Solon girls punch ticket to state tournament

Late-inning heroics lift Lady Spartans in regional final

SOLON– With two strikes in the count, Nichole Oberthien laid down a bunt.
The play went to the plate, where Tara Lance slid wide of the tag to give the Lady Spartans a sixth-inning 4-3 lead over Center Point-Urbana (CP-U).
In the top of the seventh, Solon added two more insurance runs, the first of which prompted Solon Head Softball Coach Jim White to leap in the air joyously and repeatedly along the third base sideline.

Lake Macbride State Park named to top U.S. fishing, boating list

SOLON– Lake Macbride State Park, west of Solon, was recognized among the 2016 Top 100 Family Friendly Places to Boat and Fish in the U.S., according to Take Me Fishing.
“I’m not surprised by this recognition,” said Nick Rocca, Lake Macbride State Park ranger. Rocca talked to many park users and campers that come from near and far to fish Macbride. “They always have good things to say about coming to Macbride to fish.”

Cappy’s Boys split with Stormin’ Pointers

CENTER POINT– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity baseball team, known as “Cappy’s Boys” after their unofficial mascot, moved to a 17-19 record with a split against the Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana in a doubleheader Tuesday, July 5, in Center Point.
The Pointers pulled off a lead change in the sixth inning of game one to take a 6-5 win, but the Clippers regrouped and pounded the Pointers, 15-3, in a six-inning nightcap.

CCA takes two from South Tama, 10-0 and 12-6

Creek boys end regular season at .500

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers’ varsity baseball team finished the regular season with a home doubleheader sweep of South Tama Friday, July 8. Capy’s Boys knocked off the Trojans 10-0 and 12-6. The pair of wins improved CCA’s record to 19-19 and marked the third straight year the team finished at .500 or above. Coach Brent Henry noted, “Seniors Jake Neubauer and Robby Swails are members of the winningest four-year stretch in the program’s history.”

Trojans sweep Little Hawks in annual two-day doubleheader

IC West wins, 11-1 and 6-3, over City High

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans’ record improved to 27-6 with a sweep of cross-town rival City High in a two-day doubleheader Monday and Tuesday, July 4 and 5.
The Trojans put on their own fireworks show during an afternoon matinee on Independence Day with the 11-1 pounding of the Little Hawks at home. City put up one run in the top of the third, which was answered with two West High runs in the bottom of the inning. A seven-run barrage from the Trojan bats occurred in the fifth with two more runs in the sixth.

Women of Troy whack the Warriors

IC West beats CR Washington 11-1 in regional semifinal

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy defeated Cedar Rapids Washington 11-1 in a five-inning Class 5A Region 5 semifinal game Saturday, July 9, on the West High diamond.
The win advanced West to a Tuesday, July 12, regional final game against Davenport West in Iowa City with the winner heading for the 2016 state softball championships in Fort Dodge.

OXFORD– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity softball team advanced to a Class 4A Region 5 semifinal game with Oskaloosa after wiping out the Marion Indians, 10-0, in five innings in the quarterfinal round Thursday, July 7, in Oxford.
The Clippers were the visitors in the contest and took full advantage of having the first at-bat with two runs in the top of the first inning, followed by one in the third, four in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Just Tri! Fifth Annual Youth Triathlon Aug. 7 at NLRC

NORTH LIBERTY– Tri-Fit Agape and the North Liberty Aquatic Center will host North Liberty’s annual youth triathlon: Just Tri! on Sunday, Aug. 7. Kids of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to swim, bike and run, with participant awards handed out upon completion. Participants must have a helmet for the bike portion to participate. The event is for participation only; times will not be recorded. Registration is required for the age group the child will be on race day. There is no rain date. The fee is $25 (resident) and $30 (non-resident). The transition opens at 7:15 a.m.

Bluebird house building Aug. 9 at Lake Macbride

SOLON– The public is invited to join Lake Macbride seasonal staff in building bluebird houses. The event on Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 5 until 8 p.m. at Lake Macbride Park’s Main Lodge, is open to people of all ages.

Iowa River kayaking, canoeing trip July 25 in Iowa City

NORTH LIBERTY– Join the North Liberty Recreation Department and Johnson County Conservation for a kayaking and canoeing trip down the Iowa River on Saturday, July 25, starting at 8:30 a.m. Participants will meet at Sturgis Ferry landing in Iowa City, embark on a three-hour float and finish at Hills Landing, roughly nine miles down river. The trip is open to all ages and skill levels. At time of registration, specify if you would like a single kayak, a tandem canoe or if you will provide your own watercraft. Rentals are limited, so sign up early.
