Making aging easier

IOWA CITY– Livable Communities for Successful Aging, the Johnson County initiative that’s at the forefront of advancing issues on successful aging, held a Fall Celebration on Sept. 23 in Iowa City.
From 2000 to 2030, the county is expected to more than double the number of citizens over age 55, so it’s good news that Livable Communities is leading the charge to organize and develop welcoming programs for seniors.


Seeking shelter

JOHNSON COUNTY– If the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center is going to continue to be a resource for the entire county, officials say it’s time for every participant to pony up.
Earlier this month, the City of Iowa City sent a letter to 12 entities in Johnson County that have used the shelter’s services for dealing with stray animals. It originated from the office of Iowa City Chief of Police Samuel Hargadine, because the animal shelter falls under the Iowa City Police Department for budgeting purposes.


Progress measurement a catch-22

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district has released its Annual Progress Report (APR) for the 2010-2011 academic year. Superintendent Dr. Denise Schares presented the report, which is made available to the public, at the Oct. 19 school board work session and regular meeting in the Clear Creek Elementary library in Oxford.


Citizen legislator

SOLON– Earlier this year, legislative districts across Iowa were redrawn with many legislators finding themselves representing new territory and new constituents.
Jeff Kaufmann was one legislator so affected.
Kaufmann, a Republican from Wilton, represents the 73rd District, which now includes Solon and Lake Macbride.


Gazebo on the Green given 12-month extension

NEWPORT ROAD- Gazebo on the Green, the garden tour and wedding spot that has been in a holding pattern for months, has been granted a 12-month extension to host weddings.
Owner Mary Ellen Hill said she typically hosts 10 weddings on her 33 acres with over a dozen different gardens, woods and prairies that attract tourists and bridal parties who walk through the fields, shade and flower gardens each season. Her garden is also used for afternoon teas, baby and bridal showers.

WASHINGTON– They made it.
The Solon Lady Spartans made it past the regional final and into the state volleyball tournament for the first time.
The Lady Spartans surged past Fairfield in three games last Wednesday (Nov. 2) at Washington to capture the Class 3A Region 7 final, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19.
Solon’s girls now have an opportunity to avenge the football team, knocked out of the 3A playoffs by Union of LaPorte City last Monday.
The No. 2 Lady Spartans will face No. 9 Union in opening round quarterfinal action Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. on court two at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Non-public transportation reimbursement

This is a reminder to families who qualify for non-public transportation reimbursement that forms must be filed in the central office no later than Dec. 1, for first semester reimbursement and May 1, 2012, for second semester reimbursement. Forms are available at the Iowa Department of Education website: http://educateiowa.gov/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1257&It... They may also be picked up in the district central office. Failure to submit request by the above deadlines each semester will result in the denial of the reimbursement request for the claim period.


Younkers Community Day booklets

The Spanish Club is selling Younkers Community Day booklets to help fund the Panama trip. The cost of a booklet is $5. It includes a $10 off coupon, a 20 percent off shopping pass and a 30 percent off early bird coupon. Customers can select merchandise beginning Sunday, Nov. 6, (with community days being Nov. 11 and 12). No waiting in lines. All booklet sales benefit the Panama student travelers. High school art show

Solon High School art students will be displaying their work in an upcoming exhibition to be held Nov. 10-13, at Solon Middle School. There will be a selection of two-dimensional work in both traditional and digital media as well as an arrangement of ceramics. Artwork will be located in the lobby outside of the auditorium for viewing before and after performances of this year’s high school musical, “My Fair Lady.”
