West girls tennis to State

IOWA CITY — The 2011 Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) Singles and Doubles Regional Tennis Tournament was held at the Hawkeye Tennis Complex on Thursday, May 19. Class 1A and 2A competition was held with the champion and runner-up advancing to the State Tournament, which will be held Thursday and Friday, June 2 and 3. The State Tournament will also be at the Hawkeye Tennis Complex.
In singles action West High’s Addy Riley won the championship with teammate Olivia Lofgren the runner-up.


Nine seniors lead the way for 2011 West baseball

IOWA CITY — Coach Charlie Stumpff’s West High Trojans have been the State Class 4A Runner-Up team for two years in a row. With nine seniors on the 2011 squad, the smart money would look for West to be back in Des Moines again this year.
The Trojans lost Sean Moore, Neil Madsen, Colton Rogers, David Rachke, Neil Flynn, Ryan Raaf, Chris Lauer and Tom Heinrich to graduation, but a core of veteran starters remains.


West girls are diamond ready

IOWA CITY — The West High Women of Troy are set to defend their 2010 MVC Conference Championship on the varsity softball diamond. The ladies posted a 32-10 record overall and 24-2 in the MVC last year. Coach Jeff Kelley looks for even better results this year.
“Because we were so young last year, I look for improvement from all of our returning starters offensively and defensively.”


CCA boys 4x400 squad wins at State Track meet in Des Moines

DES MOINES — Dillon Villhauer, Caleb Sedlacek, Zach Manders and Jared Ganschow took their successful 4x400-meter relay on the road to the 2011 State Co-Ed Track and Field Meet, and came home as state champions. The foursome ran the event in 3:21.77.
Jared Ganschow brought home a pair of second place medals for his 48.60 seconds finish in the 400-meter dash, and his 22.43 seconds effort in the 200-meter dash. Ganschow also finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.52 seconds.
Zach Manders was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.20 seconds.


CCA, West boys soccer earn State appearance

JOHNSON COUNTY– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys’ soccer team battled in the rain last Saturday (May 28) for the right to make their first State Tournament appearance. The Clippers shut-out Keokuk 3-0 at home. The win earned CCA an appearance Thursday, June 2 in the state playoffs against Cedar Rapids Xavier at the Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines. A win would move CCA to the semifinal round on Friday, with the Class 2A championship scheduled for Saturday. Match times are 2:30 p.m.


Clipper softball off to a 2-0 start

OXFORD — The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity softball team started their 2011 campaign with a pair of wins last week, dispatching Mid-Prairie 12-4 Wednesday in Wellman, and pounding Maquoketa 8-1 at home on Thursday evening.

TIFFIN — After suffering a 9-1 loss in his Clear Creek Amana (CCA) debut, new coach Andrew Davis was accentuating the positive.
“I got to see some good things out there tonight, I saw some things I’m pleased with,” Davis said.
The Regals of Iowa City Regina proved troublesome from the start, loading up the bases in the top of the first inning. While one runner scored, two more were gunned down in a Clipper double play; the surviving runner was brought in on an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.


Benewich retires from Van Allen

NORTH LIBERTY– Debbie Benewich will be missed.
The long-time teacher is leaving Van Allen Elementary School in North Liberty this week, retiring after 32 years in the field of education.
Benewich was honored as an Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) DPO Scholarship nominee by her teaching teammates at Van Allen in March. The DPO (Districtwide Parents’ Organization) sponsors the program as one way to recognize excellence in the educational system.


NLFD hosts open house June 10

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty volunteer fire department will host an open house at the North Liberty Fire Station directly following the Fun Days parade on Friday, June 10. The firefighters will give tours of their updated facilities, with fire trucks on display, and a bouncing house for the kids. Everyone is welcome.


Midwest One Bank sponsors microchip event for dogs June 4

NORTH LIBERTY–MidWestOne Bank and Friends of the Animal Center Foundation are sponsoring a microchip event for dog owners on Saturday, June 4, (rain or shine) from 9 a.m.–12 p.m. at MidWestOne Bank on Highway 965 in North Liberty. Cost is $5 per dog (cash or checks only). The event is first-come, first-served and open to the public (no early birds please).
