Bluder scores 21 first-half points against Mustangs

SOLON– It’s easier to win when your opponent doesn’t score.
Solon’s varsity boys’ basketball team racked up 16 steals and forced Independence into 29 turnovers in a lopsided 73-39 victory at home to close out 2020 Tuesday, Dec. 22.
The Spartans have rolled up six straight victories since opening the season with a 61-56 loss at Central DeWitt and now sit at 6-1 (4-0 in the WaMaC Conference East Division).

Defensive-minded Lady Spartans end season on high

INDEPENDENCE– The Lady Spartans put an exclamation point on the 2020 portion of this season’s varsity basketball campaign with an 81-22 win over the Independence Mustangs on Tuesday, Dec. 22.
It was the Lady Spartans’ fifth win in a row, providing a 6-2 season record and 6-1 conference record, perching Solon atop the WaMaC East standings followed by Marion (3-4, 3-2), Beckman Catholic (3-5, 3-4), West Delaware (2-5, 1-4), Maquoketa (2-7, 1-5) and Mount Vernon (0-5, 0-5).

Eidahl provides COVID update at school board meeting Parents asked to consider game plan for possible closures

SOLON The Solon Community School District (SCSD) made it past Thanksgiving with no serious surge in COVID-19 cases, but its urging parents to be prepared in early 2021.
Superintendent Davis Eidahl provided an update on the districts response to the pandemic during a Dec. 17 school board meeting.
So (we) really appreciate our families and their efforts with mitigation outside the school day, which were pretty sure had a positive impact on our current data, he noted.

Supervisors make board and commission appointments, but vacancies remain

IOWA CITY The Johnson County Board of Supervisors made several appointments to county boards and commissions during its regular meeting Thursday, Dec. 10, but open seats still remain for volunteers looking to serve their community.
The Compensation Commission, which prepares a compensation (pay) schedule for elected county officers for the succeeding fiscal year, has three openings, which will be advertised for one month by the county. The supervisors appointed Dave Parsons to a one-year term, which starts on Jan. 1, 2021.

After three decades, Kris Brown writes last chapter as director

SOLON Think of the Solon Public Library and you think of Kris Brown.
For decades, the two have been synonymous.
But with the dawn of 2021, Solons longtime library director is calling it a career.
Her last day is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 15, 2021
Even though she turns 70 in May, Brown is leaving reluctantly. Personal health issues have been the deciding factor.
Its just been difficult, especially with COVID, Ive not been able to work with the public for probably the last six months and I dont feel Im contributing enough, she noted.

CCAs Braxton McGrath wins twice for Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG Clear Creek Amanas Braxton McGrath was a double-winner for the Williamsburg Raiders boys swim team in their home invitational meet on Tuesday, Dec. 15. McGrath and Jaxon Strank swim with the Raiders under a program sharing agreement. McGrath took the 100-yard butterfly in 54.07 seconds and won the 100-yard backstroke in 56.71 seconds. Strank took the No. 2 spot in the butterfly in 57.31 seconds.

Traetows 14 points lead CCA in 63-60 win over Williamsburg

TIFFIN Clear Creek Amanas (CCA) varsity girls gave themselves an early Christmas present as they held off a challenge from WaMaC West rival Williamsburg Tuesday, Dec. 22, at home in the final game of 2020. The Clippers pulled out a 63-60 win over the Raiders to improve to 6-1 overall, and a perfect 6-0 to lead the conference.

Swails and Withrow put up 17 points each in CCAs 77-52 win over Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys solidified their top-of-the-WaMaC West standing with a 77-52 win over rival Williamsburg in a WaMaC West showdown Tuesday, Dec. 22, in the Raiders’ gym.
The Clippers found themselves sinking at the end of the first period as the Raiders knocked holes in the “Boats” for a 19-9 lead, but a 25-point effort by CCA in the second gave the boys in blue a 34-27 halftime advantage. The onslaught continued in the third as the Creek Boys pounded in the baskets, outscoring the Raiders 23-14 for a 57-41 lead going into the final quarter.

Liberty falls 56-52 to CR Jefferson with 12 points from Brynlee Slockett

CEDAR RAPIDS– Liberty High’s varsity girls got two games in for the 2020-2021 season before the Christmas break, but were kept on the hunt for their first win after a Tuesday, Dec. 22, trip to Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids, and a battle on the hardwood with the J-Hawks.
Jefferson pulled out a 56-52 win improving to 1-2 while dropping the Lightning to 0-2.

Kelby Telander leads Liberty High with 27 points in 83-66 win over CR Jefferson

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity boys improved to 2-0 on the season with an 83-66 home win over Cedar Rapids Jefferson on Tuesday, Dec. 22.
The Bolts found themselves in a six-point hole down 19-13 at the end of the first period, and were outscored 26-20 in the second period for a 45-33 halftime deficit. A 35-point assault by the Bolts in the third, while holding the J-Hawks to only 10 points, lifted Liberty to a 68-55 advantage going into the final eight minutes.
