Medals for their mettle

NORTH LIBERTY– Volunteer firefighters with the North Liberty Fire Department combined training with fun on Sunday, Oct. 23, during the department’s second annual Medal Day. Ten firefighters split into two teams to compete in timed events simulating common but critical fire ground skills.
North Liberty’s bravest put on Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), took on an engine company drill, a truck company drill and practiced setting up the department’s 75-foot aerial ladder. Teams that performed the tasks in the least amount of time received medals and bragging rights.


Trojans’ final game goes to the ‘dogs

IOWA CITY– With apologies to Frank Sinatra, that’s life. You’re riding high on Monday only to be shot down on Friday.
The West High Trojan football season came to a crashing end Friday night, Nov. 4, at the hands of the Bettendorf Bulldogs in a Class 4A quarterfinal. A win would have sent Coach Brian Sauser’s crew to the UNI-Dome.


West volleyball: remember us?

CEDAR RAPIDS– “It’s been a topsy-turvy journey, but I’m pretty proud of them,” West High coach Kathy Bresnahan said last Wednesday (Nov. 2) night after her Women of Troy defeated Cedar Rapids Washington 3-0 in a Class 4A Regional final.
The win punched the ladies’ tickets to the State Volleyball Tournament, which begins today (Wednesday) at noon in the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena as West takes on Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.

NORTH LIBERTY– Kids, staff and parents at several Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) schools ran for their lives on Oct. 7.
They walked, jogged, and skipped, too.


Child’s play now more accessible at Garner

NORTH LIBERTY– The schoolyard is a more exciting place at Garner Elementary these days.
Volunteers at the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) school in North Liberty, which opened in the fall of 2010, recently installed a second playground on the west side of the building. The new structure, while suitable for children ages 5-12, will be used primarily by Garner’s third through sixth grade students. The building, with a capacity for 450 students, needed to expand its outdoor play areas, said Playground Committee Co-Chair Katie Voss.

First United Methodist Church sponsoring blood drive Nov. 19

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty First United Methodist Church is sponsoring a blood drive on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. In order to donate, you must be at least 17 years old (16 if you have a parent’s permission signed). Must bring a picture ID, be of good health at the time of donation, and have a good breakfast the day of donation. Veterans Day Dinner to include presentation from local veteran

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty American Legion Auxiliary’s annual Veterans Day dinner has been moved to Tuesday, Nov. 15, at South Slope’s community room.
The change has been made due to a USO show planned at Riverside Casino on Nov. 11.


AlphaGraphics expands, relocates to larger facility

NORTH LIBERTY– AlphaGraphics of North Liberty announced that it is has moved to accommodate growth. Operations from the Iowa City facility at 505 Southgate Ave. and the North Liberty facility have consolidated operations at 720 Pacha Parkway #4. This new 3,800 square foot space is just two doors down in the same building of the previous location.
An open house is planned for Thursday Nov. 10, from 2- 6 p.m. with a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m.


Seeking shelter

JOHNSON COUNTY– If the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center is going to continue to be a resource for the entire county, officials say it’s time for every participant to pony up.
Earlier this month, the City of Iowa City sent a letter to 12 entities in Johnson County that have used the shelter’s services for dealing with stray animals. It originated from the office of Iowa City Chief of Police Samuel Hargadine, because the animal shelter falls under the Iowa City Police Department for budgeting purposes.
