Kirkwood to host Children's Miracle Dance Marathon

IOWA CITY– Each year, nearly 80 American schools participate in Dance Marathon across the country in support of the Children’s Miracle Network. Now the Kirkwood Community College Iowa City Campus is getting in on the fun and the fund-raising.
“The community gives so much to the college in terms of support. To show our appreciation we like to give back in turn. Joint Communications Center receives second grant

IOWA CITY– The announcement of a second grant award for the new Johnson County Joint Communications Center in Iowa City should help to ease the construction costs of the new building and county wide interoperable communications system.
In November 2008, the Johnson County Emergency Management Agency was awarded $1,927,882 from the federal Public Safety Interoperable Communications Grant.
Funding from this grant will be used toward the new countywide joint emergency communications center and interoperable radio system.

Crime and reason

NORTH LIBERTY — The news was shocking: five robberies in six months, an attempted sexual assault, and a purse snatching in a store parking lot.
For some, it may have seemed the end of small town innocence. For North Liberty Police Chief Jim Warkentin, it’s a symptom of the growing pains common to a rapidly expanding community.
“We’re no longer a small-town agency,” Chief Warkentin said in a mid-December interview with The Leader.
In 2008, the NLPD responded to 12,729 calls for service, a 46 percent increase over 2007. The department filed 571 charges with 455 arrests.

Johnson County to phase out the phasing?

JOHNSON COUNTY– It’s just a guideline, really.
However, proposed changes to the North Corridor portion of the Johnson County Land Use Plan could impact a significant number of rural property owners, if they wish to develop land in the future.
