Sections of Dubuque Street trail closed for repairs

NORTH LIBERTY– Parts of the Dubuque Street trail were closed starting Monday, Oct. 31, in order to replace multiple panels. As these sections are holding water, it is best to replace them as soon as possible rather than waiting for winter when areas may freeze and crack. Portions of the trail will be closed until the project is complete, anticipated for Monday, Nov. 14. As always, the end date is contingent on weather. Users of the trail should use caution during the repairs.
For additional information contact the City of North Liberty at 626-5700.

NL Vets Day Dinner moved to Nov. 15

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty American Legion Auxiliary’s annual Veterans Day dinner has been moved to Tuesday, Nov. 15, at South Slope’s community room.
The change has been made due to a USO show planned at Riverside Casino on Nov. 11.
Registration for the Veterans Day event begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and a program. The program will feature a Power Point presentation and combat footage presented by a local Iowa veteran who recently returned from duty in Afghanistan.

ICCSD class sizes creep upward

IOWA CITY– Although the state’s budget of zero-percent allowable growth has constrained staff hiring, student numbers continue to rise in the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD), according to the early projections of assistant superintendent Ann Feldman.
Feldman reported her findings at an Oct. 25 session of the ICCSD board of education.
At the elementary schools, Feldman counted 291.5 staff members, but, she said “that’s homeroom teachers; there are a lot of other teachers, librarians, counselors, and instructional coaches” also on the payroll.

Constructive ideas, positive campaigns

NORTH LIBERTY– The four people hoping to secure one of three open seats on the North Liberty City Council came together last Wednesday, Oct. 26, to share their positions on city business.
The League of Women Voters of Johnson County hosted the Council Candidate Forum for North Liberty candidates. The event, moderated by Iowa City Attorney and current North Liberty Board of Adjustment member Allison Werner Smith, was sparsely attended, with just six people in the audience, including current council members, the mayor and two candidates’ wives.

Spartans taken out by Knights

SOLON– There will be no fifth consecutive championship for Solon.
The sixth-ranked Spartans lost to Union of LaPorte City 39-24 in a second-round football playoff game Monday night in Solon.
The Spartan defense, stalwart all season, could not stop the Knights and their senior running back Wes Burnside.
Burnside carried the ball over 30 times for almost 200 yards against Solon.
The defending 3A champions fell into a 19-7 hole in the first half and Union scored on its first two possessions in the third quarter to put the game just out of reach for Solon.

Spartans give CPU nowhere to go

SOLON– The Stormin’ Pointers were no match for the Spartan defense.
Playing in the first round of the Class 3A postseason football tournament, Solon smothered Center Point-Urbana (CPU) 44-0 Wednesday to advance against a more formidable opponent, 8-2 Union of LaPorte City, Monday night (Oct. 31).
The Spartans limited CPU to just 39 yards of total offense, all of them on the ground. A lone Stormin’ Pointer completion went for no yardage. In fact, CPU quarterback Ryan Wilkin completed two more passes to Solon’s Andy Klouda.

Cardiac Kids

SOLON– If you weren’t there, you missed a thriller.
The Solon Lady Spartans were hosting an opening round postseason game Monday, Oct. 24, against Williamsburg and dropped the first two games.
Then began a dramatic comeback that culminated with a 3-2 win and a throng of students celebrating at center court.
Solon advanced at the end of a five-game rollercoaster, 19-25, 22-25, 25-12, 25-15, 15-6.
The win placed Solon in a regional semifinal Thursday against Knoxville at Williamsburg. The Lady Spartans quickly dispatched Knoxville, 25-8, 25-8, 25-14.

Benzing, Smith pace girls to fourth

FT. DODGE– On the State meet stage, you run your best and hope for the best.
