Find your inner artist over spring break

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art and The Shop Next Door is hosting an art camp for local students. Choose from two identical weeks: March 16-18 or March 23-25. The camp is open for kids ages 6-12 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and ages 13+ from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Call The Shop Next Door at (319) 363-3177 or email Heather at Heather@BrewedAwakeningsCR.com for more information.

NORTH LIBERTY– South Slope and Swisher Telephone are excited to announce its support for the netINS 2010 College Scholarship Program. The aim of the annual program is to help further higher education opportunities among high school students. South Slope and Swisher Telephone strongly supports the youth of our communities and are eager to support yet another valuable program.

Solon reaches semifinal

DES MOINES– The Solon Spartans let a 14-point lead escape them, but hung on for a 50-46 defeat of Mid-Prairie in the opening round of the 2A state basketball tournament Tuesday (Mar. 9).
Senior guard Hale Rickels and junior forward Jesse Carson sparked the Solon squad with 14 points each. The Spartans shot 50 percent from beyond the arc and forced the Golden Hawks into 17 turnovers, but Mid-Prairie won the battle of the boards and shot better overall from the field.


Heading for Des Moines on Highway 2A

BETTENDORF– “It was a great week for a great group of kids,” observed Head Coach Brad Randall.
The Solon Spartan basketball team took control of the district title game against North Cedar 70-56, and then plowed under Danville, 61-32, last week on its way to a third-straight Class 2A state tournament appearance.
The Spartans will now face long-time rival Mid-Prairie in a first round game Tuesday, March 9, at 1:45 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
In December, it was Mid-Prairie that broke Solon’s winning streak and handed the Spartans their first of two losses this season.

Jerome “Jerry” Charles Linderbaum

Jerome “Jerry” Charles Linderbaum, 63 of Solon, died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at the Solon Nursing Care Center after a lengthy battle with Alzheimers. Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2010 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where there will be a 5 p.m. vigil. Private family inurnment will be at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Solon American Legion. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.

Swisher Community Library officially opens

SWISHER — On a summer’s evening about eight years ago, a young man named Tobin Hoover approached people at an outdoor movie with a petition and an idea. He wanted to see a library in Swisher.
Tobin finally saw his wish come true on a recent chilly winter morning as the Swisher Community Library officially celebrated its opening in the former Swisher Telephone Company building, on Feb. 6, with a ribbon cutting ceremony.


Supervisors OK pursuing agreement for 120th St. improvements

IOWA CITY — An improved 120th Street through Shueyville is one mile closer to reality, but don’t consider the project shovel-ready just yet.
During a Feb. 17 key issues work session, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors directed Executive Assistant Andy Johnson to continue discussion and pursue an agreement with the city of Shueyville to fund the work.


North Liberty asks for more time on annexation

NORTH LIBERTY– Competing annexation applications between North Liberty and Coralville– now more than three years old– remain on hold, this time at the official request of both cities.

Dennis J. Zelezny, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died early Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. Funeral Mass was Monday, March 1, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church by Father Christopher Podhajsky. Burial followed at St. John’s Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday, Feb. 28, at Papich-Kuba Janeba Chapel West, Cedar Rapids. Military honors were conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 788.


Leland John Wise Sr.

Leland John Wise Sr., 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, surrounded by his family at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Services were Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids, with Father Mark Reasoner officiating. Visitation was Monday, Feb. 22, and Tuesday at the funeral home. Private interment was at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
