NL council gives unofficial approval to FY 11 budget

NORTH LIBERTY– While minimizing a proposed tax levy increase and avoiding deep cuts to anticipated expenses, the North Liberty City Council managed to agree on a 2010-11 budget that seemed to satisfy everyone at the table.
Last Tuesday, Feb. 16, during its second budget work session, the council settled on a property tax levy of $11.20 per $1,000 of taxable valuation, a decrease of 35 cents from the levy proposed two weeks ago.

Hawkeye wrestlers finish undefeated

IOWA CITY– The Iowa wrestlers went out in style, winning their third-straight Big Ten title, their 61st consecutive win and finished 23-0 by crunching Ohio State and Wisconsin.
Last Friday at Carver, the Hawkeye seniors went out with class in a 32-3 win over third-ranked Ohio State.
That’s the 18th time the Hawkeyes have been undefeated at home. They also set a Carver record with 11 home wins.

Hawk women have big win, tough loss

IOWA CITY– Hayden Fry said that “the sun don’t shine on the same dog every day.”
Well, the sun did shine last Thursday at Carver for Iowa, but didn’t come out last Sunday at Northwestern.
A first half explosion and the Hawkeye women have their 15th victory of the season last week against Minnesota.
Iowa came out with 50 points at half last Thursday and paid back the Gophers, 75-54.
The Hawks lost earlier in the year in overtime at Minnesota, 72-69.

Food for Thought

It seems I've made more than my share of trips to town this winter, what with meetings, doctor appointments, grocery shopping and picking up those prescriptions. Snow and ice have forced me to keep my eyes pretty much glued to the road, so I haven't paid much attention to the scenery. What's to look at, anyway, except more snow and ice? A few days ago, though, I was driving between Solon and Iowa City on Highway 1, in no particular hurry and enjoying the sunshine for a change, which had me feeling almost spring-like. I didn't like what I saw.
