Women of Troy a step closer to the big dance

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy swept the Rough Riders of Des Moines Roosevelt 3-0 Thursday night (Oct. 27) in a Class 4A regional semifinal match on their home court.
West took the night 26-24, 25-17 and 25-15.


West pounds Wahlert

IOWA CITY– Some call it “the second season.” Officially, it is “the Football Postseason Tournament.” Call it what you will, the bottom line is the same.
It’s do or die time.
Brian Sauser’s West High Trojans survived Wednesday night’s (Oct. 26) first round encounter with Dubuque Wahlert at home, picking up the team’s first postseason win in several years, 66-32.
The Trojans took the kickoff from Wahlert and scored on a Charles Rogers 44 yard keeper with 8:40 left in the first quarter. Alex Troester’s point-after-touchdown (PAT) kick was good, and West had the early 7-0 lead.


NLFD hot at 2011 Fire Bowl

NORTH LIBERTY– On Oct. 9, North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD) members participated in the second annual Cedar Rapids Fire Department “Fire Bowl” charity flag football game held at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.  This year’s event was established to raise money for the Make a Wish Foundation.  The event is hosted by the Cedar Rapids Fire Department and this year’s event raised over $10,000 for the foundation.


‘Scapino’ hits Mount Mercy stage Nov. 12

CEDAR RAPIDS– Mount Mercy University will present “Scapino,” a comedy by Frank Dunlop and Jim Dale, from Nov. 10–12 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 13 at 1:30 p.m. at the McAuley Theater.
Cast members include Danny Wayson, a freshman from North Liberty, who plays the role of Carlo.


Lake Macbride undergoes minor construction

Construction equipment sits where the Lake Macbride Boat Rental and concession building used to be. To avoid future flooding, the building is being moved up the hill, closer to the beach lodge in the park. In the meantime, soil stabilization structures are being established on the slope to minimize sediment running into the shallow bay.  On the south side of the park, a sediment pond is being constructed south and west of the causeway; again to reduce runoff into the lake.


Heritage Agency sponsors caregiver wellness day

MARION– The Heritage Area Agency on Aging will host “A Celebration of Caregivers,” on Friday, Nov. 18, at 8:30 a.m. at the Kirkwood Training and Outreach Services Center, 3375 Armar Dr., in Marion.
This free event will help informal caregivers of older adults focus on their own health and well-being, through a keynote address and breakout sessions on holiday stresses, alternative therapies and options for levels of care. The nearby Village Ridge Assisted Living will offer free respite care, giving caregivers a break to enjoy the day.


North Bend PTG hosts annual Elf Shop vendor fair, bake sale Nov. 19

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Bend Elementary Parent-Teacher Group (PTG) is hosting its Annual Elf Shop Vendor Fair and Bake Sale winter fundraiser Saturday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at North Bend Elementary School, 2230 St. Andrews Dr., North Liberty.
The fundraiser will feature over 20 vendors, a bake sale, spirit sale, cookie decorating, hot cocoa and a movie playing for children.


Order poinsettias at library through Nov. 18

NORTH LIBERTY– The Friends of the North Liberty Community Library are taking orders through Nov. 18 for poinsettias for the holidays. Cost is $13 per plant for red, white or jingle bell. All orders must be prepaid.

Swisher Legion host Vets service Nov. 6

SWISHER– The Johnson County American Legion will host a Veterans Day service at the Anderson Cemetery on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. The guest speaker will be Jeff Bell, a member of the Swisher American Legion. In case of inclement weather, services will be held at Swisher American Legion hall.  The public is invited to attend.


A few more gathered in His name

NORTH LIBERTY– They gathered in an early morning mist, heads bowed, hand-in-hand.
They also laughed really loudly, scooped up sugared donuts and jostled each other like the boisterous teenagers they were.
And together, they prayed.
It’s not uncommon for Heritage Christian School (HCS) students to gather in prayer; it’s part of the school routine. It is less common to see students in a public school setting engaging in prayer, though that’s what happened before school on Sept. 28.
