Bolt girls get their second win of the season against East High Trojans

McPherson and Napoli lead Liberty in 59-21 win over Waterloo East

WATERLOO– Lightning struck twice as Liberty High’s varsity girls picked up their second win of the 2019-20 season Friday, Jan. 31, on the road at Waterloo East. The Lightning scorched the Trojans 59-21 in the teams’ second meeting this season. The Bolts fried East 66-41 at home on Friday, Dec. 13.
Liberty jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the first quarter and held the Trojans scoreless in the second for a 26-6 halftime score. A 20-point effort by the Lightning in the third, while only allowing five East points, made it 46-11 going into the final period.

Creek Girls scorch the Trojans, 73-18

A dozen Clippers score for CCA against South Tama

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls’ basketball team pounded the winless South Tama Trojans for the second time this season Tuesday, Jan. 28, at home. The Clippers rolled the Trojans, 73-18, with a continuous clock for the second half thanks to a 49-10 halftime lead. Back-to-back three-pointers by junior Whitney Traetow gave the Creek Girls a 45-6 advantage ahead of the halftime break.

35th Annual Legislative Symposium and FFA Day at the Capitol

DES MOINES– Future Farmers of America (FFA) members from across Iowa converged on the Iowa State Capitol, in Des Moines, to build character and promote citizenship, volunteerism and patriotism. Approximately 300 high school students wearing blue corduroy from 51 schools flooded the Iowa State Capitol Building on Jan. 28. The students visited with legislators, exhibited skills learned in the agriculture classroom and learned the importance of citizenship. It was all part of the 35th Annual Iowa FFA Legislative Symposium and FFA Day at the capitol.

NL Community Pantry welcomes Iowa State Senators Wahls and Kinney Feb. 28

NORTH LIBERTY– Iowa State Senators Zach Wahls and Kevin Kinney will visit the North Liberty Community Pantry Friday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m.
The senators will tour the facility and talk with pantry staff about services, the recent increase in pantry traffic, and news surrounding area mobile home residents. Zach Wahls has been a vocal advocate for tenants’ rights, attending and speaking at rallies for Golf View Mobile Home Park last summer.

Beckman cruises over Solon

Blazers build big lead in 63-43 win

SOLON– It was a big hole.
When Carson Shive hit two free throws to open the Solon scoring and tie the game against Beckman Catholic Jan. 31 in Solon, it was as close as the Spartans would get the rest of the night.
Shive hit a three-pointer moments later to make the score 6-5 in Beckman’s favor, but from there out, things didn’t bounce Solon’s way.
Turnovers haunted the Spartans early on and the Blazers built a 16-5 first-quarter lead they would not relinquish.
Beckman held the Spartans to 14 points in the first half and held a commanding 26-point lead heading into the third quarter.

Lady Spartans scalped by Indians, 74-30

SOLON– In the first contest of a three-game week for the Lady Spartans, the visiting Marion Indians ran over Solon’s varsity basketball team, 74-30, on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at the high school. It was the second Solon loss to the Indians this season, the first coming on Jan. 3, 50-18.
Both teams showed considerable improvement from their match-up at the beginning of the month, with Marion ranked No. 2 in Class 4A.

Wrestlers 4th at WaMaC

Taylor, Gnida take titles, Marty 2nd

MANCHESTER– It was a solid showing.
Solon’s varsity wrestlers came in fourth at the 14-team WaMaC Conference Tournament in Manchester Feb. 1.
Hayden Taylor (145 pounds) and Zeb Gnida (152) brought home first-place finishes, with Gage Marty (195) taking runner-up.

E & J Electric pays $126,420 in overtime back wages

U.S. Department of Labor investigation finds violations

SOLON– After an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division (WHD), E & J Electric Inc.– based in Solon, and operating as both E & J Electric Inc. and E & J Geothermal Inc.– paid $126,420 in back wages to 25 current and former employees for violating the overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

DNR closes roads at Hawkeye Wildlife Area

OXFORD– Roads on the south side of the Hawkeye Wildlife Area have been closed to vehicle traffic for the remainder of this winter and into early spring to minimize rutting and other damage caused when thawing and melting occurs.
“Road repairs are very expensive and eliminating driving during these periods helps reduce time and material to reestablish good driving conditions,” said Steve Woodruff, wildlife biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. “Roadways will be reopened when roads are in favorable conditions.”

Solon Robotics teams advance

SOLON– Two Solon Robotics First Tech Challenge teams have advanced to a postseason Super Qualifier on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Regina in Iowa City. Team 367, Jedi Pugs, and team 15055, 501st Legion, qualified at the league tournament in Ottumwa late last month.
The Jedi Pugs were captains of the tournament champions alliance while the 501st Legion were on the second-place finalist alliance of teams. Jedi Pugs also received the Control Award for excellence in the autonomous programming portion of the competition.
