CCA Voters go to the polls February 3

OXFORD — Should the Clear Creek Amana School District (CCA) continue to spend money from a one-cent sales tax? Voters will decide in a Feb. 3 special election.
Voters approved a Revenue Purpose Statement in 2007 authorizing the district to use funds raised from a one-cent sales tax for infrastructure improvements throughout the district.

DES MOINES– On Monday morning, January 12th, I was sworn in as your State Representative for the next two years. I am deeply grateful to have this opportunity to serve, and I am humbled by the challenges currently facing Iowa and the new General Assembly. In this space, over the next two years, I will attempt to update you as to my activities as your State Representative, my legislative goals, and the week-to-week developments in the Iowa Legislature and State Government.


North Central Jr. High Knights go undefeated

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Central Knights eighth-grade boys basketball team completed the season with a 9-0 record. They were also undefeated as seventh-graders so they completed junior high with an overall record of 18-0.


Iowa Wrestlers beat Oklahoma State

IOWA CITY– Nine straight losses to the Cowboys doesn’t sound right so the Hawkeyes, wrestling without two starters, won six matches and righted the wrong with a 20-13 win over the Cowboys.
I don’t know if head coach Tom Brands will be happy with four matches decided by less than three points but there is still time to improve.
I suppose you have to give Oklahoma State a little credit for keeping it close.
They used a smaller mat, which Mark Ironside (radio color man for Iowa) called a “junior high mat”.


VanderPol's career cut short

IOWA CITY– There has been some sad news from the women’s basketball team, as Nicole VanderPol is calling it a career.
The 6-2 senior has been fighting injuries for most of her time at Iowa and the latest, poor circulation in her leg which gives her numbness, has made her decision to finish the season on the bench supporting her teammates.
I talked to her at the hospital when the women’s basketball team visited the children and she said she was done playing.


Hawkeye women win two

IOWA CITY– Sunday was a great day for the Hawkeyes to open up the offense, make a close game a blowout and win their 11th game of the season, third in a row, against Northwestern, 74-46.
You have to start with Kachine Alexander. If she doesn’t get some all-conference votes I want a recount.
The 5-9 junior had the first triple-double in eight years (all Big Ten Cara Consuegra was the last one in 2001) scoring 10 points, with 11 rebounds and 12 assists.


Purdue Rolls Over Iowa

IOWA CITY– For the second week in a row, the Hawkeye men played a Big Ten game on Sunday morning and for the second Sunday in a row the Hawkeyes got smoked, this time by Purdue, 75-53.
The Boilermakers were picked to have one of the top teams in the Big Ten and they proved it with great outside shooting (10-15 from 3-point), great passing (19 assists) and tough defense (19 turnovers for Iowa).
One of the only bright spots was the play of seldom-used big man David Palmer.


Ginny “GiGi” York

Ginny “GiGi” York, 51, died unexpectedly but peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009 at her home. A luncheon to celebrate Ginny’s life was held Tuesday, Jan. 13 at Ms. Susan’s Catering, 1215 Jordan Street in North Liberty. Memorial contributions may be directed to The Iowa City Animal Shelter. Lensing Funeral and Cremation Services, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, is handling the arrangements.


Bonnie R. Williams

Bonnie R. Williams, 73, of Marion, died Jan. 13, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City after a short illness. Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 16, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids. Visitation was held Jan. 15 at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids. Private inurnment was at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Meditation Wall.


Carol M. Strank

Carol M. Strank, 62, of 3161 Sandy Beach Rd. NE, Solon, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a lengthy illness.
Funeral Services are pending at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service,
Iowa City.
