Women of Troy split, trading shut-outs and remembering “Line”

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Tuesday night was tough for the Women of Troy, when the squad faced-off against a potential regional semifinal opponent. The Mustangs of Dubuque Hempstead galloped into town, and West was dealt its first loss in 17 outings.
Tuesday also would have been the 18th birthday of beloved friend and teammate, the late Caroline Found.

Clipper girls are red hot

By Chris Umscheid

OXFORD– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) scoreboards are getting quite a workout these days. The board at the boys’ diamond in Tiffin sputtered and failed during a June 14 doubleheader against Waterloo Columbus that saw 27 runs go up in one game. Monday, June 18, the board in Oxford at the softball diamond wouldn’t even turn on.
Perhaps it knew the Clippers were going to fry its electronic mind with 42 runs over seven innings.

Swisher sets its course for the future

SWISHER– “If Swisher doesn’t define itself, someone else will.”
But Kehla West, Swisher’s summer planning intern, said she believes the community is too valuable for that to happen.
West grew up on a farm in a similar-sized town in Indiana and will conduct a June community survey about Swisher’s future. In May, she started work as a part-time intern to draft a comprehensive plan for the town.

1932 to 2012<br> Linder tire

By B. Adam Burke
North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– 1932 was a hard time to start a business, but in hard times there is often opportunity.
That was the year Henry Linder, with an Iowa City High School diploma and a few years of experience at Bernie Sparks Standard Tire, bought a bankrupt tire business for $2,800.
His shop was relocated to its current Iowa City location on Riverside Drive in 1973 and today his grandson, John J. Linder, runs Linder Tire Service, in business for 80 years.

Food For Thought

Raccoons dug up my son’s tomato plants– twice. We won’t know for a while if the electric fencing he put up will prevent further vandalism. I see them early, just after the sun is up, making their way back from the pond. I suspect that, if they didn’t have the pond so handy, they would go the other way to the creek in the pasture. Raccoons do need water. Not only to drink, but to help them eat. We once thought it charming that they so carefully washed their food before eating it.

Walkin'

A couple of years ago I wrote and received a grant to plant several small trees at the elementary school where I’ve been working part time. The low bid came from a company owned by Mennonites, and despite driving to the worksite in a truck all of the other labor was done by hand. You could tell the three-man crew– two young and one older– knew what they were doing as there was very little wasted motion. The young bucks did most of the heavy labor while the old man supervised and pitched in occasionally.
