Women Hawks take Drake

Both the men’s and women’s basketball team traveled to Drake last Saturday with hopes of bringing home the mythical state championship.
The women won the crown, the men fell short.
The women opened up the day with an 11 a.m. start at the Knapp Center.
Drake came out fast and jumped to a 9-2 lead, but the Hawkeyes stepped up their defense, ran their offense and outscored the Bulldogs 35-12 to take a 37-21 halftime lead and coasted to a 71-53 win.

Hop aboard, Frog Hollow is jumping

NORTH LIBERTY– For staff at Frog Hollow preschool and daycare center, providing good care for kids is one big balancing act.
Owner Alan Arzu and center director Vickie Bradenburg are good with that. They both agree that a good preschool program offers a balance between safety and independence, structured activities and free play, organization and spontaneity.
Now, North Liberty’s newest daycare center is balancing out the city’s need for additional childcare programs since opening its doors in August.

Heroes on the fairway

JOHNSON COUNTY– Fifteen years ago, Eldon Miller of Kalona didn’t find enough opportunities for people like himself to participate in sports competitions.
Miller is a veteran, and he is blind.
An avid downhill skier, Miller had been to Colorado to join in that state’s winter games for veterans, but found nothing similar when he returned home to Iowa.
Miller and another blind veteran approached staff at the Veterans Affairs (V.A.) Medical Center in Iowa City.
“We wanted to find something blind people could do,” Miller said. “We can’t really play basketball very easily.”
