SOLON– Two talented artists, seven dedicated Friends and 18 beautiful images add up to one big vision for the Solon Public Library.
It’s a vision now permanent and abiding, and the Friends of the Solon Public Library are excited to share it with the entire community.
The Friends have sponsored the creation of a wall poster detailing 18 alluring images from library window displays arranged by Solon’s Antonia Russo. The poster’s photography and design work were donated
by nationally-renowned photographer and artist Bob Campagna, formerly of Mt. Vernon.

“I can’t imagine that any other library in the state, region or even the country has a rotation of display case shows like the one at Solon Public Library. And this one is UN-BE-LIEVABLE! The display pulls in a series of visual literary references and spectacularly realistic props. It is a must-see to appreciate.”

SOLON– The Solon Community School District Board of Education will host a public forum on the Solon Outdoor Event Center (OEC) during a special board meeting Thursday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m. at the Solon High School media center. The public is invited to attend and provide input to board members and school administration.


Meet the candidates

SOLON– There’s only one contested race in the Solon city election scheduled for Nov. 8.
Appointed incumbent Mark Krall and challenger Chuck Panzer are both seeking to fill an unexpired term on the Solon City Council. One of the two will finish out a two-year term replacing former council member Brad Randall.
There should be another seat to fill after the beginning of the year, because council member Cami Rasmussen is the only candidate to replace Rick Jedlicka as mayor.

Shall the City of Solon, in Johnson County, Iowa, enter into a loan agreement and borrow money in an amount not to exceed $1,350,000 for the purpose of paying the cost, to that extent, of acquiring, improving, furnishing and equipping land and facilities located at 100 South Cedar Street, commonly known as the Brosh Chapel and Community Center, for use as a City Hall and Community Center?

The city has been promoting its vision for a new city hall, and while there’s no formal opposition to the Nov. 8 bond issue, there have been some questions from the public.

SOLON– Are the residents of Solon ready to support the vision of the current city council?
We’ll find out Tuesday, Nov. 8, when voters will be asked to authorize the purchase of the Brosh Chapel and Community Center for use as a new city hall.
It’s the $1.35 million question of the year, and if recent city election turnouts are any indication, it will be decided by less than 200 people.

Hawk Talk

I thought last year’s 27-24 loss to Minnesota was the most depressing loss the Hawkeyes had in a long time… until last Saturday’s 22-21 loss at Gopherland.
I’ve always said that if Minnesota and Iowa State would play as hard against the rest of their schedule as they do against the Hawks, they would have a winning season and go to bowl games… not so fast, my friends.
I thought I was watching Bill Murray in “Groundhog Day” last Saturday.
In the film, Bill would wake up and have to go through the day the same as it was the day before.


Joyce Wingler

Joyce Wingler, 82, of Riverside, died Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, at Windmill Manor in Coralville. Funeral services for Joyce were held Oct. 25 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Riverside. Burial was in the Riverside Public Cemetery.
