Don’t be bored at home over break

Stop in at the library and check out books, DVDs and puzzles to keep the kids and yourself entertained over the school break. Regular hours are noon until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. See below for special holiday hours. If you’re going to be heading out on a road trip to relatives, stop in and check out an audio book for the trip.


Free Christmas Meal

Our Lord’s Church will be serving a free Christmas meal Sunday, Dec. 25. All are welcome. Reservations are not required but would be helpful. The meal will be served at noon at the church, 131 N. Market St., Solon. Rides and deliveries are also available. Call Duane and Anna at 319-841-2243 with questions or a reservation.


Holiday deadline

Due to the Christmas holiday, the, we will have an abbreviated work schedule for the Dec. 28 edition of the Economist. Submissions for the Dec. 28 edition should be made by Thursday, Dec. 22. Our office will be closed for business Monday, Dec. 26. Call 624-2233 with any questions.


Students to provide social media instruction Dec. 22

SOLON– On Thursday, Dec. 22, at 7 p.m., area students will be at the Solon Public Library to instruct interested persons on how to use Skype, set up a Facebook account or a Gmail account.
This project is part of Do Something.org’s national project, “Grandparents Gone Wired.” Emily, Kyle and Andrew Bransky have started a local club, Solon Youth for Community, that is part of Do.Something.org. This is a club for youth to participate in local and national volunteer activities. For more information or to join, email Emily.Bransky@yahoo.com


School board approves bids for OEC synthetic turf, landscaping

SOLON– MBA, Inc. from North Liberty will do the grading and landscaping for Solon’s new Outdoor Events Center. The North Liberty company has created field hockey and soccer fields for the University of Iowa, was the general contractor for a soccer field at Indian Hills Community College and renovated the IC Kickers soccer fields for the City of Iowa City.
Closer to home, Solon’s WaMaC rival, Clear Creek Amana, had its football stadium laser-graded by MBA.

Hawkeye women lose
The three-point line came into play in the 1980s and it has made the game a lot more exciting with more scoring.
The Bradley Braves took 3-point shooting to a new level last Saturday knocking down 13-22 threes and beating the Hawkeyes, 96-88.
That’s 59 percent shooting! Teams will go a whole season and not shot 59% from the floor let alone from three-point range.
Kelsey Budd led the way going 12-14 from the floor, including 5-6 from three-point land.
Kelsey’s previous career high was 12 points… wow!


Mary Frances Kempf

Mary Frances Kempf, 91, died Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, at Atrium Village in Hills following a lengthy illness. Funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 16 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, with Father Michael Phillips officiating. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Mary Frances was born Nov. 20, 1920, in rural Crawfordsville, the daughter of Claude and Cora Ruebsam McCoy. She served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Mary was united in marriage to Lester Kempf on Nov. 13, 1952, at St. James Church in Washington.
Local survivors include a son, Robert (Joan) Kempf of Solon.


Larry Cook

Larry Cook, 72, of Rockford, Ill., formerly of Manchester, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, at home with his family and partner by his side. Cremation services were held Dec. 14 at Christ Church Unity.
Larry was born May 9, 1939, in Delaware County, the son of Forrest and Irene (Rossow) Cook. He graduated from Manchester High School in 1956. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1957 and was honorably discharged in 1966.
