SOLON– The chocolate leaves are falling from the lollipop tree. An icing wind blows down from the Gum Drop Mountains and covers the roof of the gingerbread house with pink frosting. In the Molasses Swamp, the pecan turtles and jelly sugar fish hide behind tall stalks of caramel slow pokes. The gingerbread children are at the crooked old peanut brittle house, and the game begins.


Booster clothing sale

The Solon Athletic Booster Club will hold its clothing open house Wednesday, Dec. 7, from 4 until 7 p.m. in the Solon High School commons.


Iowa House District 73

WEST BRANCH– David Johnson knows about small town Iowa and small town government. After four years on the West Branch City Council, he also understands that a lot of the issues facing Iowa’s small towns and their governing bodies need to be addressed at the state level.
To that end, Johnson has announced his bid to run for the Iowa State House in 2012.

Facilities usage meeting Dec. 7

SOLON– There will be a facilities usage meeting at Solon Middle School on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 6 p.m. Gym usage at Lakeview and the middle school for January through April will be discussed.


Auxiliary planning Boys’ State plaque

SOLON– The Solon American Legion Auxiliary is planning a plaque to honor the Solon students that attended the American Legion Boys State program. Free Christmas meal at Our Lord’s Church

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will be serving a free Christmas meal Sunday, Dec. 25. All are welcome. Reservations are not required but would be helpful. The meal will be served at noon at the church, 131 N. Market St., Solon. Rides and deliveries are also available. Call Duane and Anna at 319-841-2243 with questions or a reservation.


120th Street project will start next spring

SHUEYVILLE– Commuters and residents will have to wait a few months more for the reconstruction of 120th St. from this northwest Johnson County community west toward I-380.
Plans for the project have been reviewed, according to Mayor Bryan Bredman, and are currently being finalized.
“All necessary permits have been acquired and we anticipate a January-February time frame for bid letting, with construction then beginning in the spring of 2012,” Bredman said.

While the Hawkeye football team gets ready to go bowling for the second year in a row at the Insight Bowl (this year they take on Oklahoma and former Hawkeye Bobby Stoops) the basketball and wrestling teams have started their seasons.

Women’s Basketball
I’ll start with the Iowa women who have a couple of impressive wins beating UNI in Cedar Falls and Virginia Tech in Carver Hawkeye Arena.
The freshmen have made a big impact, with Samantha Logic leading the way.
Samantha has started every game and is playing more like a two-year starter.
