Shearon Contreras

Shearon Contreras, 85, of Iowa City and North Liberty, died Sunday, April 15, at Iowa City Care Center.
Family services are planned at a later date.
Shearon was born April 27, 1929, in New York, N,Y. She married Nicholas Contreras in Chicago, where they resided for many years. Shearon moved to Iowa in 2004 to be near family.
Survivors include her three children, Cynthia, Angelo and Gregory; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Ganos of Lake Villa, Ill., Shaila Hickey of Davenport and Stacie Ganos of Coralville; seven great grandchildren, Hailey, Emma, Nicolas, Sariyah, Tavien, Kallen and Kenley.

James Eden

James Eden, 87, of Lone Tree, passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. A celebration of life was held April 20 at the Sorden-Lewis home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree. Burial will be held at a later date.

Brett Jeffrey Smith

Brett Jeffrey Smith, 19 of Solon, died Monday, April 16, 2012, at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Celebration of Life Services were held Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon. Visitation was Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church. Brosh Chapel in Solon is handling arrangements.

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye women won 19 games, ended the regular season with eight straight wins and finished tied for second in the Big Ten.
They lost their first game in the Big Ten Tournament and first game in the NCAA Tournament, so it wasn’t a great finish.
I sat down with assistant coach Shannon Gage last week in her new office in Carver which has a great view, unlike her old office.
Shannon was Director of Basketball Operations for the Iowa women’s basketball team from 2003-05. She was assistant coach at Michigan from 2005-07 and has been with the Hawkeyes ever since.

Special events ordinance stymies county board

IOWA CITY– A new ordinance written to regulate special events held in the county has thus far not smoothed the way for applicants.
Last week, it brought one more stumbling block for rural Solon resident Dick Schwab, as members of the Johnson County Board of Adjustment argued over the proper application of its language.

Solon council approves Windmill Estates preliminary plat

SOLON– Yellow light, green light.
At an April 4 meeting, members of the Solon City Council had concerns about approving a preliminary plat for the fourth phase of the Windmill Estates development.
By the April 18 meeting, those issues had been informally resolved.
Council members last week approved a preliminary plat for just over eight acres of land in Windmill Estates Part 4, as well as a zoning change from R-3 to R-4.

Solon Legion Riders poker run May 12

SOLON– The Solon American Legion Riders have scheduled their annual poker run for May 12. The route travels to Marshalltown, Newton, Knoxville, Oskaloosa and Riverside and returns to Solon for the drawing of cards and food, which will be available for a free-will donation. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with last bike out by 9:30 a.m. Last bike in by 6 p.m. for the poker draw. Cost is $10 per bike and $5 per passenger. Proceeds help fund a $500 scholarship for a graduating Solon senior and other rider projects.

Community pantry meeting May 1

SOLON– Everyone is invited to the Solon Community Pantry meeting Tuesday, May 1, at 7 p.m. at the Solon Public Library. Basic information and procedures will be discussed and volunteer opportunities offered to those interested. The Solon Community Food Pantry is a collaborative effort of three Solon churches, Our Lord’s Church, Solon United Methodist Church and St Mary Catholic Church along with the Solon Senior Advocates and local organizations, groups and residents.

Women’s Club May Day breakfast May 5

SOLON– GFWC/Iowa Solon Women’s Club will sponsor a May Day Breakfast on Saturday, May 5, from 7 until 11 a.m. at the Solon United Methodist Church serving egg and meat casseroles, homemade kolaches and rolls, fruit, orange juice, coffee and milk. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children five to 12 at the door. Children under five eat free. Books of adult tickets may be purchased ahead of time at five tickets for $25, with books of children’s tickets at five tickets for $12. (Discount tickets are not available at the door).
