Coed volleyball signup underway

SOLON– Solon Co-ed Volleyball starts Wednesday, Nov. 30, at the Solon Middle School gym for “A” and “B” Leagues. First games start at 6:30 p.m.
To register your team or find a team call: “A” League - Kalms at 624-2238, “B” League – B. Young at 530-3187.
League registration is due by Nov. 21.


Brett Smith benefit Nov. 16 at Savvy

SOLON– Michelle Hand and Kelly Winegar are hosting a fundraising event for Brett Smith and his family. Please join them between 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Savvy Coffee & Wine Bar for a Silpada jewelry party. All proceeds from the event will go to Brett and his family for Christmas shopping.


KC breakfast Nov. 13 at St. Mary

SOLON– The Solon Knights of Columbus will be hosting a breakfast Sunday, Nov. 13, from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon. Ages 12 and up, $6; ages 5-12, $3; under age five eat free.


Funk to discuss Afghanistan experience at Nov. 10 meeting

SOLON– In celebration of Veterans Day, Dr. Gerry Funk will share his experiences in Afghanistan with the GFWC/Iowa Solon Women’s Club and members of the community at the Solon Public Library on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m.
Dr. Funk took leave for a year from his position as professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Iowa to serve in the United States Army Reserve Medical Corps in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Lakeview Elementary grows into its new space

SOLON– Lakeview Elementary Principal Jodi Rickels is on a first-name basis with her construction team.
During a recent tour of the school’s expansion and renovation, she called out, “Hey Mike!” or “Hi Kevin!” in the hallways in the same voice she used when greeting a second-grader by name in the media center.
She’s getting pretty used to the workers, dust, the noise and punch lists, but looks forward to the day when all the changes will make her building into a school again.


Fisher to plan SCSD’s “big picture”

SOLON– Exploration, collaboration and cohesion are formative goals for the Solon Community School District as it begins to develop a strategic plan for improving student achievement and school leadership.
The plan, administered by Clear Lake education consultant Dr. Troyce Fisher, will likely be “less deviation from current practice than it will be an enhancement of it,” she said.
In October, the Solon school board voted to pay Fisher up to $10,293 for her facilitation of a strategic plan, the first of its kind for the district.


Arch caps off veterans memorial

SOLON– Phil Michel thinks it speaks volumes about how the community of Solon honors its veterans.
Michel and his crew assembled at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Solon Veterans Memorial to lower a 10,000-pound granite arch by crane onto two pedestals, essentially completing a project started three years ago.


Legion Veterans Day Memorial Soup Supper Nov. 11

SOLON– The Solon Veterans Memorial Committee will be hosting a Veterans Day Soup Supper Friday, Nov. 11, from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Legion. The menu will include all-you-can-eat chili, chicken noodle soup, crackers, bread, butter, dessert, lemonade and coffee. Adults, $6, children, $4. All veterans eat free courtesy of the American Legion Riders. Proceeds go toward the Veterans Memorial.


Veterans Day Program Nov. 11 at middle school

SOLON– The annual Veterans Day Program will be held at the Solon Middle School Auditorium on Friday, Nov. 11, starting at 1 p.m. All veterans and their families and friends are invited. Community members are also welcome. The program will include several speakers and the eighth grade band. Refreshments will be served. Please join the community in recognizing veterans on this important holiday.
