Debra A. (Cook) VanLierop

Debra A. (Cook) VanLierop, 51, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2009, in North Liberty. A memorial service to celebrate her life was held Friday in Washington state. For more information please e-mail Haley at h-kaperick@hotmail.com.
Debbie was born in Tacoma, Wash., on July 29, 1957.
She is survived by her sister, Sandra Carl; brother, Larry Cook; children Haley and Andrew Kaperick; and many friends and relatives in Iowa and Washington.
Though Debbie was taken from us too early, we will never forget her generous, loving, spontaneous spirit.


Margaret Ann Roskup

Margaret Ann Roskup, was born Feb. 4, 1954, in Iowa City, a daughter of Wesley and Bernice K. (Donohoe) Albrecht. She graduated from Iowa City West High School in 1973. On April 8, 1978, she was united in marriage to Edward Roskup at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City. They lived in Iowa City until 1999, when they moved to Wellman. Margaret worked for Parkview Manor as a housekeeper. She was a member of the Catholic Church and enjoyed knitting and crocheting.


Robert L. “Bob” Nelson

Robert L. “Bob” Nelson, 61, of North Liberty died Sunday, July 26, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 1 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial with Military Honors was held at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Bob’s memory. Violet A. Miller

Violet A. Miller, 97, of Davenport and formerly of Centerville and Ely passed away on Monday, July 13, 2009, at the home of her daughter in Davenport.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 16, 2009, at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf by the Rev. Christian H. Meyer. Burial was in Davenport Memorial Park in Davenport.
For many years, Violet owned and operated a beauty shop in Ely before moving to Davenport several years ago. She spent many enjoyable hours sewing, quilting, and crocheting and treasured times spent with her beloved family.


Bonnie Bagby Kelley

Bonnie Bagby Kelley, 51, died Friday, July 24, 2009, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo after a lengthy illness. Services were held Tuesday at Triumphant Christian Center in Independence. Burial was at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, south of Winthrop. Visitation was held at Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop on Monday.


Jane A. Hanrahan

Jane A. Hanrahan, 84, of Iowa City, died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Mercy Hospice Care in Iowa City with her family at her side.
Jane was born Feb. 2, 1925, in Iowa City, the daughter of Leo and Helen Patterson Beasley. She graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in 1944 and married Joseph “Joe” Hanrahan on Nov. 12, 1951, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City.
Jane worked as a nurse’s aide at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City for 24 years, retiring in 1990.

Inez Marie Franck, 84, died peacefully Saturday, July 25, 2009, in Independence. She had been in failing health for several months.

Kenneth Dean Cabbage, 67, of North Liberty, died Monday, July 27, 2009.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at the Solon United Methodist Church in Solon, Iowa. Visitation was prior to the service at the church. Graveside services were held Saturday at the Griffis Cemetery near Prairie City, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Dean’s memory to the Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and Heifer International. Food for Thought

Here it is, August already! And we're thinking about school supplies, Labor Day and the State Fair. I suppose I could come up with several perfectly acceptable reasons (or excuses) why I've attended the Iowa State Fair a mere half dozen times during my fairly long lifetime, but that doesn't mean I've been unaware of it or that I don't value it as an important Iowa tradition. Let's just say that I've always been an observer, not a participant, and I think not being personally involved makes attendance seem less important.


Hawkeye football, part deux

IOWA CITY– This is the second part of Iowa’s football schedule. Last week I looked at the first six games: UNI, at Iowa State, Arizona, at Penn State, Arkansas State, and Michigan.
I predicted Iowa would be favored in every game except Penn State.
This week I’ll look at the second half schedule, which includes home games with Indiana, Northwestern and Minnesota plus road trips to Wisconsin, Michigan State and Ohio State.
