Older Americans Honored in May

JOHNSON COUNTY—Through the work of dedicated volunteers, older Americans in Johnson County can depend on the advice and assistance they need as they navigate the road to a safe, comfortable retirement.
May has been designated Older Americans Month and the staff of The Johnson County Livable Community for Successful Aging is ready. Activities are planned to honor older Americans, along with plans to launch a new website that will offer a comprehensive package of information valuable to seniors.

North Liberty Police Department Releases Seat Belt Survey Findings

NORTH LIBERTY — As participants in the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, the North Liberty Police Department conducted a survey of seat belt use by motorists in North Liberty in early March 2009. The national average of seat belt use in 2007 was 83% while the Iowa usage rate in 2008 was 93%. North Liberty motorists currently use seat belts at a rate of 93.2% which falls in line with the rest of Iowa and well above the most recently published national data.

Technology boost for CCA

OXFORD — Three years ago, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district entered a lease-purchase agreement with Apple Computers. With the current lease paid, and, encouraged by their performance, the school board approved a new lease-purchase agreement during the regular monthly meeting in March.

Simplicity and service

TIFFIN — The desire for something better: it’s what led Nicolle and Rob Folkers into owning their own business. It’s also what they hope leads customers to their door.
Simply Floors, the business venture started by the Folkers, has been open since April 2008 and is located in an industrial park on the south edge of Tiffin. Nicolle said she grew up in the business, working for her Dad by installing flooring. Rob spent approximately 10 years in the flooring industry, and also spent his fair share of time on his hands and knees installing products.

Yes For All PAC supports Local Option Sales Tax

JOHNSON COUNTY– In just a few days, all Johnson County voters will go to the polls to decide on a four-year, one-cent Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) referendum.
Hinged upon the outcome are the fates of several flood mitigation projects that can’t be built too soon for some.
In February, legislation allowed for counties in Iowa designated as disaster areas in 2008– and not already imposing such a tax– to hold a LOST election. Each jurisdiction filed a statement outlining specifically how the money would be spent.

Spring Football Part Two

IOWA CITY– This is the second of a three-part series on spring football.
Last week I looked at the skill positions on offense: quarterback, running backs and receivers.
This week I’ll look at the offensive and defensive lines.
The Hawkeyes need to replace two All-Big Ten players on the offense and defensive lines in order to have a successful season.
Starting on the offense, gone are all-conference picks Seth Olsen and Rob Bruggeman.
Seth was one of those versatile linemen that could play guard or tackle. He played both from his freshman year to his junior season.

Food for Thought

History is about people. It’s about you and me and the things we do, both as individuals and as a community. The Solon History Group has been making strides – well, maybe baby steps – toward assuring that the unique stories of our community are not forgotten. Solon and other Johnson County towns played important roles in the settlement and development of this part of the state. Its population has its own character, its history is an intriguing story, its place in the annals of the county and the state are essential parts of Iowa’s picture.

Walkin'

As a mailman I got to know many a dog. There were a couple of Dobermans, for example, which camped out behind the door with the mail slot. With my first footfall on their property they would go into a snarling frenzy, sticking their narrow snouts out the slot while snapping their teeth like investment bankers anticipating a government handout. Holding the mail gingerly from one end, I’d feed it to the canines one piece at a time. Just audible among the snorts and growls, I could hear the day’s mail being torn to shreds.
