West volleyball soars over Jefferson J-Hawks

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– If West High coach Kathy Bresnahan were to fill out a report card for her Women of Troy varsity volleyball team at this point in the season, it would likely contain the words “not working up to their potential.”
The team took care of visiting Cedar Rapids Jefferson Tuesday night in three games, in convincing fashion: 25-12, 25-11 and 25-11; but the coach was not happy with what she saw out on the floor.

Food For Thought

I’ve often thought that the new year should begin in September rather than the middle of the winter. As a child, September seemed to be the beginning of new things. School started. I think I looked forward to school more than I did to Christmas or my birthday. When school started, so many things about my life changed. There were new clothes, new shoes– stiff and brown and sure to cause blisters after a summer of sandals and bare feet.

Walkin'

The one-legged chicken my cousin Mike and his spouse Darlene cooked on their grill sums up about how I feel about my relatives in Wisconsin and the dairy state in general.
As I detailed last week, my brother and I drove Mom and Dad to Wittenberg (population 1,177) recently for a quick family reunion over a couple of beers with aunts, uncles and later, a few cousins.
Mike and Dar have interesting stories.
