NL Council approves 09-10 salaries

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council has approved city staff salaries for the upcoming fiscal year.
For the year beginning July 1, 2009, and ending June 30, 2010, the city’s overall salary budget is $4.776 million, a total that includes employee’s contractual benefits such as health insurance, paid vacation and sick leave.
In March, the council voted to give city employees across the board a 2 percent cost of living wage increase, and instituted a freeze on merit pay for the new fiscal year.


County agrees to proceed with inspection of Sutliff Bridge

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Board of Supervisors took another step in deciding the fate of the historic Sutliff Bridge last Thursday.
At their informal meeting on July 2, the supervisors unofficially agreed to enter into contract with VJ Engineering of Iowa City to conduct an inspection and feasibility study on the bridge, part of which was destroyed by flooding in June 2008.
County Engineer Greg Parker said just two firms responded to a committee’s Request for Qualifications (RFQ) sent to consultants.


Deadline for ICCSD election July 30

IOWA CITY– The residents of the Iowa City Community School District will elect three directors in the school election, which will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009.
Any person who is a citizen of the United States, 18 years of age or older, and a resident of the school district may become a candidate for the school board.


Free honeybee program to be held July 18

SOLON– Beekeeper and state park manager Ron Puettmann will be holding this year’s second honeybee program near Lake Macbride State Park primitive campground on Saturday, July 18 at 1:00 p.m. This interpretive series on honeybees and beekeeping offers participants the opportunity to examine the inside of a real beehive from the security of screened tents located next to the hive.


Darryl Moore, one great story

IOWA CITY– Darryl Moore is one of the great stories of Hawkeye basketball.
He was playing a pickup game in the Iowa Fieldhouse when assistant coach Rick Moss spotted him in action.
“He was over there playing with some of the guys and we ended up playing against him and he liked the way I played so he said, ‘you should try out,’” Darryl remembered.
Coach Moss told Head Coach Tom Davis and Darryl was invited to walk on.
Darryl made the “Gray team” and red-shirted his first year, 1993-94. His next two years he played in three games in each season.


Food for Thought

Our imaginary trip to Egypt took my summertime art students and me to our basement for a part of the session. A rainy day prevented us from enjoying the outdoors while we learned about Egyptian art. The basement was gloomy and windowless – perfect for setting the mood for painting the walls of a tomb. Since our “cave” had pretty much consumed all the available cardboard boxes, I “borrowed” a couple nice panels of plywood from my husband and allotted each child enough space to tell a story, comic strip fashion.


Walkin'

Last weekend, Sabra and I rode our bicycles on the Cedar Valley Nature Trail (CVNT).
We started at the southeastern trailhead in Hiawatha, just north of Cedar Rapids, and finished at an Econolodge between Waterloo and Cedar Falls.
The CVNT is a rails-to-trails, meaning it was an abandoned railway that has been converted into a trail. There’s many more around the country.
