Leaf pickup continues for Solon; no yard waste

SOLON– From Monday, Oct. 3, through Wednesday, Dec. 5, the City of Solon will perform its annual fall leaf pickup service. This is a free service provided to the residents of the City of Solon. Leaves will be collected once per week beginning on Mondays. Depending on the amount of leaves to be collected and other workloads, some properties may not have leaves picked up until Tuesday or Wednesday of any week. As a reminder, residents are asked to rake the leaves into a pile or piles or to windrow them behind the curb, but not into the street or gutter.

The biggest number might be 12.
“We have 12 healthy players right now,” said coach Bluder. “I don’t know the last time we’ve been able to say that.”
You start at the point. Senior Kamille Wahlin (5-8) is not only steady, she has one of the best 12-foot jump shots in the Big Ten, is a great passer and leader on the team.

There were at least three things I wanted to see Saturday during Iowa’s homecoming game with Indiana.
1. Score over 40 points
2. Get the tight ends involved.
3. Get the starters out in the fourth quarter and play some reserves.
4. Okay, I know I said three, but also I wanted to see if A.J. Derby would see the field at linebacker as was reported all week.
Iowa did score 45 points in their 45-24 victory.
The tight ends only caught three passes, two by Zach Derby and one by Brad Herman but Brad’s catch was for a touchdown, the first of his career.


Bernice Worden

Bernice Worden, 91, of Iowa City, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, at the Lone Tree Care Center.
Funeral services were held Oct. 17 at Gay & Ciha Funeral Service in Iowa City. Entombment followed the services at Memory Gardens Mausoleum. A memorial fund has been established in Bernice’s name. Online condolences may be sent to her family through the web at www.gayandcihacom.


Genevieve Reiland

Genevieve M. “Ginger” Reiland, 86, of Iowa City died peacefully Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, at East Towne Care Center in Independence.
Funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 18 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Phillips officiating. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.


Mackenzie Lown

Mackenzie Lynn Lown, 14, of Amana, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Funeral services for Mackenzie were held Oct. 22 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fairfax, with Father Dustin Vu officiating. Burial was at Hala Cemetery. Friends are welcome to join the family in a celebration of life for Mackenzie on Sunday, Oct. 30, from 12 to 4 p.m. at Bella Sala, 3232 Jasper Ave., Tiffin.


Sheri Kay (Jansa) Koss

Sheri Kay (Jansa) Koss, 64, of North Liberty, died suddenly Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, at her home. A memorial service was held Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids. Inurnment followed at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Sheri was born on Dec. 13, 1946, in Cedar Rapids to Ernest and Alma (Smahel) Jansa. She graduated from Prairie High School in 1965. She married the love of her life, Donald Koss, on June 24, 1971, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon. They enjoyed 40 beautiful years together. She was the best nana for her two (love of her life) granddaughters, Rachel and Erin Taber.


James Kepler

James K. Kepler, 58, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Lisbon, died Oct. 19, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Jim’s funeral was Oct. 22 at Morgan Funeral Choices, Mount Vernon. Jim’s cremated remains will be scattered at a later date.
Locally surviving Jim is a son, Eirik of Swisher.
Jim was born Oct. 2, 1953, in Iowa City, and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1972. He joined Carpenters Union Local 308, Cedar Rapids, until his retirement in 2011. Jim was an EMT and member of the Mechanicsville Fire and Ambulance Volunteers.


Russell Allen Gerdin

Russell Allen Gerdin, 70, passed peacefully with family at his side on Oct. 14, 2011, at his home in North Liberty after years of battling health issues.
Russ was born on Sept. 4, 1941, son of Wilford and Adah (Pike) Gerdin in Princeton, Minn. He attended elementary and high school in Princeton and entered the U.S. Coast Guard upon graduating. He later attended Moorhead State University in Moorhead, Minn., and graduated with a business degree in 1965.
