to the library for the holiday season.
