Jerry Starbuck

Jerry Thomas Starbuck, 79, of Solon, died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, at Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center after a long illness. Jerry’s funeral was celebrated Oct. 14, with military honors, at Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Jerry Starbuck memorial fund. A grove of trees will be planted in his memory at F.W. Kent Park.


Evelyna Kron

Evelyna Kron, 88, of Hills, died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at St. Joseph’s Church in Hills with Father Bill Kneemiller officiating. Burial will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, where the National Catholic Order of Foresters will recite a rosary at 6:45 p.m., and a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund had been established.


Donald Coulon

Donald Michael Coulon, 73, died Aug. 17, 2011, in Hood River, Ore., after suffering from dementia for several years. A memorial for Don was held Oct. 14 at the First Presbyterian Church in Marengo, with the Rev. Gerald Rife officiating. Inurnment was in the Marengo Cemetery. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is assisting with arrangements.


Leota Connor

Leota C. Connor, 98, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.
Private family services were held on Oct. 15. Burial was in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, West Liberty. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice or the Simpson Memorial Home.


Irenus Baumler

Irenus J. Baumler, 75, of Waukon, died Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Oct. 17 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. Burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.
Survivors include his children, Kenneth Baumler of Waukon, Sharon Baumler of North Liberty and Allan (special friend Jennifer Gehrum) Baumler of Dyersville.

Food For Thought

My children grew up quite a few years ago, and looking back, I realize that I didn’t exactly suffer from the so-called empty nest syndrome. For the most part, I had plenty of other uses for those vacated bedrooms. The first priority was to refurbish and furnish an inviting, comfortable guest room so that guests no longer had to suffer on the fold-out sofa or fold themselves into the extra bunk-bed in my son’s cluttered room.

Halloween Party Oct. 27

Spooky and exciting times are coming to the library on Thursday evening, Oct. 27, at 6:30 p.m. with the annual Halloween party. Be ready for some craft projects, some trick or treating and refreshments in the meeting room. Ms. Jen will be there in costume. Try to find her in the crowd.
