Lady Spartans invited to dance

VICTOR– The Lady Spartans have punched their ticket for a trip to Cedar Rapids.
Solon defeated No. 15 Oskaloosa, 3-1, in a regional final last Tuesday (Oct. 30) in Victor and will now face No. 3 Harlan (32-5) in the first round of the Class 4A volleyball tournament Wednesday, Nov. 7 (tonight) at 6 p.m. on Court Two of the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

No. 1 Decorah ends Solon’s playoff hopes

DECORAH– Solon scored the first three points, but the next 35 points came from No. 1 Decorah in last Monday night’s second round game in the Class 3A football playoffs. The Spartans took the opening kickoff and scored a field goal, but the Vikings went on to score 35 unanswered points on the way to a 35-10 win, bouncing Solon from the postseason with an 8-3 record.
Most of the damage was done by the Vikings in the second quarter.

Honoring their valor

SWISHER- Joseph “Fred” Novotny, a former petty officer, third class, in the U.S. Navy, served his country in the vast Pacific Ocean theatre during World War II.
He remembered the change he saw in what was previously enemy territory, when the crew of the U.S.S. Arenac, an amphibious attack transport vessel that carried hundreds of troops, landed in the just-surrendered islands of Japan in Sept. 1945.
The occupying U.S. troops were greeted with welcome signs.

Keeping it Lite

NORTH LIBERTY– Dana Cordero likes to keep things light.
“If people are having fun, it shows in their portraits,” said Cordero.
It’s one of the reasons she has become known for her senior portrait sessions.
“I guess word got out that it doesn’t have to be a painful experience,” she laughed.
Cordero’s new LiteRite Photography studio at 595 Ashley Ct. in North Liberty was born of a painful experience, but Cordero has the good nature to see the silver lining behind the rain-soaked clouds of 2008.

Pinnacle of success

By Lori Lindner
North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– It could be a good experience getting sent to this principal’s office.
At least, Vicki Reynolds thinks so. A former teacher and elementary school principal in the public education system, Reynolds has opened Pinnacle Learning Center in North Liberty, a place where students can come for individualized programs and specialized instructors to supplement their regular education.
