Free energy efficiency rehab training in September, October

NORTH LIBERTY– The Center on Sustainable Communities’ (COSC) next stops on its Energy Efficiency Rehab Training tour are DeWitt and North Liberty. This free statewide program supports North Liberty’s Hometown Rewards program and offers the most comprehensive renovation training focusing on sustainable building techniques and energy efficiency available. Attendees will take modules 1-7 in DeWitt and complete the program with modules 8-14 in North Liberty.

DeWitt Community Center

Sept. 14– 6 until 9:30 p.m.
Sept. 15–8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Experience counts

TIFFIN– “CCA will be right in the fight,” said varsity volleyball coach Brian Bronzynski. His fourth year at the helm finds little change to the starting line-up.
Last year, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers put up a 20-11 record with a tie for first place (with Marion) in the WaMaC West. The postseason came to an abrupt halt in the first round of regional play with a 1-3 loss on the road at Maquoketa, a loss still very much on Bronzynski’s mind. “We should’ve been able to go deeper into the regional tournament.”

CCA football 2012 looking forward, upward

TIFFIN– For the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers, there’s nowhere to go but up. After a 2011 season marred by suspensions and an 0-9 record, the Clippers hope their time in the dry dock of the postseason and on the practice field will yield better results.

West volleyball starting from scratch (almost)

IOWA CITY– 2011 was a banner year for the West High Women of Troy on the volleyball court: 4A state tournament banner, Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) tournament champs (fourth consecutive) and MVC regular season champs banner (third consecutive).
Add in their second consecutive Class 4A state championship, and 2011 was an emotional rollercoaster for the team as they spent the season mourning and honoring friend and teammate Caroline Found. Found was killed in August just weeks before the school year started.

Johnson County Heritage Trust calls for public comment in accreditation process

JOHNSON COUNTY– Land trusts are organizations that protect natural areas and preserve land for public use, and Johnson County Heritage Trust has been carrying out that mission in Johnson County since 1978. With the support of generous donors and members, Johnson County Heritage Trust (JCHT) has helped set aside eight local natural areas for the enjoyment and education of the public, and holds conservation easements on eleven properties to help sustain the county’s prairies, woodlands, wetlands and sites of historic or scenic interest.

Looking for some depth

IOWA CITY– The start of a new season is a challenge for any coach, and West High’s Brian Martz is no exception. The Trojan Cross Country team lost a number of seniors to graduation, and Martz said his squad needs “(some guys to) step up to the plate and rise to the occasion if we are going to challenge for a conference championship or a team berth at state this year.”

A small boost for a big program

It was granted by the North Liberty City Council last Aug. 14.

Food For Thought

Newsflash! In England, chocolate has been declared a health food. The flavinoids (whatever those are) in dark chocolate have been proven to be beneficial in helping the body absorb some of the nutrients in food. And it is now recommended even to diabetics, who long have been deprived of such decadent treats. There’s one catch, though. Contrary to most people’s thinking that if a little is good, more is better, you should have no more than the equivalent of half a candy bar per week. Hardly enough for a good chocolate binge– or even a mild self-indulgence.

Walkin'

I break several laws every day...
There’s a stop sign near our house I regularly roll through in my car, for example. If police were present, I’d get a ticket but I don’t, never have, as I always make sure no one is around. If a pedestrian, another vehicle or, most decidedly, a squad car is in sight, I come to the complete stop law requires. If no one hears or sees it happen, like the proverbial tree falling in a forest, then it didn’t happen or matter.
