School board seeks public input on Outdoor Events Center

SOLON– The Solon Community School District has been planning, developing and implementing the Outdoor Events Center over the past few years. We were delighted to be able to hold our first athletic events there during the spring track season last year. However, the project is far from complete and the Board has now turned its attention to making it fully functional for the fall of 2012. The purpose of this message is to share with the community the options the Solon Board of Education (BOE) is considering to make the Outdoor Events Center (OEC) a functional facility.


New Adult Fiction

Readers who have begun the Jennifer Donnelly multi-generational series with the first book, “The Tea Rose,” will be happy to learn that the second book of the series has arrived. “The Winter Rose” picks up with turn-of-the-century London at the center of the story. You will be taken in with the historical drama and the novel’s heroine– her courage, a lost love and a tragic family. It’s entertaining to read and a brilliant story.

“Bridesmaids” (2011, R, Comedy)– This unexpected hit, of the summer movie season, is a wild and raunchy comedy about a lovelorn and broke woman (Kristin Wiig) who is picked as her best friend’s maid of honor, and has to bluff her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals with an oddball group of bridesmaids.
“Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop” (2011, R, Documentary) – Conan O’Brien’s comedy tour of the U.S. and Canada after leaving his post at “The Tonight Show” and severing his relationship with NBC.


New On The Non-Fiction Shelf

“Unmeasured Strength” by Lauren Manning tells the story of the decade-long recovery journey of a September 11 survivor who suffered burns on more than 80 percent of her body. She describes her experience during the attack and the ways she needed to change to renew her commitment to life and her loved ones. “The 50 Greatest Plays in Iowa Hawkeye Football History” by Michael Maxwell with Kirk Ferentz and Gary Dolphin offering forewords will provide hours of entertainment and bring to life the most memorable moments for Hawk fans.


Watch for new junior fiction books

There are several new book releases on the horizon that patrons are already requesting. Children Services Librarian Jen Leveck is taking names and making a list for these new books that are on order and will be shipped as soon as they are released. Any of these books will appeal to patrons from fourth grade through high school.


Third grade bingo

Third grade bingo is underway at the library. The library staff looks forward to greeting all the third graders and assisting them in learning to use the resources in the library. Students get a worksheet similar to a bingo card and are required to complete the task listed in each square. Many of the books the students need to use as research for the tasks are located on top the book shelves in the children’s non-fiction section of the library.


October storytime themes

Jungle Animals will be the theme for Storytime on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 10:30 a.m. The topic for Tuesday, Oct. 18, will be about Bears and on Oct. 25, it will be all about Halloween. Storytime is open to ages two to five-years old, their caregivers and siblings.


Silver Tsunami facing reduced state aging agencies

JOHNSON COUNTY- Facing continued increases in Iowa’s aging population, legislators earlier this year tasked the Iowa Department of Aging (IDA) with developing a plan to consolidate elder service providers that contract with the state.
The state law mandates the reduction of aging agencies in the state. Aging agencies were started as part of the federal Older Americans Act in 1965.
Currently, 13 Area Aging Agencies (AAAs) serve elder populations in Iowa. An IDA proposal shows six agencies standing by the legislative deadline July 1, 2012.

Our Lord’s Fall Festival Oct. 8

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church in Solon will host its seventh Annual Fall Festival Saturday, Oct. 8, from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. A soup luncheon will start at 10:30 a.m. serving chili, chicken noodle, taco and potato soup, along with hot dogs and chili dogs. The bake sale, including Kolaches, cookies, bars, some candy and other member specialties, starts at 8:30 a.m. Also available are crafts and a collection of new dolls (valued at $35 and up, they will make nice gifts for $10 each or two for $17).
