Bring leftover Christmas trees to Belgum Grove

JOHNSON COUNTY– Wondering what to do with your leftover Christmas trees?
Bring them to swim with the fishes.
Leftover Christmas trees can be used in ponds as fish habitats. Fish enjoy using natural wood for laying eggs and as secure hiding places. Johnson County Heritage Trust volunteers will place leftover Christmas trees in the Belgum Grove pond for this purpose.
Clear your trees of decoration– especially tinsel– and bring them to the Johnson County Heritage Trust Belgum Grove property, four miles west of Hills, on the south side of 500th St. (County Road F62).

CCA piloting an evaluation process

OXFORD — How does a school district know if its teachers are engaging their students? How does a school district know if its teachers are employing professional methods of instruction?
These and other questions are the driving force behind a pilot program underway in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School District.
District Superintendent Dr. Paula Vincent reported on the project at the December meeting of the board of directors.

Mercy Sports hosts open houses this January

NORTH LIBERTY - Mercy Sports Care at Core Fitness, 395 Jordan Street, invites the public to attend one of three open houses in January, designed to familiarize athletes with the Athletic Republic sports performance training program and discuss injury prevention and treatment with a certified physical therapist.

Loads of help at Christmas: Optimists ease burden on families

NORTH LIBERTY — For many families, Christmas break is not only two weeks of relative freedom from the rigors of the school day, but also two weeks of planning additional meals to feed the kids.
It can be difficult to stretch a household food budget that far.
The North Liberty Optimists Club, for the last five years, has stepped in to help.

Iowa City superintendent to depart for new job

Next year the Iowa City School District will have to face its challenges with a new superintendent.
Last week the current superintendent, Lane Plugge, accepted a job as chief administrator of the Green Hills Area Education Agency, a newly minted AEA that will span 15 counties in western Iowa and serve 56 school districts, including schools in Creston and Council Bluffs.
Plugge said a large portion of his family, including his mother and three brothers, live in Nebraska, and this new position appealed to him because he will be able to closer to them.

Walkin'

It’s finally happened.
For the first time in over 10 years I’ve headed out on a walk without Buzz.
Just two years ago the hound would beg to go. If for some reason I was home and we didn’t walk, he’d follow me around and give me long hard stares, letting out an occasional whine until he got his way.
Not that it’s a big imposition; I love to walk and some of my happiest moments during the past decade have been on hikes with him. As I’ve detailed in this space there was the time:

Food for Thought

I’ve reached the stage in my life where I have no answer when somebody asks me what I want for Christmas. I can think of very few things that I want – and nothing that I actually need. It’s easier to tell them what I DON’T want. Those things are numerous, and I suspect there are a number of people in circumstances similar to mine, who may feel the same as I do about Christmas gifts.

The Hawkeye men and women host Drake Bulldogs

IOWA CITY– The outside shots were falling, the defense stepped up in the second half, the inside game was clicking and the Hawks took care of the ball…oh yeah and Matt Gatens was the man.
That all added up to Iowa’s 4th win of the season, 71-67 over instate rival Drake.
This could be the most complete game of the Hawkeyes season against a pretty good team that had won three straight.
We’ll do a little good, bad and ugly on the game last Saturday.
