Hawk Women Will Be NCAA Host

IOWA CITY– By winning their final two games of the regular season last week, the Hawkeyes assured themselves of being the host team for the NCAA tournament March 22-24 at Carver.
The Hawkeyes finished with the same record they had last year, 20-9 (13-5 in the Big Ten). They were co-Big Ten Champs last season, but this year they tied for second place with Purdue and Michigan State.
It was Senior Night for the Hawkeye women last Thursday.
Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said at her press conference if things work out all five seniors, including Nicole VanderPol, would be on the court one last time.


Hawks play hard, despite loss

IOWA CITY– I didn’t have a good feeling when the Hawkeye men traveled to East Lansing last Wednesday.
They haven’t won there since Matt Gatens was 5. Last year, the Spartans jumped out to a 20-1 lead and coasted to a 66-52 win.
Iowa did have one of the great upsets of the year when they beat Michigan State, 43-36, in Iowa City last season.
I was just hoping the Hawks wouldn’t lose by 20.
They didn’t, and the 62-54 loss was played hard from start to finish.
Every time Iowa would make a run, the Spartans would answer.

Kimberly Jean Stoneking, 50, of Ely, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, in her home following a short illness. Private family services will be held at a later date. Papich-Kuba Funeral Service, Cedar Rapids, is serving the family.


Bessie Mabel Sedlacek

Bessie Mabel Sedlacek, 108, a short-time resident of the Solon Care Center and formerly of Silver Pines Assisted Living & Retirement Community, Cedar Rapids, died there Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, after a sudden illness. Services were held Saturday, Feb. 28 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with the Rev. Sonda Kirsteatter of Olivet Presbyterian Church officiating. Visitation was held Feb. 27 at the funeral home. Burial was in Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Debra (Mrs. David) McGowan, 54, of rural Gladbrook, died early Tuesday morning, Feb. 24, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a brief illness.

Joan J. Harper, 86, of West Ridge Care Center, died there Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, after a short illness. Services were held Friday, Feb. 27, at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, by the Rev. Fred Darbonne of First Christian Church. Interment was in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation was held Friday an hour before the service.
Survivors include her children, Barbara (Loren) Cohen and Susan Harper, both of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jeff Harper of Swisher and David Harper of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.


Richard L. Frantz

Richard L. Frantz, 66, of Iowa City, died peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, surrounded by his loving family, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following an extended illness. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in rural Hills. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Regina Education Center. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City, is handling the arrangements.

Leah Dee Sickels Fleagle, 49, of Cedar Rapids, died unexpectedly in her home on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009. A celebration of her life was held Thursday, Feb. 26, at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon, by the Rev. Thomas Mattson.

Bernice “Jean” Fank, 74, of Winthrop, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, in the University Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, following a short illness. Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 24, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Winthrop, with the Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Visitation was Feb. 23, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Winthrop.


Raymond J. Brannaman

Raymond J. Brannaman, 91, Sutliff, passed away Thursday, February 26, 2009, at Hallmark Care Center in Mount Vernon from a brief illness. Memorial services were held Monday, March 2, at Brosh Chapel in Solon with Rev. Mark Gefaller. Full military rites will be conducted by the Solon American Legion Stinocher Post 460. Visitation was Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Solon. As per Ray’s wishes he continues the gift of life with the University of Iowa College of Medicine and University Hospital and Clinics.
