CEDAR RAPIDS– All season long, the West High Women of Troy volleyball team had two phrases they lived by: Live Like Line and Remember Us. The first was a tribute to friend and teammate Caroline Found (nicknamed “Line”), who died in a moped accident in August. The second was a message to fans, friends and foes alike. It was not a question, it was a statement: “Remember us; we’re coming back to state.” Not only did the team overcome its grief to dominate the regular season as the top-ranked team in Class 4A, the Women of Troy made it to the state tournament for the fourth year in a row.


CCA to host financial aid night

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana High School will host financial aid night at the high school media center in Tiffin on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 6:30 p.m. A representative from Iowa Planning Access Network will explain how to prepare for college expenses, fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form and give tips on getting financial aid for college. Those who cannot attend may contact the high school guidance office for hand-out materials.


North Bend PTG hosts sale Nov. 19

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Bend Elementary Parent-Teacher Group (PTG) is hosting its Annual Elf Shop Vendor Fair and Bake Sale winter fundraiser Saturday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at North Bend Elementary School, 2230 St. Andrews Dr., North Liberty.

NORTH LIBERTY–Heritage Christian School (HCS) students may relish their turkey dinners in a whole new way as they sit down to this year’s Thanksgiving meal.
Middle school students, as part of an October nutrition unit, visited the Coralville Ecumenical Food Pantry, where they helped repackage food for distribution and learned to plan healthy meals from pantry offerings.

NORTH LIBERTY– “Stone Soup” is a tale meant to teach the value of cooperation amidst scarcity; hungry travelers come to a village and, starting with nothing but a rock and a pot of boiling water, gradually gain the trust and cooperation of the townsfolk, who each share small bits of food that collectively become a savory stew, enough to feed the entire village.

OXFORD– Denise Schares gets a lot of questions.
As the superintendent of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district, she is frequently approached by students, parents, faculty and staff. Of all the questions she addresses, however, one stands out as the most frequently asked.
“How do you decide to call a snow day?”
It’s not an easy decision, with potential ramifications either way, and regardless of the final call, somebody won’t be happy with it.


No change to North Liberty government

NORTH LIBERTY– City government remains status quo in North Liberty.
Reelected to the North Liberty City Council were Coleen Chipman, Terry Donahue and Chris Hoffman, the three incumbents who ran for three open seats.
Hoffman was the top vote getter, with 68 percent of total votes cast in the Nov. 8 election. Chipman was a close second, with 66 percent, and Donahue followed with 61 percent. Candidate Matt Zacek, the fourth person to put in a bid for one of the open positions, garnered 51 percent of all votes. There were 30 write-in votes.


Tiffin fire department gets rare controlled burn opportunity

TIFFIN– It was a windy Sunday morning when Tiffin volunteer firefighters struck the spark that set Terry Potter’s boyhood home aflame.
But weekend or not, calm or blustery, those are the conditions which firefighters must deal with in emergencies, and that’s why Tiffin Fire Department chief Brian Detert wanted to proceed with the controlled burn on Sunday, Nov. 6.
“This was the only day that fit into our schedule,” said Detert, “and it’s a good opportunity to practice exposure protection in the wind.”


Berner upends Phillips in Tiffin

TIFFIN— The 2011 Tiffin city council election brought out 324 people, or 26.78 percent, of the 1,210 eligible voters. However, those who did vote handed Steve Berner a decisive win over incumbent Royce W. Phillips in the mayoral race. Berner received 195 votes (61 percent) to Phillips’ 127 (39 percent). Phillips has been Mayor of Tiffin since January 2008.
